Im a fan of simple salutes.Dont dazzle them with a minute long
salute, dazzle them with how good your band is.

Go simple...those long salutes are not only annoying to watch, but say very
little about how good you are as a DM. Nothing more than two or three counts.

KISS....best advice anyone can give you on a salute. Of course, ya probly
shouldn't listen to me. Cuz I'd tell you to give'em the one fingered salute.

Bitter? I'm not bitter.

I was drum major last year too (twas m'second year, laddy), and the salute we
did was rather simple, but had a great effect.

1-2: stay in attention position (arms bent slightly at elbows, hands in fists
at sides)
3: take each arm and hold straight out, then bend into a 90 degree angle and
fold them over each other
4: arms straight out from the sides so you look like a "T"
5-6: salute
7: (first position of order arms) fist up in front of body, arm bent at 90
degree angle
8: attention

Sorry if my directions aren't too clear, but it's a simple and striking
salute....

the most impressive salutes a simple ones that are executed with precision.
my favorite salute out of all the top 12 drum corps last year was Daemon
Williams of Santa Clara Vanguard. the man was so sharp and confident. don't
dazzle them with the style, dazzle them with the execution.

my sophmore year we did a show entitled "A Road to War" and our DM went to a
local costume shop and rented a sword (blunt tip, but rather heavy) for the
entire season (3 months). He did this think where he kinda twirled it around
in the air and then at the end, put it down on the podium (holding it vertical)
and saluted with the other hand. At our last comp he slamed the sword down so
hard, it stuck into the podium (it is wooden) for the entire opener before he
pulled it out.

When Ooeltwah did Jeckall and Hyde last year the drum major's salute was so
small it was virtually non existant.

1) at attention
2)bring your arms up to about 30 degrees
3) back at attention

it was cool. Then the baritone player burst out of the book to play the opening
solo. I loved that show until they left out the last note, and walked off the
field leaving me ungratified.

Everyone seemed to love our dm salute this year. Our show had a western
theme, so, to go along with it, our dms did something original. They
started with their heads down at an angle and slowly raised them up. They
then hiked up their pants, walked several steps (in good-bow-legged cowboy
fashion), took off their hats, and bowed to the audience. Very effective,
though probably not what you were looking for. . . =O)

Well, I've never been a fan for long drum major salutes or anything with
'flashiness'
I've always enjoyed and have been quite impressed with just a regular
military salutes.
I would suggest watching an AirForce recruitment video, or get a poster of
different sort of military groups, they almost always have one of someone
saluting. (They're free from the US gov.) and look at the whole picture,
where their left hand is, where their right hand is, the way their hand is
being held, and EXTREMELY important to look for; the way their feet are
laid.
If you don't like standard salutes, then remember these three pointers
1) Always keep everything clean and executed on counts... If you drag things
or make movements off of a specific beat, it doesn't look nice.
2) Do not employ anything meant to humour your audience or your adjudicator,
humourous things are amusing, but they give you a sign that you're not
serious about the things you do.
Thereby using at *most,* only 4 counts to do your salute.
3) Keep a clear expressionless face at all times. A face that is upset and
cross makes you look as though your struggling, and is also considered by
many to be a lack of confidence. Give yourself a non expressionless lip,
calm eyes, and calm being to make everything look as though it comes
naturally

And bottom line, be original... the only way to *employ* originality is to
BE original, think of your salute from the beginning.

Ah, ah, ah. Watch it... drum major salutes and military salutes are two
entirely different things. There is a SPECIFIC format (?) for each. And they
are not at all identical to the trained eye. I suggest that to learn the proper
basic salute, you get your hands on a George Parks Dynamic Drum Major textbook.
It tells what is and is not acceptable. And military salutes are not acceptable
in most cases if you want to do it properly.

Actually, that's pretty amusing, as every picture in GP's book is wrong. Even
the ones that say they are right.:-) The right hand should be a straight line,
from elbow to finger tips, he bends slightly at the wrist.

Your right. Bent hands on people look like gimps. Both hands should be nice
and stream line. This GP character sounds like a blowhard.

I think the best DM Salute I've seen is Phantom Regiment 1996 - DM Had the most
serious face, did her salute with sharp but simple moves and then bowed and had

yes! Daemon's salute is great not because it is flashy, but because it is
WELL EXECUTED.

that's the key. the execution. not the content.

marching band and drum corps is slowly waning away from it's military
beginnings. the salute is one of the last things left. please do not do a
little dancing, showy salute. the salute is not part of the show, nor is it
really judged. the salute is about showing the audience your band/corps's
attitude.

He has excellent lines, and posture, however he is too tense (I know that
doesn't make sense at first). He shakes and practically falls off the podium
every time he snaps to a new position. ;) The best salute I have ever seen, was
Jonathan Miller's of Glassmen 97. Excellent pacing, movement, and clean lines.

Just to play devil's advocate, though I agree with you, what if the bands'
style *is* silly, and involves dancing? :)

true, true. like i couldn't see a bridgemen drum major doing a strict
military salute. Most "showy" salutes turn out to be really corny, however.
