Kevin Feeney... As a leader, he was the best. As a conductor... Well, how
many DM's do you know who can conduct 2 vs. 3? ('94 drum solo). He can
also do 3 vs. 4, it just wasn't in the show...
I must also say, I get a kick out of VK's drum majors...
Announcer: "Drum major, is your corps ready?"
DM: <puts on "how would I know" look and turns around>
DM: "IS THE CORPS READY?"
Corps: "YEAH!"
DM: "IS THE CORPS READY?"
Corps: "YEAH!"
DM: "IS THE CORPS READY?"
Corps: "YOU KNOW IT, BROTHER!"
DM: <turns back around and salutes...>

Why? Affirmative Action or something? Giving 'em special treatment? If
they were great, sure, but if not, well, let 'em go down with the rest of
the men! (Oooh, you'd better watch out for the wrath of Ms. Mav... :-)
This did remind me, though, of the DM of the MetroPark RoyalAires in
'90... You just had to see her! It's not something I can easily put into
words, but talk about getting into the music!

Best drum major ever---that's easy---Scotty Paulson of the Kilties!!! He
won showman of the year at the VFW Nationals every year he was DM--64 to
70 (Kilts didn't go in 71). But since that's way before the time of most
people on RAMD, they wouldn't have seen him in action.
The DM's of today, I don't know. They stand on a podium and direct. The
DM's of old were on the field--actually some had drills. Which is
better? A lot of times the old DM's didn't even direct until the
standstill concert number.
But there are still are many good one's out there today and I agree with
Kent--Kevin Feeny was one of the best of the modern era.
Speaking of female DM's, like Kent did---there was one with the Cedarburg
Thunderbolts in the early 70's that , well, she directed with more than
just her arms if you know what I mean. Was sure fun watching her!
Frank
No.
How about:
Rick South (SCV DM 1976-1979)
Mike Zapanta (SCV DM 1979-1982)
Marcia Hanson (Phantom 1984-85, I think)
Carl (black guy, Freelancers, early 1980's)
Phantom DM 1989 (gorgeous guy about 10 feet tall. When he pulled out the
baton from his shoulder, all the women in the audience nearly peed
themselves)
Steve Sanger (BD DM early 1980's)
I always remember Gail Royer saying that he would never choose a female
DM, but if he had to it'd be Marcia Hanson. She was one of the best DM's
I've ever seen!
Martha Leeson

Oh, is that the drum majors' job? I thought it was to paint the field and to
keep a tempo during basics. DM? Podium? I have never heard of that.
:P
The worst drum major of all time was that guy from Freelancers a few years ago
that jumped around alot and flipped his hair all around whilst he conducted --
Well in drum corps terms, I guess that means he was the best... he certainly
was the most entertaining. I really did dig it in a VK show in 90 I think
where the DM pulled a 2x4 out just like the PR guys pull out a baton -- that
was GREAT!
Seriously folks, a good DM is an example and a leader for a corps -- they
always worked soo hard. They had duties like showing the pit where to nap,
etc...
I dont know what the hell Phantom did with a drum major like Aaron Ozminski --
he was much better peeling paint as the loudest Euph player in history than he
was waving a stick and looking like a pretty boy.
:P
All in fun!
Happy Holidays everyone!

Also, our DM in 1979 Fla. Vanugaurd Sylvia Hernandez, played a mellophone

It's me...your worst nightmare! ;) Seriously though, you are totally right.
If a woman can't conduct, she doesn't belong on the list. I found it
amusing this year, however. Did anyone catch the oh, so very obvious
"woman's place" in the DM hierchy? Yeah, I'm just noting something
that could very well be coincidence, but....(just for *fun* let's notice the
following...)
All the female DM's were in the bottom, 21-13. From Mandarins to
Southwind, Troopers to VK (alternates), the ladies dominated the
bottom corps, while the men took the top 12-1 spots. Do I sense a
glass ceiling that needs to be broken here? Hmmmm......
Let's see - back to our topic at hand: Best DM - that Freelancer dude
from the early 90's. What a hambone! Also almost any SCV DM who
were notorious for winning the "last place = 1st place" race when DM's
are called to the front. I know here on the west SCV always wins. Any
body know the Finals tally so far? Anybody keeping score? :)

I forgot his last name, but he was a baritone 1977-1981 and DM
1982-1983. His greatest moment was from "Even Now" in 1983:
During the soft part "We have something you're really gonna like!"
Just before the hit "Here it is!"
Just after the hit "Did you like it?"
Ranks right up there with "Make the plane come" from Madison '79 among
the famous things drum majors have yelled on recordings.

Who could forget ole' Zap! He taught us in '87 and he would always sing to me,'para bailar La Bamba!' I remember him walking down =
the horn block at a show in Sioux City, IA ('81). Boy was he intimidating! I place him as drum corps legend.
Carl 'Andale! Andale! Playball!' Allison (I think) I remember from touring with the FL in '82. He was also the incredible bari s=
oloiste in '81 Malaga (a better version than Madison's '95 version I think).
Milt Allen from the '80-'82 Sky Ryders could work an audience like nobody I've ever seen to this day.
Dan (I forgot his last name) from Madison ('78-'80) was also just as charismatic.
But the ultimate, Drum Major...Steve Sanger, Blue Devils '80-'82. The epitome of confidence, cool, calm, professionalism, and leade=
rship. Even when he spoke softly he commanded attention. He was intimidating without being frightening. To this day I aspire to h=

: Rick South (SCV DM 1976-1979)
*The Best* drum major that I have ever worked with - no contest. He was
a great leader, excellent musician (he even played a baritone solo during
production - 1979?). Rick also taught the B corps winter guard back in
'76 or so (with Betsy, when Charlotte was guard captain - maybe I have
the years mixed up, but who cares). Rick was one who was always around
to help out as best he could with all sections - and epitomized what
Santa Clara was about, on and off of the field. It's wonderful for
SCV to have the legend back.
<snip!>
: Steve Sanger (BD DM early 1980's)
Steve was a fun DM, but most of you missed some of his best performances.
When he teamed up with Mike Anderson for the 1982 season, the two of
them used to do the best SCV drum major impressions. F***ing hilarious!

Well Martha, back when I marched Royer wouldn't let females in the drum
nor horn line, let alone be drum major - although a couple of the guard
captains did help direct a few tunes here and there. I can picture Joy
Modesitt and Patrice Alvarado both performing as such, but can't remember
the years (I guess I'm not so young after all :-)

I think he was this year's replacement for the '94 Trooper DM. :)
However---- super nice guy who took his job very seriously
with a mature and respectful attitude. Is he coming back this
year?
Tony started as DM at the age of 17 in 1987, one of the toughest years for
the Trooper organization emotionally, and handled it very gracefully.
Tony was a great leader, a good friend, had a great voice for commands, an
incredible prescence in uniform, and was one of the best examples of the
Trooper ideal that I know. Plus, he looked great in the uniform!
Tony marched a total of 13 years-- "A" corps '83-'91, and "B" corps
'79-'82. Talk about dedication! In '83, at the age of thirteen and being
constantly picked on by Jones, many of the vets came up to Tony and told
him "you're going to be DM one day." He was groomed for the job from day
one in the "A" corps.
Trivia question: Name the first non-Casperite Trooper DM and when he was
DM.

about Becky (Star DM '86-'88), the female Star DM in '85 from the

DM in '94 as examples I can think of in the top 12.

Well, I wouldn't be so fast to say that...remember, several top 12 corps have
had female DMs (just not this year). I am not sure of the years, so I'm going
to guess, but I think in '91, BD and CBC had female DMs (in fact, they both had
one of each male and female).
Colts 91-92 had a female DM (of course, that was when we were still 20th, so
that seems to fall into the glass ceiling category). Two of the best DMs I
have seen (female or otherwise) recently have been Joy Fuller from Nite Express
and the girl who was DM of the Bandettes in the early 90s ('91 for sure, don't
know what other years).

Cam Kaszas (cameron...@medtronic.com) posted this story on RAMD about
2 years ago. Accoring to him, a plane flew over the stadium in
Birmingham just before Granada Smoothie. The drum major, indicating the
jet, yelled "Make the plane come!" I'd never have deciphered it, as it
was pretty garbled on the recordings (good old jet noise!).
On the other hand, "Vince Lamb! Fire up!" is pretty clear on both the
audio and on the video (at least, on tapes from the original broadcast)
of 1979 North Star. :-)
Vince
C'mon Rich - he got his ring, let him enjoy it.
BTW - I can't think of his name at the moment, although I used to know it,
but the Sky Ryders DM from 81 always completely gassed me out - what a
showman!! (and that sop line pretty much kicked butt, too!! )
Vicki Drummond - Blue Rock 1970-1974
I won't name a worst drum major, but I do recall one drum major's most
embarrassing moment. The Crossman drum major in 1977 would open the show
by tossing (very high) and catching a mace. At finals he tossed,
caught, jumped on the podium while the crowd was still cheering him, and
promptly slipped and fell off all in the span of about five seconds. This
was back when all 12 corps were shown live on national television. 18
years later I can still see it vividly.

Don't for get Ashley (Tappan) Buggey who succeeded Becky as Star DM in '89
& '90. I had the pleasure to get to know Ashley well in '90 when we were both DM's.
She's a great person and had a fantastic presence in her '90 uniform (the

Mike Zapanta of SCV (also 1982)
Milt Allen of Sky Ryders (1981-82)
Greg Hargrove of Sky Ryders (1984...white dinner jacket and all)
As I recall...Phantom Regiment had a lady conductor this year.
What?! No mention of the great James Gulke(sp?). Possibly the
best DM I have ever had the priveledge to watch. I am personally

So, John.....ever march traditional? Ever conduct "eye level"? ;)
The deal with the female DM's was misunderstood: I meant this year
only. And....Phantom may have had a female "guest" conductor, but
I believe she was not listed as one in the credits. (Confirm here?)
I forgot we get an abundence of new people on the Net daily. Those
who would be unfamiliar with my seasonal hit on corps who show
regression in genderland. Just a flame topic I bring up occasionally
to bring my concern over lack of ladies in horn/drum/and DM rankings.
And on another note....for those who felt my choice of Freelancer DM
Chad Humpal was lacking ----- this was an off the top of my head vote
and I thought his enthusiasm was a kick. I can watch subdued and
marvel at the power and control, but give me entertainment to boot
and I'm not only going to get into the show, but remember it. Second
choice (although my pick for this comes from the PBS show) would be
the '80 Madison DM...another crazy guy who totally gave his all during
