Hi all. I was just wondering...

In our circuit, TOB, we send, or are able to send, air grams at
competitions.
If you don't know what air grams are, they are short one or two liners
read
by the announcer as you take the field. Anyway, my question is, are Air
Grams a national thing? or only in TOB. Or do you have something like
air grams called something different?

Just wondering...

Well in Minnesota they read a half page the band writes about their
band, music program, recent awards, music they play, theme, drum
majors, instructors, and misc. Definitely not one-liners.

In CMBC, we have them at competitions as we walk onto the field. Now we
also have them at our football games. Most of them are from parents, but
you get a couple of inside jokes. The hardest part is to keep from
laughing when they announce jokes that pertain to you.

We (Billerica Memorial High School Marching Band (Mass) march in the
EMBA circuit and all the bands do the air-grams. They are a fun way to
say good luck to your kid and their friends in the competition ahead!
We do limit how long they can take to read them so the competition time
is not compromised.

The Pennsylvania Cavalcade of Bands allowed airgrams untill about three
years ago, because, with as many as 100 airgrams before some of the larger
bands, it takes up too much time, and they are hard to hear because of all
the noise in the stadium. I tend to agree with doing away with airgrams
for those reasons, although airgrams can be funny with some of the inside
jokes and/or when the announcer butchers the pronunciation of some names.
As an alternative, Cavalcade has candygrams or flowergrams to be presented
to the students after the performance as an alternative.

We started to limit the number of air gram to about 20. That solved
some of the problems. We also have the candygrams and flowergrams. But
I remember I always loved the airgrams when I marched. If I could hear
them or not. But they helped release a little tension, evern when the
annoucer messed up the name :)

When airgrams delay the competition, as they do at some events, they are
WRONG!

It would be best if they were discontinued.

Afterall, bands can clear the field and the next band get in pretty fast.
