1) Christmas parades.
I live in Ontario were it's not uncommon for a div2/3 corps to do
2-6 parades a weekend.I'm wearing next to nothing ,holding a big piece
of cold medal walking miles down the street on a super cold winter
day.Drummers can't wear glovesso their lives are sucking as much as
mine. After 1 parade we all get on a school bus and go do another and
another. It was my favorite reason to leave Ontario drum corps.
2)Money
We spend all this money on marching which alot of us can't afford.I'm
only marching my age out because someone else is paying for it.I don't
regret this but because I march I started College 2 years late(because
of money not smarts),I have no driving license(in Ontario it costs $600
to get it).Drum corps needs to be better financally. We all hear about
the corps that doesn't feed fit's members by the end of tour because
they can't afford to.This happens alot.
3)The summer.
This is the time of year we all wait for.In the summer I've raised the
risk of skin cancer more and more.I already can't practice with my shirt
off because I've got all these spots on my back. They weren't there
before.I play Contra and now I have back problems.I've had to take
therapy twice already for my back. Then we sleep on a bus like an bunch
of Indians on a train in India.A gym floor becomes a great thing. Before
drumcorps I never ever would think hey look at that gym floor I'd like
to sleep on it.
4)Florida
I just really really really really hate Florida. It's way to hot to have
finals there ever again.Hey lets put on our wool cotton blend uniforms
and go march a drumcorps show in the middle of a 110 degree Florida
afternoon.I think it's going to be fun.HOW MANY PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN
FLORIDA WEAR SWEATERS IN THE SUMMER!!GO MADISON.
5)Enviroment
I read a thing about the amount of trash an average drum corps
produces.I don't really remember right now but we all know it's
alot.I've seen at least 5 big bags from my corps a day in the
summer.I'll put those numbers up later. It's in the '92 program.
6)Shows
Where else would I run around with 30 pds of medal on my shoulder trying
to play Jazz.Real Jazz musicans would laugh out loud at me.So would ny
professial.Drum corps is the most unmusical thing in the world. There's
alot of corps who have none at all(M__i__o_ S_o__s).I bet I'm in troble
now.We are the only thing that will play in a stadium with 30,000 people
and have no amps going. It's like an old beatle concert. Were they had
about 2 amps each and Ringo had nothing.
I don't want you guys to get me wrong. My best friends are all from
Drumcorps. All my friends are drum corps people.I don't regret doing drum
corps but it's not a good thing to do.
I'm pretty drained right but I'll get some more for later.

Our next executive director of DCI perhaps?
Gee... that's quite enlightening. After several hours of consideration and
thought, I have figured out how to fix your problems with drum corps. DON'T
DO IT! If you don't like parades, don't march. If you don't like having
your summers taken up, don't march. I know it's difficult to understand,
but if you don't enjoy it, don't do it!
Devonda email me at spi...@yahoo.com

Canuck..
here's an idea for you..
DON'T DO IT!
I know it must come as a shock to you that you have a choice, but you do...
Drum Corps has it pros and cons.. but it is CERTAINLY not for EVERYBODY.. you
are just one of the ones it ISN'T for.. so what? I know kids who will list
the things you said as reasons drum corps sucks and say those are the reasons
they are involved (for better or worse, I choose not to say..)!!
But it is fairly inaccurate for you to say that drum corps sucks as a rule..
it may suck FOR YOU.. but not everyone feels that way.. obviously not or we
would not be here.. maybe you should go back to the rec.arts.marchingband
newsgroup..??? perhaps you'll be happier there since drum corps sucks so bad..
Stefanie
thats the best part!

who wears wool cotton blend unis?
Isn't that the beauty of it all? The whole duality of hating it and loving
it and hating it at the same time?

Hey, I remember the good old days of High School Marching Band and am
reminded of a little thing we sung once, It goes to the tune of Jingle Bells
High school bands cross the land in the pouring rain
marching on a night like this can really be a pain.
Horn is froze, so's my toes, wish I were in bed.
Man, I hope a lightning bolt won't strike me in the head.
There's more to it than that verse, but that's the part that really applies.
Winter sucks! That's why corps is (primarily) in the summer! Suck it up.
Whaaaaa! I have to march when it's cold... WHAAAA!!!! Oy vey...

Not EVERY corps charges so much. The price you pay for dues largely depends
on how your corps handles their money. ($600 Canadian? What does that
translate to in US cash... 50 cents or so? hehehehe) I don't know the
conversion, but I only paid $300 my rookie year, $250 my second year, and $2
25 for my 3rd, and then it goes down by $25 every year i'm in. Is it that
cheap because CS is a division II corps? Don't think so, Scouts only pay
$500. Dunno if theirs decrease, though. If you march someplace that knows
how to manage money well, and doesn't buy brand new EVERYTHING every year,
your dues won't be so bad.

Hey, it's all good. 1) Wear some sunscreen, boy! 2) If you can't handle a
Contra switch to Bari, or all the way up to sop, or Mello (Can't suggest
mello, though... buncha losers, all of em! *wink* ) If you can't PHYSICALLY
deal with Contra, don't play Contra! Hello, genius. 3) Indians on a train
in India? Dots or Feathers? Whichever, bus rides are like the best part of
tour! You get the self installed stereo thumpin' some good music, and just
jam! (CS'98's Bus 2 had two 6x9's in back, facing front, a pair o' MTXs
halfway forward, facing back, and a pair o' 10" subs under the two back
seats, with a 300W amp powering it all, including this sweet little AIWA
stereo, which we built a box for, and attached to the luggage rack in the
back of the bus.) I'm still recuperating from the all-night disco party on
bus 2 after the Racine show last season! I never thought Pure Disco and
Pure Disco 2 would get THAT much use in one night! As for the Gym floor -
well, get a thicker sleeping bag. Hey, some bass drummer brought a little
inflatable boat to sleep in the gym. It was pretty funny to see, but he was
short enought to fit in it nicely. He liked it, and he never actually
touched the floor. Hell, in Orlando when we got to the Motel (Scouts and
Sound took over a good portion of an EconoLodge in Kissimee (sp?) for DCI
time) he filled up the bathtub, inflated his little boat and slept in there!
It was goofy as hell, but then everyone else got a bed (two to a bed), and
nobody was on the floor. Bring a sleeping mat or something.

Drum corps is unmusical when the corps can't play music well, or the music
chosen bites. If you think the Scouts are unmusical you're probably
inebriated, or you recently suffered a major blow to the head. As for amps,
for some corps (BD, Phantom, Scouts, some others too) amps would not help!
Some corps just have balls so big that no pissy little amplification system
is gonna do ANYTHING good at all... It's all about balls, not about amps.
If you got the balls, and you USE EM when you're on the field, you don't
need amps.

I disagree. It's the BEST thing to do.

It does have its moments of lunacy, you must admit...anyone who has ever
tried to explain drum corps to someone who didn't know what it is knows
what I'm talking about! We've all had to answer those questions...
"So you fly all across the country, right?"......"Uhhhhh, no, we ride on
buses."
"So you stay in hotels, right?"................."Uhhhh, no, we sleep on gym
floors."
"You get to eat in restaurants, right?"......."Uhhhhhh, no, we eat a lot of
PB&J."
"Well, how much do you get paid?"........"Uhhhhhh, we have to pay to do
it."
It's kinda like those Rent-a-car commercials (Hertz, I think)...."Not
exactly!"
Let's face it...drum corps IS a stupid activity...it's also a GREAT
activity and I love it!
It has its own inner beauty and its own inner lunacy, just like politics,
relationships, religion (don't even get me started on that one!)...
Everyone just relax, watch some Sifl & Olly on MTV (gotta love the sock
puppets!), and have a few laughs!
In the words of the great Russell Bly...."Nothin' but love!"

As a native of Florida, I am tired of people exagerating the climate
just to make thier point stronger. I dare you to find one day in
recent history when it has been 110 degrees in Florida. It is a rare
day when it breaks 100.
Now the thunder storms that pop up almost every afternoon is another
story.
But I do agree that we've had enough of Florida to last a lifetime.

Drum corps trash is pretty insignificant. If you think a corps with
5 big bags of trash is a lot, then you should see what a school
produces on an average day! Much more than 5 bags.
IMO there is MUCH more environmental damage caused by poor intonation
(noise pollution) then food truck trash.
Seriously though, there is more damage to the environment done
by BAD DIESEL BUSSES than trash generated by the kitchen crew.
The grills are run by natural gas (propane), the plug-ins are
clean electric. The generator only runs when the truck is
moving down the road.
Other than plastic plates or cups, corps food trash is quite
bio-degradable (although the EPA hasn't ruled on Chicken Slop yet).

No, I think RAP is.

Interestingly I heard an Entertainment news blip of the
Rolling Stones on the radio today. They are releasing yet another
live album. They talked about the bad acoustics of outdoor venues,
even the nice, pricey new stadiums. They were made for sports
and not for acoustics.
Duh.

Sounds like your going to have fun aging out.
Jay
Sure is! I know what you mean, I love the Bruins and Patriots(Boston area
resident here) but right now, they both suck ass.
I will not face it. So, just because we do stuff that is hard to do, and we
make sacrifices to do them and we work our butts off to get where we want to
be, that makes the activity stupid?
I suppose joining the Peace Corps is stupid, too, huh?
The only things I've ever found worthwhile long after I was finished with them,
were the things that were hard to accomplish.. the things I had to go through
hell and high water to get to..
This activity is hard, no doubt. Many times the things we endure don't make
sense, for sure.. but in all, I'd say it's FAR from stupid..
For it to be something stupid, we would have to reap no benefit from it. That
is clearly not the case and I know we can all agree on that.

Unfortunately, Mike, these parades generate a lot of revenue for a
smaller Div. II/III corps. I know the corps I works with (St. John's)
is set to do about 16-20 parades this winter. The money we generate
from these parades will, hopefully, pay off our bus bill from the
summer. And yes, Mike, it is cold, bloody freezing. Welcome to Canada,

If money is a problem, you should go march Patriots, where they pay
you to march!! (Just kidding, Pat and Jamey!!) Mike, when you turned
16, there was no graduated licensing, and getting a licence cost about
$100 if that. Don't blame your laziness in getting your licence on
Drum Corps. Sure, college is expensive, but we do have OSAP (Ontario
Student Assistance Plan) which I am sure you would, or already did
qualify for. Which corps don't feed their kids properly?

Don't take your shirt off then. And for the times when you do, I'm
told there is this amazing product that filters out all the harmful
rays from the sun. It is called sunblock, or something like that. As
for playing Contra, you chose the horn, deal with it. If not, there
might be an opening in the pit. I hear they practice in the shade, so
that solves your sun problem, as well. And as for sleeping on the bus,
you obviously have never had a comfy bus partner to share the seat

Mike, what time were the Bluecoats on each day? I'm sure it wasn't the

In the grand scheme of things, this number is small. Check out a
schools trash at the end of the day. I would think the amount of

the amount produced by 10 McDonalds in a week....you want to complain

Hmm...I don't recall the Bluecoats actually running (j/k). Mike, we
had an arguement just last week about dance music, and I said I didn't
think dance music was true music. Your argument was music is anything
that comes from the heart, and you defended dance music. So tell
me,Mike, is drum corps music if it comes from the heart? Most
unmusical? Tell that to the Kansa City Symphony, who invited the 1989
Phantom Regiment to join them on stage and play. Could you imagine if
we had amps? There would be more complaining than anything.

I think your Madison Scouts comment was a pretty cheap shot. You must

A fellow Sifl & Olly watcher!!!! Woo-hoo!!!
Yes, it used to be on at 12:30, but they switched it to 1am...sometimes
it's not on at all. I usually check the MTV home page to see when it'll be
on.
I swear, after a while, you would swear that those things are really
talking! That show cracks me up!

Oh, please! Lighten up..............I'm in no mood to get into a semantic
argument over the word "stupid" when I made it perfectly clear that I LOVE the
drum corps activity. I can't help it if you can't acknowledge how crazy this
activity can be, and have a sense of humor about it without getting yourself in a
tizzy. Life is too short for that nonsense...

I, for one, am going to miss the whole Epcot getaway day during Finals
week. I will NEVER forget that all-you-can-eat meal at the Polynesian

I'm still full from that......whew!

Let me get this straight, you love drum corps and you say its the most
greatest thing in the world and it changed your life. But you say its
dangerous, polluting, unmusical, and an improper way of spending your
money. Not to mention its takes up your valuable time in the summer?
Ok, now that we've established that. Damn, I'm kinda confused. What is
there to talk about. If there is all this bad stuff about corps, what
is there to love? What are you trying to prove? Are you saying that we
should love corps, but think its a bad thing to do? Hmmm....kinda
weird. Oh yeah, your cheap shot at Madison wasnt cool.

Back when ***I*** marched in the Bluecoats, we didn't have those comfy
all-cotton uniforms they do now... plus cool, heat-reflective WHITE
pants.
I aged out in a WINTER Marching Band uniform made of 100% wool. The
jacket was double-layered across the front (trapping heat). And in
1988, I think there were some 20 90+ degree days and an easy dozen
100+ days. We also didn't have A/C on the busses (which do now, and
on some buses -- at least several years ago -- worked WAY too well).
Wah!
I'm tellin' ya... those marching today are wimps!

Okay, you first.
I will call Bill and request that from now on, you don't get
any plastic plates, cups or silver ware. No cups for water
breaks either! No more silver polish for the horns (the rags
with the polish on it are health and bio-hazard concerns).
Laundering the uniforms is a waste of water and soap... they only
get dirty again.
Seriously, though... Drum corps are pretty eco-safe when you
consider the alternatives!
Bluecoats entertained thoughts of doing away with plastic plates
to replaced by slotted trays (like school cafeterias). The suggestion
was that members would wash the trays after their meals.
Obviously we never seriously entertained this thought because as
it stood then the members did a LOUSY job of cleaning off the trays
the plates were on. The choice would then be to have a volunteer
(which corps are in short supply of) take 2 hours out between meals
to scrub down each tray with appropriate cleansers to sterilize them.
That ain't gonna happen. The alternative is worse. Drum corps is
a closed environment. When a serious, and contagious, affliction hits
one person it's rare for it to stop there. A/C on busses gets
recirculated. Trays are re-used. Water coolers are passed around, etc.
There have been ample stories of corps having scores of members sick
at one time, or to pass around colds. It's why many corps do not allow
members to bring their own water coolers out to practice. Sharing is
not good in drum corps when you are sick!
So which would you rather have Mike?
Extra trash (which, again, the vast majority of is recyclable!) being
left behind or unsanitary conditions that would lead to you (and others)
becoming sick?
BTW- how long did it take your belly button to heal that one summer?
Infections are a bitch, ain't they? Try food poisoning due to
contaminated
foods. Disposable plastics keep you healthier!
> I killed only 1 person but Jeffery Dommer(wrong spelling)killed 12 that

No, it makes your terrible. At least Jeffrey Dahmer consumed his kills,
therefore causing less waste and ecological damage!

Just being in corps forever doesn't mean you're not eligible to be a
wimp.
Sometimes a true test of courage is being able to walk away from
something
you think your addicted to. Courage is saying "no" when everyone else
is saying yes (or being wimpy).

And then we marched our show in our bare feet, on *real* grass, in the snow.
I don't know how it snowed when it was 100+ degrees, but let me tell you that
back then it did. And when we were done, we didn't have an equipment truck, or
buses. We marched down the dirt road to wherever our next show was. . . why, I
remember one summer when I marched from Atlanta to De Kalb, and did I complain?
Noooo. . . .

And it was fun watching wimps like you in Florida whining and crying that you
were freezing when the temperature was in the 60's.
I just loved it the winter all the pipes froze on those expensive beach front
condos in Florida and Alabama and you all crying about it cause you couldn't
take it.
Not to mention how stupid it is when people in Florida have their beach front
condos destroyed by hurricanes and actually whine to the government for money
to rebuild them! That's as bad as people in Californina living on fault lines!

Actually, I attended a camp where all I had were shorts and tshirts. THe temp was
around 40 degrees.
I dealt with it.

Coastal californians to it too.. but they build multi-ton homes on top of sand

That's right. Unfortunately too many in our government controlled public
schools have been indoctrinated into actually believing that government is the
only and/or a big part of the solution for any problem when in fact the problem
is government poking it's nose unconstitutionally into every facet of our
lives.
No Erin, there is nothing funny about hurricanes or any other natural disaster
destroying people's houses. The problem comes when those people think for some
reason that the government HAS to bail them out. It's called indivual
responsibilty to have your stuff in order so you don't have to be babysat by an
inept federal government that has no business in anything except for what is
called for in the original constitution.
