Sure. How about John Simpson from the Skyliners and Pat McCue from the
Marksmen and later the Skyliners.

And what about the guy who did the solo in "Up Cherry Street" the Kingsmen's
exit number in '67 I believe,.....Mac something????
I was at a BS practice in the winter between 69 and 70, and they had gathered
an all-star trio of sop solists, with their own Bill Pusey (ahhhh, "Free
Again"), Salort (that great intro to St Lucy's 69 opener!), and the guy from
Boston ("Conquest" triple tongue solo!). What a great group of players! I
don't think they made it together to the field in 70 as a group, though, but
I'm not sure.

The greatest! Of course, he arranges for our band, so I have to say that. :-)
He can still play, too. He wowed our kids when he came to one of our practices
before USSBA champs last fall with his Maynard "McArthur Park" (goofing
around after practice, opf course).

Yeah, Rocco's (no relation to the chickenshit scumbag) was a fine Corps and
one of the best "feeder" Corps the Skyliners hornline had. A LOT of great
players came out of that Corps (that's spelled C-O-R-P-S Reggie). Hickey,
Pee-Wee, to name just a couple. God I can't remember how many really
talented people were in that Corps.

John "suitcase" Simpson! Without a doubt the greatest ever to put his lips
to a bugle. His playing of Gershwin's "Rapsody In Blue" on a G-D baritone is
something not even those greats of today could ever image doing on a 3 valve

Way to go, Charlie! You have a collection of old recordings that rivals
Fleetwood. I know you'll do your best to accommodate m. He's a good man.
You certainly did me a big favor when you put together a collection of AF
Academy performances under the direction of SSgt. Keith Markey. I owe you
a big one.

Doesn't the story have something to do with the broken star he wore around his
neck?
Heh...
>Doesn't the story have something to do with the broken star he wore around
>his neck?
As told to me by Pepe himself, during one of our many journey when we marched
together:
It was 1963 - Miami - and I was undefeated as a sop in individuals ... so, when
we went to Mats in Miami, I wore this "star" made of tin foil around my neck
... and I was pompous and arrogant where ever I went ... then came the contest
and Rigge Laus from the Rockets beat me ... at the next rehearsal, one of the
star's point was broken off and I had to wear it with a certain degree of
humility ...
Pepe and I laughed over many things through the years ... he was always center
stage - even at the cost of being the goat sometimes ... he is truly missed ...
He was good when i was in Archie 81 - 83!
He won the VFW individual baritone or bass bugle title 6 years in a row,
1961-66.
And he was never a featured soloist in the field show.
Martin wound up with the New York Sklyliners for a year or two (along with
John "suitcase" Simpson) and Eyler and Fite wound up with Archie for a
couple of years.

Here's another piece of info for everyone. Gus Wilke who will admit that he
couldn't triple tongue (ta-ta-ka-ta) or double (ta-ka) tongue (which is
actually faster then a triple when done correctly) worth a lick, was the one
who taught the entire soprano line (leads, firsts and seconds) when he was
with St. Andrew's Bridgemen how to do those double and triple tonguing
sequences they used during their contests back in the late 70's. You wanna
hear THOSE kids. The audience used to gasp, as well as cheer, when they
heard them perform. Simply amazing. But alas, St. Andrew's can't be
considered among the great soloists of the 60's. They didn't perform those
tricks until the 70's and 80's.

ANDY:
Absolutely! ,,,Timmy Rennie is often forgotten.... he, like Da Fig, is
another student of the less well-known, but nevertheless excellent, Sal(Sonny)
Calvagna......Sonny played with Carman Cluna, Pepe, and Joe Gennero in the
great Brooklyn corps of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel ...he later played in Loretto,
and then went on to be their Director, and did likewise in St. Rita's.....
http://www.stritasbrassmen.org/home.html
.....along the way, he played in Sky..... as for Timmy, it was he and DaFig who
played the solos with all the solos with Loretto ....I, being talentless, was
