We need more imput from the Midwest and West Coast Old-timers.
Also start thinking about the rosters for these old circuits; we need to keep
busy this winter.

If memory serves, I remember St Andrew's Bridgemen being represented at that

{Dusting off the old scrapbook - pulling out a booklet dated February 1967 -
but more likely printed later that Spring}
The California Circuit of Marching & Maneuvering Drum & Bugle Corps
Members =
Capitolaires (Sacramento) (All-Girls) - Originally known as Manhart
Capitolaires (after American Legion Post that sponsored corps); DM listed as
Cricket Hathaway (Mike Rubino's wife for over 25 years) (Capitolaires later
evolved to become the Capitol Freelancers)
Stockton Police Commodores (Stockton) - Horn Instructor listed as Jim Ott
Joaquin Caballeros (Stockton) (Senior Corps) - 45 horns in 1966; After senior
corps folded - remnants formed the Lodi Sentinels Junior Corps
Princemen (San Francisco - later from Pinole) - Formed in July 1966 as a merger
of Richmond Hawks and the Cathay of SF
Raiders (Sacramento) - Known as Raley's Raiders ('64-'65) due to supermarket
sponsorship
Royalaires (San Leandro)
Vanguard (Santa Clara) - Formed after Sunnyvale Sparks dropped drum corps from
their organization in March 1967; For some unknown reason the Circuit booklet
does not mention G.R. Royer, who was always considered to be the Corps Director
(as well as Horn Instructor)
Kingsmen (So. San Francisco) - Later became the Conquistadores
The California D&B Circuit was formed in January 1963. The original corps were
the Caballeros, Cathay, Hawks, Manhart Capitolaires and Thunderbirds.
Early Circuit Commanders included Tom Wuetrich ('63), Manuel Pimentel ('64-'65)
and Tom McPoil ('66-'67)
The booklet also includes a page dedicated to the California Color Guard
Circuit, which was formed in 1964. Members in 1967 included Blue Devils
(performers included Shirley Stratton (aka Shirley Dorrittie)), Caballeros,
Cathay, Capitolaires, Chapparells, Chinese Community, Kingsmen, Raiders, Royal
Lancers, Vanguard & Surbanettes (instructed by Shirlee Whitcomb - performers
included Pat Welch (aka Pat Carey)). The first Circuit Commander was Tom
Wuetrich (as position later held for several years by Jerry Seawright)
Any questions?

The article I have on the formation of the DCI makes no mention of St.
Andrew's. The 13 corps listed by Cliff were the original DCI members. I seem
to remember Carmen Cluna (St. Rita's Brassmen) attending a similar meeting.
There were probably some preliminary meetings which were reduced down to the
final 13 attendees.
Andy
Carmen's original thinking was that DCI would "In the Long Run" :
* Reduce the total number of corps in the activity.
* Reduce the Quality and Quanity of Non-DCI Open Class Contests
* The new organization (DCI) would have total control over judging and
what corps
appeared in what shows.
* Finally, the organization (DCI) would eventually have say over the
creative aspects of corps perforances.
I remember Carmen detailing his reasons very clearly why the Brassmen would not
be a member of DCI. I had a very rare opportunity to sit in front of the bus
with Carmen, Hy, and Tommy Martin while they discussed the DCI issue and the
impact it was having on the activity on the way to the 1973 World Open.
The Brassmen Administration wanted no
part of DCI, and Not that DCI didn't want the Brassmen.
>
Note - Carmen busted up our Blackjack game in back of the old Brooklyn bus, and
made me sit upfront to stay out of trouble
on the way to the open.
I should have only realized the importance of that conversation 26 years ago
and how
accurate Carmen's original forcast would turn out to be.
