I was at a BS practice in the winter between 69 and 70, and they had gathered
an all-star trio of sop solists, with their own Bill Pusey (ahhhh, "Free
Again"), Salort (that great intro to St Lucy's 69 opener!), and the guy from
Boston ("Conquest" triple tongue solo!). What a great group of players! I
don't think they made it together to the field in 70 as a group, though, but
I'm not sure.

The greatest! Of course, he arranges for our band, so I have to say that. :-)

He can still play, too. He wowed our kids when he came to one of our practices
before USSBA champs last fall with his Maynard "McArthur Park" (goofing
around after practice, opf course).

Thanks for the updates. I'm glad someone is reading the posts. I knew Charlie
Bruin from St Pats and their quartet. He was a fine hornplayer and competed
successfully in individuals. Joh Simpson was/is THE greatest bari who ever
worked a spit valve. I saw him at the Cabs Individual show in 1963. He got a
99.00. He was soloist for the USAF DC corps and can be heard on the double
side Fleetwood USAF disc 1962. I enjoy your replies. Is Frank Bashemi the
"Mardi Gras" soloist. Stay in touch.

Gee Reginald (what a name for a guy from Brooklyn no less, especially if
you're from Red Hook,...excuse me,...Carroll Gardens) but if you went so far
out of your way to research this post why didn't you go down a few posts
further and see my reply. You're behaving like our dear Catherine. That post
is how old? 5 and 1/2 years?

Yeah, Rocco's (no relation to the chickenshit scumbag) was a fine Corps and
one of the best "feeder" Corps the Skyliners hornline had. A LOT of great
players came out of that Corps (that's spelled C-O-R-P-S Reggie). Hickey,
Pee-Wee, to name just a couple. God I can't remember how many really
talented people were in that Corps.

14 National Individual soprano solo Champion in a 9 year span. Simply
amazing. Funny, Pepe, Tommy Martin, Swan, every time they entered an
individual contest one of them was sure to win. All those individual
contests at Archie's post "back in the day". Martin would see Riggie walk in
the hall and all he could say was ""Awh shit". :-) Funny, just a couple of
years ago Tommy Martin's protégé and Riggie's protégé were soprano soloists
together with the Caballeros. Frank Ponzo and Curt Hawkins. And Frank not
too long ago admitted that he learned a lot from Curt in the short time that
they were together.

John "suitcase" Simpson! Without a doubt the greatest ever to put his lips
to a bugle. His playing of Gershwin's "Rapsody In Blue" on a G-D baritone is
something not even those greats of today could ever image doing on a 3 valve

Way to go, Charlie! You have a collection of old recordings that rivals
Fleetwood. I know you'll do your best to accommodate m. He's a good man.

You certainly did me a big favor when you put together a collection of AF
Academy performances under the direction of SSgt. Keith Markey. I owe you
a big one.

Doesn't the story have something to do with the broken star he wore around his

As told to me by Pepe himself, during one of our many journey when we marched
together:

It was 1963 - Miami - and I was undefeated as a sop in individuals ... so, when
we went to Mats in Miami, I wore this "star" made of tin foil around my neck
... and I was pompous and arrogant where ever I went ... then came the contest
and Rigge Laus from the Rockets beat me ... at the next rehearsal, one of the
star's point was broken off and I had to wear it with a certain degree of
humility ...

Pepe and I laughed over many things through the years ... he was always center
stage - even at the cost of being the goat sometimes ... he is truly missed ...

Bryan [Iddy Bit] Aller marched a full 13 seasons with the Kilties.

He won the VFW individual baritone or bass bugle title 6 years in a row,
1961-66.

And he was never a featured soloist in the field show.

How's this for a trio, Ray Eyler, Tommy Martin and Dave Fite as the triple
tonguing trio for the Air Force Drum and Bugle Corps with Tru Crawford as
their arranger?

Martin wound up with the New York Sklyliners for a year or two (along with
John "suitcase" Simpson) and Eyler and Fite wound up with Archie for a
couple of years.

Tommy Martin was my first DC Horn instructor, and since I was 12 when I
first was in front of him at a LI Grenadiers practice, he will always be
"Mr. Martin" to me. If I knew him then like I know him now, I wouldn't
have been so scared of him!! For some reason he wasn't to fond of any 3rd
sops then (where all the young'uns were) and I remember more than a few
music stands flying at us over 2 years...which is why I have to thank him -
he's the reason I switched to Mello in the first place - he loooved the
mid-range! :) Actually, come to think of it, he's still the same (minus the
music stand launches...he's mellowed a bit!!) :)))

I had to chime in here because I was sitting at the bar at the Firehouse on
Saturday night until 1:30am at the Golden Eagles Christmas party listening
to Tommy & John Otto telling hilarious stories about the good ol' days..I
say 1:30am because that's when I left - They were still going strong!!
Tommy is most definitely one of the greats....

Dick Burns of Blessed Sacrament and Ballantine Brewers. Top 4

DaFig was an EGSELEN ;-) double and triple tonguer (God, I'll bet there are
some women on here right now who have ABSOLUTELY NO idea what we are talking
about but are just loving every word of it and letting their imaginations
run wild.:-) In 1966 it was Joe DaFig, Johnny Guarino and Manny Salort who
performed the triple tonguing trio in "Here Comes Charlie Welch", the OTL
that year. Salort was an EGSELEN triple tonguer himself. He could/would
triple tongue "The Flight of the Bumble Bee" as a warm-up.

Here's another piece of info for everyone. Gus Wilke who will admit that he
couldn't triple tongue (ta-ta-ka-ta) or double (ta-ka) tongue (which is
actually faster then a triple when done correctly) worth a lick, was the one
who taught the entire soprano line (leads, firsts and seconds) when he was
with St. Andrew's Bridgemen how to do those double and triple tonguing
sequences they used during their contests back in the late 70's. You wanna
hear THOSE kids. The audience used to gasp, as well as cheer, when they
heard them perform. Simply amazing. But alas, St. Andrew's can't be
considered among the great soloists of the 60's. They didn't perform those
tricks until the 70's and 80's.

Mario ... wasn't there another guy out of Loretto? ... Timmy Renny (sp)? ... he
went onto Sky with De Fig and t-tounged in the Miserlou trio/quartet or
whatever in 63-64 ...

ANDY asks:

ANDY:
Absolutely! ,,,Timmy Rennie is often forgotten.... he, like Da Fig, is
another student of the less well-known, but nevertheless excellent, Sal(Sonny)
Calvagna......Sonny played with Carman Cluna, Pepe, and Joe Gennero in the
great Brooklyn corps of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel ...he later played in Loretto,
and then went on to be their Director, and did likewise in St. Rita's.....
http://www.stritasbrassmen.org/home.html
.....along the way, he played in Sky..... as for Timmy, it was he and DaFig who
played the solos with all the solos with Loretto ....I, being talentless, was
allowed to, literally, play one note in our concert piece, "Night and Day" -
and I was grateful for that..... Remember, we're talking about GREATEST
soloists!.... btw Aren't you sorry that you asked? Still wishig that Santa will
make me one of THEM!...
