I was all over that, too. Just a matter of time till they dump their "G"
bugles, and become a "Brass Band"!

Tick, tick, tick....the clock is running on the day Cadets dump their "g"
bugles.

Hey, come watch Capital Regiment! We have two valved G bugles!!!!
YAH!!!!
Wow, there used to be a lot more than that. Pascack Valley and Pascack Hills
both used to compete. How about Hasbrouck Heights? Saddle Brook and East
Rutherford competed for a while too, and I believe I saw Secaucus a number of
years ago in competition. Mahwah used to compete as well, for a few years in
the 80's.
In the 60's and 70's, Bergenfield was the top of the county, but never
competed (and I think still holds to that) as such; they did some festivals
like the Herald News and the State Festival, as well as pro football games
each year. Interesting fact: the Casper Troopers famous sunburst drill was
originated, or so I've been told, by the Bergenfield band under Dr. Baggs in
the 50's. Don Angelica, band director of Bergenfield in the 60's (they still
did the burst well into the 70's), went out west to help set up the Troopers
in the early 60's, and brought it with him.

It's hard to tell who is top if they don't compete, or at least do a number
of festivals, sometimes. Years ago Waldwick was also a great band that
competed quite rarely, but they did do the Herald News festival each year, so
I saw them a number of times. Famous for a 'headchoppers' move with the
trumpets. It was their 'trademark' in the 70's.

I judged a marching band show at your HS 10 or 11 years ago, in fact.

As I teach a band in Central Jersey, where I now live, I see North Jersey
bands infrequently, so I've lost track of who is who, outside of the obvious
ones like Ramsey and Ridgewood.
Say hi! to Chris Bernotas for me. Jim Russo played me a comnputer-generated
tape of the Cabs 99 Zorro show music at the EMBA guard/percussion champs (I
judged percussion); sounds like a great show.

The towns in NJ are so close together it's hard to know who is where
sometimes.

No problem.
You are in a GREAT band, BTW. I've seen Ridgewood often over the years,
including last year.
Mike

You're welcome. Bergenfield has been a great band for a looong time, going
back the 50's.

You are carrying on a great tradition.
Good luck in the Cabs this year.
