I know that many of us complain about the attrition of Jr. Drum and
Bugle Corps, and how many jr drum and bugle corps have either folded or
gone inactive under the leadership of DCI.

I know that many have heard the allegations that in the 1970's there
were almost 500 jr drum and bugle corps, and now after so many years of
DCI control we have less than 30 or so jr corps depending upon how you
wish to count them.

Does it bother us that the Troopers aren't marching this year , that
the Freelancers, Skyriders, Suncoast, North Star, Bridgemen(Jr)and a
whole long list of other top jr corps no longer exist.

well it bothers ole Howdy here.

So, are these allegaions of alleged 500 + jr corps true, or were the
good ole days just not as good as we remember them?

The truth is that the good ole days of drum and BUGLE corps were good,
and we did have a lot of competing jr drum and bugle corps and here is
the proof from www.corpsreps.com

Here is a list of jr drumcorps, almost all of them inactive or folded:

Feel free to use any of these for your own t-shirt(s) this year:

I figured out DCI killed drum corps, and all I got was this lousy
t-shirt.

DCI: It's broken. Fix it.

DCI: The World's Top Drum and Bugle Corps ... well, what's left of
them, anyway ... and they're not exactly drum and bugle corps ....

Will the last corps to fold please turn out the lights?

483 - 413 = Drum Corps "International"?

DCI: The World's Last Standing Drum Corps-Related Organizations
1972 - 483
2005 - 70
2010 - 50
2014 - 40
2020 - 30
2027 - 20
2038 - 10
(optional reverse - spin-off of Willie Nelson's 'On the Road Again':
"Off the Road Again ... Just Can't Scrape a Corps Off the Road Again
...." with little musical notes around it.)

[Full list of the 413 corps that folded under DCI's administration]
(Optional reverse: These silenced veterans brought to you by DCI and
its 70 surviving corps).

DCI Finals' "Elite" viewership:
1976 - 6,000,000 viewers
2005 - 435,000 viewers
(Optional reverse: Was it something we said?)

DCI Board of Directors
"To Do" List:
1. Tour corps to death
2. Eliminate bugle industry
3. Broadcast Finals on the Impulse Buying Network

There's a reason they used bugles to wake people.

I think I might have missed something here.....
(I've been away from DC, from June 1985 to Dec. 04)

<looking for the names of the DC's I've marched with>
I know that the Lynn Continentals (from Lynn, Mass.) are no more, why
are the Boston Crusaders, Boston, Mass. on this list? Again, I'm not
asking to start something, just wondering how BAC got on this list...
(and then there's the Renegades on this list.....(did I miss it, that
there WAS a Jr. Corps by the name Renegades from Quincy between
1985-2004? Or could this be a list of ALL DC's that "are no more"?)

I'm in no way looking to defend DCI, after 20 yrs away from DC it's
been quite a "learning" curve as to what in the hell has happened to
DC....

Just wondering about the list and the names of the DC's I've marched
with.

Tony. It said: "Here is a list of jr drumcorps, almost all of them
inactive or folded: "

Not sure how complete the list is, but it sure is large with not many
are left.
All the best,

Even though corpsreps will not listen to people who know better, three
of those corps are one corps. And, I would imagine this is true of
others on that list.

What corps is that?

Kewanee Black Knights 1966-1973 (and earlier as a senior and junior
corps)
Geneseo Knights 1987 (and earlier)
Quad City Knights 1988-1989 (and 1992-1995 I think)
Knight Command 1990

And, unlisted...

The Knights (1991 - single year merger of the Emerald Knights and Quad
City Knights)

Thanks George...
I read the "Here is a list of jr. drumcorps, almost all of them
inactive or folded". I was asking why the Boston Crusaders was on the
list?

>
> And that's just the juniors!

Ron,
That's why I inquired about the Renegades....(again, unless I'm missing
something? was there a jr. corps by the name of Renegades from Quincy,
Mass between 1985 and 2004? *the time I've been away from DC*) the
Renegades I marched with was from Quincy, Everett and Boston. We were
introudced by the announcer at every show as "From the "WILDS" of
Massachusetts" The Renegades was a sr. corps and competed in the Red
Carpet Association circuit. (don't understand why the Renegades would
be on a jr. corps list of corps no longer active. Thay are no longer
active, but we were a sr. corps)

Thanks,
Tony ;-)

I have let him know a few times. I have been ignored every single time,
or I am told that I am wrong. Strange. I figure I would know best since
I marched in that corps with three different names over a four year
span.

But, I suppose I *like* to tilt at windmills. :)

of the same history. We try to clear this up as much as possible through the
narrative section. I'm sorry I can't list these organizations in a way that
makes everyone happy. There are people who want them separate and people such
as you who want them combined. Keeping them separate makes the most sense to
me.

As for the 1991 Knights, I have that information listed under Quad City.

Hey there,

I don't know if you'll be interested since this post is a while back.

Anyway, I was part of this group below in the Colour Guard - yes I was a Flag Twirler - I did it one season 1976 - was unable to attend the last competition in Jonquiere, Quebec but my corps went on to win Trumpet B Trophy along with a special mention for the choreography of our Colour Guard throughout the season.

That was the good old days - I miss it... Les Triolets from Hull, QUE.

The reason I'm posting - I was just reminiscing with my children and decided to look on the internet and see if I could find old pictures - since all those precious photos were lost when my mother died in 97.

It was great to be part of something like that - I'll never forget it, the first competition was in Matane, Que. the huge shrimps available for snacks at the college where we slept during the practice and competition there. June or July 76.

Cheers! And hope this helps!

This thread is really old but:

Listed: Dirigo Jets.....please list them from Greater Portland, Maine. They were at one time the Andrew Jets-feta Corp to the Andrew Sabres of the Harold T. Andrew Post of Portland, Maine. :) But Chick Wilder, Owner, decided to go out on our own and we became the Dirigo Jets...:)

Thanks :)

As to the Renegades of Quincy, MA. This Jr Corps started up in the fall of 1972, and folded after the 1980 season. I marched with them from 1974-1978, playing baritone my 1st yr and then contra-bass, my remaining 4 yrs. This corps came about because of the Senior Renegades from Boston. The city of Quincy gave them a choice of the Senior Renegades moving their operations to Quincy, in order to start up a Jr Corps with the same name. I later marched in 1981 with the New Dimensions of Norwood, that 1 year. I am now playing contra-bass with North Star Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps of Lynn, MA. My 1st year with Renegades, after getting a release from St Theresa's CYO Band of West Roxbury, we had 120 kids in the corps. The corps consisted of 35 horns, 25 drum section, 2 drum majors, 2 color captains, 2 in the American Flag section, 12 sabres, 12 rifles, 12 trick flags and 18 regular flags. The Renegades marched in 3 drum corps circuits: CYO, Mayflower, and Greater New England.

At Santa Clara, class is a core value. Tolerance is big part of having even a modicum of it. When I marched, there were plenty of gay dudes, some closeted, some not....(not that there's anything wrong with that) Rosemont is all male so obviously there is a history of its structure attracting gay and bisexual men. Santa Clara is co-Ed so our sexuality as a whole has always been more conservative; still no veteran worth his salt would trash a person or corps based on race, creed, color, sexuality. I've never heard my corps called the "Gayguard" before, but your tone has the air of being insulting. I must take the high road and not flame bait you, however, were I still in the corps, it would've been fun to hear you say that to my face, then break ranks right in front of me do Id have an excuse to knock you the fuck out without even breaking stride. Where did you March, I mean get cut from?

I marched with the Blue Angels 65-67. Mr. Fullerton was the manager, gary, his son was the Drum Major, I belive his daughter' name Jerry, Duwayne Smally on the Contra. I departed the Angles and returned to the El Toreadors till the military got me 1967. It was a great Corps with great folks, I recall some trips on the ole Blue Bus. Gotta Love it!

Can you tell me what years your son marched Mauraders? I work on a government ship with a fellow DCI member who marched Mauraders in the mid-late 70's and still lives in Longview. Thanks. (Duane Akers, Alumni, Black Watch - Highland Regiment 1974-1976, Auburn, WA)

Nancy, I'm from Pittsburgh and grew up in the early 70's. We went to at least one competition a summer (usually in Butler, PA). I live in MD now and I met my mom, dad, and sister for a few competitions in Cumberland, MD over 17 years ago. It was always a lot of fun. And I absolutely love listening to the corps.

I was in Golden Eagles from Philadelphia, PA. We had pretty old uniforms, great instructors and fantastic competitions and parades. The competitions on football fields were great, the parades on the cobblestone streets not so great. I was french horn and dreamed of being playing the mellophone! My BF was a drummer. I met my first steady girlfriend in the corps, we stayed together for many years. Fantastic memories of the entire experience! Proud to have marched!
