I know there's a few lines I left out during the 70's era, but these are
the lines that come to my mind instantly.
I'm probably gonna go with SCV 74 OR 79 with the best snare lines in DCI
ever.
Who's your favorite?

They tied with Crossmen in execution at prelims in 78.

Ooooh, wow! Thank you. Nice to see somebody remembers. In 1978, Oakland
no longer had Tom Float, but they still had one fine drum line.
Sue
Yup. What a heartbreaker.
Sue
8 snares with two DCI snare individual champions, another who placed
second (may have won too), another who place third, another who placed
fifth,
and the other three were too busy signing autographs.

Haha, Bob. Young Andy says, "wahoo for Anaheim!" He says, and who was in
that line: Hardimon, Float, Al Murray......

I just finished watching an old McCormicks enterprise video featuring
SCV's drum line in 1979 (Building the Section) and they were truly
incredible. These guys were marching with slings at that time, and they
were hammering some strong rudimental drumming which is missing in
today's lines.
I've never had a chance to see the Oakland Crusaders drum line, so I
can't really say anything about them at all. I'll most definitely be
looking for footage of that line very soon.
I just turned 31 this past January, so i'm not an old head who loves old
drum lines. I just dig the drumming back in the 70's and 80's more.
My band director got me hooked on drum corps when I was in junior high
school and I haven't looked back since. I thought my chops were great at
that time until he showed me video of SCV's line he personally film for
himself, and my ego was crushed!
I think you can compare the snare lines from twenty five years ago to
today's lines. drum lines are drumlines!
Jamie

Hardimon and Float, yes. Al wasn't in the line until 74. Others included Gary
Wampler, Bruce Bonney, Terry Walker, Steve Munsey...and one more that won't
come to mind!!!!!
Am I close McDuff?

I'd have to agree there!

Yes, I remember Blue Rock. I saw them for the 1st time in
June of 71 in Somerville Mass. Them, 27th, Boston & Sac. I loved the 8 man
snareline--the biggest at that time & I loved American Salute. I miss corps
like that!!!!! That was a Joe Morella line right?
Floats vocabulary was hilarious!

Particularly when Tom Float was there, they were phenomenal. Float went
to Spirit of Atlanta in 1978, so you're no doubt familiar with the
impact he had there, and then with Blue Devils, etc.
Sue
Were all those same folks in the line in '74? I've got the tape of DCI
prelims that year (Thank you, Jodeen!), and that line is just amazing.
The stick tosses they were doing are mind-boggling.
Sue
Why Thank you. It did take more than just the snare line to achieve that
though.
They were the best for cleanliness, and still are. If only people could have
seen the shit they could do in the parking lot.
However, if one were to account for a more complex book and cleanliness,
then SCV 79 or 75 would have to get the nod. Had 1980 SCV been as clean as
those other two years, with that book, there would be no question who was
the absolute best.

John Swartz
Oakland Crusaders 77-80
You sure that was the 79 line? There was a video of SCV done at the
University of Michigan in 1974 that focused on the drum line. that's
probably the one you are refering to because everyone was using harnesses by
1979, especially SCV. If the opener is Die Gotterdammerung, it's 74. If it's
Verdi's Requiem, it's 79.

Another one has noticed!!!! Missing is the understatement of the year.

None exists commercially that I know of, or I'd have it.. In their infinite
wisdom DCI left us out of the best drumlines video. You used to be able to
order copies of individual performances a few years ago. I don't know if you
still can, I wish I had.

You can compare them to lines from 40 years ago too. Drumming is drumming
regrdless of when it takes place.

Really? Ive searched the net for confirmation of this but didnt find 78
prelims recaps. I think DCI.org had them before the re-design. If any body
can direct me to a link I d appreciate it.
Vince, you found me out.

Only five snares in 74: Float, Jim Brokke, Sam Kays, Al Murray and Lance
Kellogg. Don Porter, Jr., wanted a sixth. I won't say who was supposed to be
the sixth. I'll just say that I couldn't wear blue and leave it at that.

Hoping I can get a tape of that line. I've been told via e-mail that
they were, indeed, featured on the DCI best drumlines video, along with
the '76 line.

Hope that helps.

For me, being a horn guy, I can only really judge by the perc feature and
any exposed segments. That being said, and based solely on that condition,
it's have to be SVC '80. Stone Ground Seven was all the more awesome
considering the equipment of the time. I only heard one noticable muffed
attack (near the end with the keyboards were going up and down the scale).
I'd be tempted to go with '83 Bridgemen, just for the singles at the
beginning, but U couldn;t hear the rest of the line.
On the other end of the scale (and risking getting flamed here), I have to
say that '92 BD was probably the worst line I've ever heard. The lick at
the beginning of the perc feature was sooooooo bad. It was said by a friend
that they played it again in the '94 show just to prove it could be played
cleanly. The '92 line got beat by the Blue Knights, f'Pete's sake!
The best line of the top 4 in '92 was Star. Cavies and Cadets both had some
horrible exposed moments.
Oh well. Shields up.

Wampler's on the far left, with the unit number on his shoulder.
Is anyone else amazed at how young they/we look? Lance had just gone to the
AK from the '71 Diplomats (apologizing to us for doing so but we said, hey,
WE UNDERSTAND!!!).

Kirby,
I havent been able to corroborate this and people who were there with me say
your statement is incorrect.
Bet you thought I was going to say whats the point
of having an opinion if you cant cram it down someones throat?
I'm also looking for some numbers. Maybe Hannum or George can get some
info.
Scott Rogerson Crossmen 75-79
On the field Mike Hubbard and Lance Kellog were on the ends, Gary Wampler
and Bruce Bonney were next, Terry Walker and Mike Ellerby, and then Tom
Float and Ralph Hardimon were in the center. The idea was to put the tallest
members in the center and graduate to the shortest on the outsides. I cannot
remember the exact order from left to right, maybe Ralph or Duffy can help
out....
