No Particular order......

Center Grove 1995 and 1997 - The most unique band around. When it comes to
innovation and performance technique, I think Center Grove. 1995 was their BOA
GN winner, but I liked 1997 even more!!

Lawrence Central 1996 and 1997 - 1996's Legend of the Phoenix wasn't exactly a
crowd pleaser, but more of a crowd wower. 1997 was just pure emotional and
musical bliss.

Paoli 1997 - What can I say? They like redoing Cadets of Bergen County stuff,
but one thing makes them unique among all of the Corps rip-off bands....they do
it justice! Best band in Classes D and C hands down.

Homestead 1992, 1996, and 1998 - Loud and Furious. 2nd favorite band moment =
the ending of their 1996 show, complete with unison triplet horn runs and 6
spinning boxes at 190 + bpm. Whoa.

Northrop 1993, 1996, and 1998 - Where to start...well, solid, solid
performances and very nice show ideas. Marching technique = #1. Nice drill by
Greg Cesario in 93 and 96, and by Allison Miller in 98.

Ben Davis 1995 - Crowd Pleaser, Oh My, my favorite moment in marching history =
the big impact of Chain Reaction complete with those guard swirly
things....chills.

North Side 1997 - Very cool show. Shoulda made top 5 in Regionals that year.
Kool drum major outfit and exciting ending.

Greenwood 1995 - Best version of Africa I've seen...well, except for the
anticlimatic ending.

Bishop Dwenger 1998 - Hey, I'm on staff, so there! Great music and hard drill
by Eugene Tuddle.

Carmel 1993 - Most accessable show from them since I've been following marching
band and another original composition from their director, Dick Saucedo.

What is Center Grove doing this year???

RJ,
Center Grove's show is "A study In Contrast" Music by Samuel Barber,
which includes; Adagio for Strings and Medea's Dance of Vegence. I had
the opportunity to see this show at LC in September and I just loved it.
I think CG has the richest, fullest sound I've heard out of a marching
band for along time, they play Adagio for strings so well..if you close
your eyes it sounds like you're listening to an orchestra..Great sounds
from them and the marching didn't look too bad either, the show was not
complete when I saw it, but I'm sure it will be when I see them again,
which I'm looking forward too..Great Job CG..Keep it up!!

both at state and BOA. They made me proud to be an Indiana Band director, I am
looking forward to seeing them this year. I also loved the Carmel show when
they played all the Pat Metheny music, first circle etc. , what a great

I have only been fortunate enough to see one Indiana high school marching
band, AND THAT WAS ON VIDEO! Center Grove 1995 did a fantastic job at
the Bands of America Grand National Championships. Until I actually see
an ISSMA competition I will know how competitive marching band is in
Indiana. I have heard stories of Lawrence Central, Carmel, Ben Davis,
Homestead, and others (even bands in smaller divisions that are supposedly
AWESOME).

Since my memory goes back further than just a couple of years, one of
the best shows ever was Greenwood 1987. Also, Center Grove 1989.
Although I'm live in Cincinnati, I'm from Indiana (and not associated
with any particular band). I've followed the activity since the early
1980s and seen a lot of great shows in all four classes. The Greenwood
& Center Grove shows were performed in the Cincinnati area and are still
remembered by local band fans. That's the sign of a good show. Also,
Northview's "Les Mis" show was one of the best along with Carmel's
championship show. Also, Homestead turned in some great shows when they
placed 2nd is Class B.

And they had the BIG GREY DOT!!!!

I loved the music from LC last year! (Of course, I hated it about a year ago,
but what do you expect? After a bit of time to cool off, I listened to it and
respect their show.) I really am not a fan of Homstead's show from last year.
It had the power, but it wasn't very musical. (I didn't know it at the time.)
Anyhow, LC's music last year was very emotional and well played. Anyhow, here
are my alltime favorites (in no particular order)

Center Grove '95
Homestead '93, '94, '95
Lawrence Central '96, '97
Northrop '96

Just a note on that program - it was my first year being involved with
marching band on any note - as a spectator/parent. I was appalled at
some of the guard costumes that I saw and CG was one of them. I really
don't think it is necessary to dress girls in uniforms that look like
they are spraypainted on and show EVERYTHING to the public. I have not
seen that type of costume this year, thankfully at any of the shows we've
been to. Just a note to any of those who help decide on guard uniforms -
let's please dress our young woman with dignity and respect for all
their shapes and sizes!

I don't think CG's guard costumes were appalling. Form fitting costuming have
been "in" for a while, so they aren't such a shock to me. In fact, CG's guard
outfits always seem to more in taste than most guard costuming, IMHO.

But what's up with the barefooted guard members? There is no sense at all in
this. I'm not saying Center Grove did it, talking about other guards I saw at
district. It adds nothing to the artistry of the guard. Stupid to have guard
standing out there in cold, rainy, muddy, weather with no shoes on. This should
be forbidden. They're not allowed to go barefoot in drum corps, why do we allow
it at ISSMA? I think maybe they need to take a look at this.

>But what's up with the barefooted guard members?

Personally, I think it's easier to move without shoes on...it's more
comfortable. In fact, we all do it at practice.

>It adds nothing to the artistry of the guard.

It's easier for judges to see exactly what the feet are supposed to be doing.
(i.e. pointed, or flexed...)

> They're not allowed to go barefoot in drum corps, why do we allow>it at
ISSMA?

We aren't drum corps! :) No, I seriously think that it's a personal choice
thing. If a director wants their guard to go barefoot, then that's his
decision. I mean, we could say the same thing about sleeveless guard
uniforms..it's cold and rainy...but it's for the show.

**Just my opinion**

I'm not talking about being indoors with a tarp for winter guard, you don't know

No offense but how does that make their uniforms appalling? I thought you were
talking about spandex....

I love ya, LC..I loved the show from 2 years ago. H. Owen Redd's Countless
halls..but you have to get the guard parents to stop screaming when they catch
a flag..it totally disrupts your shows and makes it difficult to enjoy the
music..music should be heard.

Sad. I'm so confused. that's alright, I didn't really want to talk about
spandex anyway.

Hi there - I guess it is really just a matter of common sense. I happen to
teach a color guard and they do perform barefoot when we are inside at the
dome. They would actually prefer to be barefoot at the other shows but safety
considerations and weather prohibit us from doing so.

Herscher is an Illinois band. I am an alumni graduating in 1990. I remember watching that MBOA Summer nationals competition on BETA tape. We watched it so much that the tape started to get worn out.
