I thought maybe someone else would post this sad news, but since I haven't
seen it, I guess I'll be the one.

The two band directors of Corning West High School (NY) were killed last
week (10/4) in a private plane crash in Elmira, NY.

Curt Powell and George Cowburn were apparently flying home from dropping one
of their kids off at college near Buffalo or someplace and crashed as they
were waiting to land in Elmira.

I didn't know Mr. Powell, but have known George for many, many years from my
days in drum corps. He instructed just about every junior corps in the area
- Mello- Dears, Mark Twain Cadets, Barons, etc - and was well known as both
an outstanding drill instructor and drum corps and winter guard judge.

The band program at Corning West was very impressive and has had many years
of success. I can't imagine how this tragic loss will impact those kids, the
school and the community.

My band - Vestal Golden Bears - send our condolences to the band. I think
those kids can use all the support they can get at this time.

Although I never knew either of the directors I find this
to be very sad. I am sure that they will be missed.

What really caught my eye in this posting is that I am
originally from Corning, NY and went to Corning Northside
High School and played in their band. If any of you can
remember far enough back Corning West High School replaced
Corning Northside High School and Painted Post High School
sometime in the late 50's.

I wish the directors family and the kids in the band the
very best.

Where they in anyway involved with the Corning Spectrum?
