I'm not a tuba player myself, but I know that a few years ago they
bought beretts (I think that's spelled right) for our tuba player to wear
instead of the regular band hat and he really liked it...

We wore a purple (school color) bandana on our heads.

Our tuba players wear berets, eliminating the falling off problem. (and
making them look like the swedish chef line)

From the parent of a tuba player:

In High School either a beret, no hat, or a bandana coordinating to the
uniform. (Played a convertible tuba)

In college: (Sousaphone) baseball cap (official part of college uniform)

Waaaay back in the 70's and early 80's, my old band, The Band of Gold,
from Largo HS used to attire the sousaphonists thusly: black felt aussies
with gold and white plumes (the rest of the horn line wore shakos) just
like the drum line, what was really goofy were the leopard print tunics
they wore over the gold satin uni-tops.

Well, no offense but they aren't called hats. There are shakos, helmets, and berets. Sorry I'm just a really deducted band kid :\
