Thanx for the 72 roster. Memories...

We (Sentinels) followed their progress intensely from about 67 thru 72.

I had the pleasure of a chance meeting with Richard Oliverio, and, of course, I
already knew McD from the old days. Don Porter was master and commander...

Who was working the drumline at this time? I seem to have forgotten. (the

Ahem... brings to mind a story.

We attended their (Kingsmen) show in Anaheim, 1968. The Stockton Commodores,
Portland Royal Lancers, and SCV were all in attendance.

Our drum instructor and lead snare Lynn Davis (ex-Shamrock, RIP) got a bug in his
ear when he heard the K-Men streetbeat. A five stroke roll going into four eighth
note flams and followed with some very offbeat crap. Very catchy... and ear
friendly.

We (Sentinels) literally ripped them off with our own version of the very same
damn thing and used it on the street for about the next 3 years. Thanx K-Men, you
were an inspiration.

I can still play it by memory... and use it as part of my warm-up exercises. :-)

Shit, JB. I should clean the sleep out of my eyes and have at least 1 coffee under
my belt before reading posts. It was right there.

Donnie Porter as Caption Head and Michael Ellerby as lead snare and instructor.
Duh...

Heh... I'm just a drummer. ;-)

Trivia: Andy Garcia (no relation to Dead-Heads) ex-tymp with the K-Men. Now owns/operates a small store
called the 'Seattle Drum Shop' in Greenwood.

It's right off the northern shore of Greenlake on Aurora. Close to the U-District and all those long
hair hippie types. ;-)

He loves to talk about old corps and gives me a 'deal' on sticks.

Jerry had a little brother but I cannot remember his name. I remember he was
in the feeder corp for a few years in the 69, 70, 71 timeframe.

Open mouth, insert foot, and chew vigorously.

Sheesh, JB. I woke up at 3 AM and thought, damn... his name is Jerry Garcia. Andy Garcia is an actor I saw
in a movie just the other day.

Yea, he's a nice guy. Although, I don't think he'll be marching tymps anytime soon since he's about as big
as one. :-)

Jerry taught VK drums in '75 BTW. Good set drummer too.

...that was '77, Bill. Jerry wrote, taught and played in the snare
line that year. I think Ted Zielinski helped write the book, too...I
know, man, it's hard to keep things straight...especially when dealing
with the 70's...LOL. cg

I know Al played in the snare line in 1974. I don't know if he
marched any other years with them.

OK guys! This is my husband you're all talking about! He will be
quite bemused when I point this out to him <g> don't know if he'll
chime in, he's not much of a usenet kind of guy. BUT I did want to
clarify that Seattle Drum Shop has moved to 42nd and Aurora in Seattle
- no longer near Greenlake. If you're in the area, stop by! Also
that he has his own line of drums - Garcia Custom Drums. Check it out
at www.garciadrums.com.

He'll be in Denver for DCI.

I've never posted to this (or any) ng before, but couldn't resist this
topic!

Most definitely a mangled spelling there, Charlie. "Teddy Z" is more than
sufficient - and yes, it was the two of them who were responsible for the drum stuff
that year.

> >I know, man, it's hard to keep things straight...

That would be "clear", Charlie. <insert "hard" and "straight" jokes here...>

> >especially when dealing with the 70's...LOL. cg

Teddy and Jerry were on the staff bus with us. Not only do I remember, I have a
coupla nice pictures of both... But even more memorable were all those times in
Harry's Hole, over at the Murray-Teddy par-tays...

I remember him to have been a very nice boy then. Hope he hasn't changed much.

Oh well... ;-) At least he WAS in Denver for DCI (and American Legion Nats) in the
1970's...

Prolly a good thing I don't remember many guard types from 1978 BD. Now that your
and Jerry's resume credits are known, I wouldn't be surprised if y'all became really
popular. Take care...

If he doesn't chime in I most certainly will. I first met Jerry when he was
in the Kingsmen "B" corp in 69. Was and always has been one of the nicest
guys you would ever meet. Would go out of his way to do anything for you.
Quite simply put he epitomizes what drum corp is supposed to be all about.

In addition, I had the opportunity to meet up with Jerry and his wife Cheryl
in Madison during the DCI 30th anniversary celebration. Cheryl is a fine
lady and a class act. I am happy that he found someone like her to enrich
his life.

Hi Catherine! I lived in Delavan for a year when I was four, while my
parents were teachers at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf. We moved
to Concord from there, so I can't really say I'm FROM Delavan
(actually, I was born in Nashville!). However, I have many fond
memories of swimming and ice skating at the Lake and the cobblestone
street through downtown Delavan and the BRATWURST!

I am amazed that this little known factoid came out! Whomever have
you been talking to?!?

BTW - I only marched Blue Devil Winterguard in '78, but I do remember
meeting you on a couple of occasions (I was Lisa Berkey and Carrie
Mandeville's roomate, but don't hold that against me)and of course
Jerry remembers you well. Colorguard became too much been there, done
that for me (I regret I was too old to experience the advent of dance
becoming the foundation of guard, I would have enjoyed the
challenge)so I moved to Seattle to teach the Cascades and met Jerry,
who was teaching the Black Watch. The rest, as they say, is history.

Jerry and I thank eveyone for their kind words on these threads. He's
a little blown away, amused, gratified, embarassed, etc. We'll be in
Denver and hope to see you all there....

I may not make it to Denver, but tell Jerry I still want my McCormick snare
sticks back. He "borrowed" them for the West Coast Express performance in 1975.

Thanx, Cheryl. My kid sister is also named Sheryl and marched Sentinels guard from about 69-74. Alongside her
BIG bro... me.

I didn't know Jerry moved his shop (closer to the U-District). It's been a few years since I dropped in. I
should.
