9. 1992 To tame the perilous skies!! You want GE?? You want Drill ?? This show
has it!! Hosinger and the Cadets fit like a glove..and 1993 was a testament as
to what they do best....deadly competitiors in the last week of the year!!
Colorguard wise, this is probably the best unit that not only they have ever
had.but one of the best of all time. Innovative, technically perfect, full of
impact, excellent silks and uniform, and the ability to spin like never
before(except them in 1991!)
8. 1994 West side story! Whew, any other year, this show just got better as the
season went on..full of vintage Cadets trademarks..great drum line, and a strong
"modern" colorguard. WSS was new and excitig, thanks to the new way of selling
it! The drill was as much a part of the story as the story itself! and who
could forget the "Sculpting?? (thank you M Cesario!)
7. 1997 Fillipe Spark! The top 3 in 1997 was probably one of the strongest in
a long time the three"big boys" were healthy and shooting it out all year.
Cadets were nothing short of a legitimate contender in 97...Again,taking a
composers work and making it their own. Opening statement gave chills as the
guard accented the fast music perfectly. Cadets secret is just that, blend the
music with the visual to creat one element! Masters at their game...Brass and
percussion that year were full of impact and gave us one of the most ear
appealing shows in a while!
6. 1991 A.B.C.'s of Modern Music. As stated earlier,Cadets love to push the
envelope, well some might have thought they pushed it right off the table in 91~
The minimalist approach to this show was to the extreme! OTL of Addams "Short
ride..." was something that some had to hear more than once..and if you gave it
the chance?? HOT!!!! Perfect melding of sight and sound..a little too esoteric
for some...Guard,always the "innovators" using "S" style sticks in the
opener.and then out of nowhere,it was over.Perfect formation hitting you out of
nowhere.
Letter from home, emtional, great vusial patterns, and a story from the
guard..Picnic anyone? the last number is what really sells this show. Three
distinct pieces of music(hmmmm, sounds like this year) Prelude,Fugues, and Riffs
was HOT! opening it up a little and parking and blowing like nobodys
business,,,Colorguard earned their title that year in every way, last minute of
the show was beyond hot!!
It cooked! Excellent job!
5. 1989 Les' Miserables Never in my opinion has a corps projected such emotion
simply with just their music. The score of Lez miz. was arranged perfect for
Cadets of Bergen County in 89. Starting their show before they were
"invited"(this worked so well! what an impact) the corps just played, and
marched, and sold, and made this production their own. Again, high guard, and
rightfully so..this was probably the birth of the Cadets guard of today...And
who can forget the horn wedge with their "free form" movement.
4. 1993 In the spring.....GE perfection is one way to describe this show.
Strong in every area is another..Classic drum corps, seamless and perfect is yet
another !! Again,an award winning colorgaurd,wearing medieval Uniforms(one of
the best uniforms ever) and spinning themselves into a frenzy, telling a story
and creating a mood. If it not for the great efforts of Star of Indiana, this
corps would have owned every show they were in. If you need to give someone a
lesson in drum corps 101...use this show. Solid execution. Near perfect drill
forms and transition. Brass and percussion ....wow! still holds it's own to
this day !
3. 1982. You just knew after the 81 season that something was stirring in New
Jersey. After years of up and down, the Garfield Cadets were making steady
climbs..and something was going to bust loose. 82 was the year! Taking all the
elements of entertainment and giving them a new definition,Garfield motored
their way into 3rd place, beating everyone out that year except for one! Chants
of East,East,East..were heard throughout the stadiumon Montreal that night, and
if any corps had the chance to deliver..this corps did. Solid Brass, innovative
drill and a colorguard that just oozed class, and capability..this corps set the
stage for things to come...placing 5th in prelims,3rd in finals..the time may
have finally arrived.......
2. 1984 West Side Story. Again,taking a theme,and expanding it into something
new. Drum corps?? no,this was somethig else..this was yet to be
named....expanding on the style of 1983, Garfield took GE toa new level and set
the precedent for years to come. Music style no one have ever thought of..Drill
style even more appealing then they created last year. total blending int a
unit..they werent horns, drums, gaurd and marching, they were one unit working as
a whole. one of the best designed shows of all time. It just kept coming at you
full of surprises...
1. 1998 Stonehenge. It was tough to beat out 1984,but then again,1998 was an
updated, nodern version of 1984 in my opinion. GE packed, strong in all areas, in
your face Drum corps!! Visually a vintage Cadets drill,Guard wise again Vintage
Cadets solid and full of color...selling this show like no other they had in
the past...Brass was full and rich, and challenging..delivering the musical
goods.
this was more of an event than a show, always something going on,and climax
after climax....truly a classic.
Honorable Mention.....1983. It's hard to describe this show. drum corps died
that August night in Miami...replaced by modern marching music.Owned by the
Garfield Cadets and the new world order, ahead of the pack, and forcing everyone
else to follow. Sure, all the elements of Drum corps were there, sure they
Marched, and played by the rules(at the time) but this offering of Garfield was
something different..destiny..evolution..Drum corps would never be the same
again
and everyone was forced to follow and change and jump aboard...kicking and
screaming,,forced to accept and praise this new Eastern Superpower! They gave
us new ideas in the area of ensemble, total
package...visual...colorgaurd...they threw down the gauntlet....
Well, there you go, I would love the hear some other opinions
Geoffrey
My personal favorite show was 1992. I saw that show early in the season and
scratched my head a bit. By championships, that show had evolved into a
beautiful story. The flying motifs and subtle sky-like images were amazing.
Plus the colorguard outfits, jackets especially, were too cool. April outdid
her self that year...the guard was smokin'.
I am surprised that you left 1987 off the list. That "break-away" company
front gets me every time. Appalachian Spring will always be a drum corps
classic!
Anyway, thanks for bringing lots of memories back to my mind. We'll see if
the Cadets can set a new precedent for many more years to come. Or maybe,
there's another corps in the wing, waiting for their turn...

9. 1997 - The Music of Phillip Sparke - Quite possibly the most difficult show
ever put out onto the field. Jazz running, while playing more notes than you
could count and spinning like nobody's business...doesn't necessarily sound
appealing, but they made it appealing.
8. 1999 - The Big Apple - I think I am one of the few people that totally loved
this show. I thought all of the gimmicks added so much to the show...the
tarps, the taxi cabs, the Statue of Liberty flags...all of them. The ballad!!
Another HUGE goosebump moment for me. Fabulous guard.
7. 1988 - Copland's Third Symphony - Their last show as Garfield! Totally
underrated show. Love the silks in the first big hit in the opener. Powerful
last minute.
6. 1984 - Quite possibly the largest ovation ever during a show at the company
front in the closer...sheer power...what a GE packed show!
5. 1987 - Appalachian Spring - Amazing show. The last minute is pure, sheer
vintage drum corps. What a way to end the show.
4. 1996 - The American West - Promise of Living is one of the most powerful
pieces I've ever heard anyone play...GOOSEBUMP CITY...The Guard was fabulous,
spinning like no other...Extremely entertaining show. This was a more subtle
version of 1995, minus the props.
3. 2000 - Millennium Celebration - Arguably, the best Cadets ending ever. The
last third of the show had the crowd enthralled...This show seemed like 2
minutes at Finals...something for everyone. IMHO, they deserved the GE title,
and championship by the slimmest of margins (Flame away).
2. 1992 - To Tame the Perilous Skies - Arguably, the other greatest Cadets
ending ever. Great drill and the best Cadets guard has ever been. What a mello
line!
1. 1993 - In the Spring... - This could very well be my favorite show of all
time...a young fan, so I've yet to see Star '93, but I think, from what I've
heard, that this was the closest Championship ever. Philip Bliss was
brilliantly played...the Septet gives me chills every time. Another
awe-inspiring drill from Bergen County.
Honorable Mention:
1985 - Jeremiah, Candide - They sold the most abstract show ever (up to that
point) to the judges and the audience
1998 - The visual program could only take it so far...IMHO, musically
uninteresting.
Flames and other opinions are gladly accepted.
Nick
9- 1983: Among their most musical performances. The Z-pull is still my
all-time favorite drill move. A lackluster drumline but a supoib
hornline (there's your warmth!). A bit too much "park and play" but
still more foot action than the other top-11 combined:)
8- 1993: I first saw this in Canton, OH.. their first show (in
exhibition--not scored). The first two-thirds were amazing in
communication. Fantastic drill; hot, hot, hot drumline; STRONG hornline
(not great.. but 10x better than the previous year); magnificent color
guard and BEST uniform EVER. The end of the show was a letdown
drill/musicwise.
7- 1995: I loathed props until I saw them march over, under, behind,
through, beside, around and 'twixt them. GREAT John Williams music that
ya don't hear every day. Another spectacular color guard...I believe
that was Mr. Sacktig's first solo drill. Having humongous shoes to fill
from his predecessors, he nailed it!
6- 1992: What a difference one year makes. they struggled throughout the
summer and managed to upend a really overrated Star of Indiana in
finals. Seamless writing of the drill from start to finish. Drums were
iffy and the hornline was kinda stinky. Peeps, ya gotsta be in tune on
Finals night! I don't care HOW cold it was. Second-best guard uni
ever...and worst color guard decision by a judge (several visual judges
agreed with me there).
5- 1987: Wow. Certainly DCI's most precise drumline in history (well..
1988 was equal IMNSHO). The musicality of all performers was top-notch.
Great drill, great horns---but played too timidly at times.
4- 1998: Stonehenge. Yumm-MEE! X marks the spot (Sacktig's favorite
thing to draw on drill paper?). Hornline was very precise and focused..
so why the iffy intonation at times? The end of the first (fast)
section's drill: DAMMIT. PBS and all the other vids I have do not SHOW
it. I'll NEVER know how they did it. Color guard was Tick City which was
a shame. Great book! (I'm still wondering how 7 feet of pole and 5-ish
feet of silk can still result in someone dropping a flag!) Shaddap,
Ivan, you've never spun on national TV. <-- I publicly touched
(too-SHAYED) myself! (I'll publicly touch myself in Buffalo though!)
3- 2000: You all saw it. FINALLY.. an 80's Cadet hornline again (and
1990). Viewing that show was like driving 85 mph down the highway
getting the BEST blowj----oops.
2- 1997: Best Sacktig drill ever. Hell.. best drill of the 90's (and
2000). Best book I've ever heard. Wish they would have done it last year
with more talent and the new horn staff. Spectacular guard (also a bit
ticky in finals). Hated that green in the unis though.. it was so 1988.
Otherwise, a truly amazing offering.
1- 1985. Best drum corps show ever. Period. Jawdropping opening (for its
time), MUCH MUCH MUCH improved drumline, unbelievable drill. The
construction/destruction theme of the visual show was inspired. I really
hope L Bernstein at least HEARD of the effort. The hornline ticked a
lot, but I was amazed (and I think the GE Brass judge was, too) how they
held the intensity through the awesome ending. Just watching them FLY
through each other to close Candide still does it to me.
A few thoughts about non-faves:
1996: Best color guard ever fielded in DCI. I'm trying to remember: I
got all the championship week sheets.. someone said "Seamless! Front to
back!" It was a GE judge.. either Visual or Music (I want to say
Visual...I'm too tired to go dig 'em out).
The repertoire was kinda dull for my taste.
1991: Loved the opener... tickless guard. One of their top 3. The rep
seemed a bit too self-serving like Star 93.. but not performed as well.
1990: Fun show. Great perfs all around (and another color guard judging
travesty). Too simplistic for Joisey.
1989: I love to watch it; I cannot bear to hear it. Brass score was
about 1.5 too high. Visually muddled at times, but the slo-mos were
breathtaking.
2001: Saw their second show of the year, and it gave me quite the chub.
I'll see if it subsides in Erie/Pittsburg...

Actually, it was blue for a significant part of the evening. As
midnight approached, we noticed it had started to come off. I wish I
would have taken a pic earlier that evening...
10. 1995 The Reivers was wonderful, the props were extremely effective,
drill was excellent.
9. 2000 This show had it all, g/e, musicality, frenetic drill, great
overall package.
8. 1983 The sign of things to come, the 1st Hannum line(for Garfield),
the recap of Rocky Point was a perfect closer, 1st show that featured the pit
as a voice of its own. Brass incredibly powerful, especially the baritones in
Rocky Point.
7. 1993 What a battle at finals! Although I still believe Star should have
won, this show was outstanding, dril, g/e, music. Philip Bliss was very
musical, and the battery coming forward with a cadence at a different tempo,
and the tempos then merging was a special moment in this show. Great guard
unis, and equipment(swords).
6. 1990 A celebration of not only Bernstein, and the Cadets relationship
with his music, but a celebration of the corps' development since 1983.
Candide was wonderful, the Mass selections were darker than '83, and the
ending(a combination both visually and musically of many of the great moments
in the previous 7 years) got a tremendous crowd resoponse, the z-Pull that
reversed, that '84 moment we were waiting for, but never got was brilliant. A
side note, this show came together in the spring, as the original plan that
year was an entire Mass show. Great way to enter the 90's for this corps!
5. 1984 One of the most influential drum corps show of all time!
Incredible drill, GE, music. The ending still gives me goosebumps anytime I
see or hear it. Possibly the best drill of all time.
4. 1992 Phenomenal guard(uniforms, equipment/dance work)! Great drill,
outstanding pit book. The ending, from the high step company front, both
musically and visually brought the crowd to its feet.
3. 1985 Threepeat! Jeremiah, Symphony 1 was the darkest music to hit the
field up to that point. Musically, the most challenging show of its
generation. Greatly improved drumline from the previous 2 years, great pit
involvement.
2. 1989 Starting the show as the announcer is saying, "Cadets of Bergen
County, you may take the field in competition" was genius. The signature
Garfield "G", in the opening showed that although there was a name change, this
corps was still true to its Garfield tradition of innovation. Slowmo was
great. Drill was incredible. Plummet Attack featured an aggressive
drumline(underrated) that was playing major notes, and excellent percussion
writing. This 1st Aungst book was very strong. The guard was amazing, and set
a new standard for Cadets' guards with great dance work, uniforms were
wonderful. Flag exchange from the drum major was a great moment. The
conflicting tempos in the finale, from "Bring Him Home" to "One Day More" set
up conflict, and this moment was the most brilliant, and misunderstood moment
in the entire activity that year. Judges did not quite get that one. Only
weakness of this show was the hornline, which was not as strong as previous
years.
1. 1987 One of my favorite shows of all-time. Great book by Klesch and
Hannum, amazing drill from Zingali, this show was strong enough to take the
title away from SCV. Finals performance was almost flawless, only "perfect"
drumline in DCI history. The company front is still one of the greatest
moments ever, and the ending within an ending was very effective.
Sorry, once I got going, I got longwinded.

To be fair, that drill probably turned a 3rd or 4th place drumline into a 7th

You're wrong, and I'm seeing to it that a constitutional amendment reverses the
color guard judges' decisions from those years.
sounds silly? some dumbassed feds want to make DOMA part of the constitution!
(see? they KNOW it's unconstitutional as it stands)
9. Garfield Cadets 1980- The corps which made all things possible. The corps
was left for dead in late June when they filled out the ranks with recruits
from the south. Not only did they make finals but they acheived the highest
placement by any Cadet corps in the DCI era to that point.
8. 1982- Sorry but my bias is showing (I have to include my ageout show).
Simply put, this show set the tone for the changes in the activity to follow.
Concerto in F still gives me goosebumps!
7. 1995- I found this show to be extremely entertaining and I enjoyed every
minute of it. My favorite moment, the drum major coming through the rotating
block at the end just before the "Iwo Jima re-creation".
6. 1989 Les Miserables- Plummet Attack was the most exciting moment of finals
night for me. Loved the dual tempos in "Bring Him Home" and how they melded
into one piece at the end.
5. 1985- IMO George Zingali's greatest drill. The circle pulling itself
inside out at the end of "Jeremiah" was no less than genius.
4. 1983- the first of the "threepeat". The "Z"-pull, Rocky Point reprise, and
Barbara Moroney's angelic solo work.
3. 2000- loved the music and the features at the end had me out of my seat.
2. 1987- Appalachian Spring. dedicated to the memory of Donald Angelica who
suggested the corps take on this piece of american music. The most innovative
company front in drum corps history.
1. 1984-West Side Story. This is my favorite show in the history of the
activity.

Excellent point. 0.3 over BD in GE drums could technically lay the claim to the
un-tie. (I give claim to a dear friend who judged that night... he ALMOST upped
BD by one tenth in his caption!.)
