... It seemed like a good idea at the time.
I never quite understood what this contest was / was about. Maybe I missed a
key bit of information. Was there an official website with rules and info? I
doubt I could have entered with all else's that's going on, but if I was
lost, others might have been lost too...
--- Mike.
Was this an actual comp then? I always had the impression from your
initial posts that it was just something you were posting for a laugh.
There was never a website, just an announcement post.
I think the main problem was that I assumed more crossover than
actually exists between the IF and FF7 fanbases.
I really should write something myself, instead of trying to get other
people to implement my ideas.
I think nobody really understood what you meant by it though. There's
probably plenty of FF fans here though.

For what it's worth, I think the initial pun it was based on was pretty
funny, and I did enjoy the idea of an "ADVENT Children" game. I think
it maybe just needed a little more time, both in the sense of needing
more time put into setting up the rules, concept, and explanation and
more time in the sense of giving the people who thought about entering
more time to work on their projects. I know I for one was intrigued
but didn't feel I had sufficient time before the deadline to both
refamiliarize myself intimately with ADVENT and write my "child" game.
(Maybe a list of ADVENT entities that could be worth inspiring a work
off of would have been in order?)
I would, however, be interested to know the crossover rate between this
community and other popular gaming communities. (i.e. Final Fantasy,
World of Warcraft, etc.) Given that many people are here primarily from
a literary and not a gaming background, it might give some insight into
where various parts of our community are coming from in their points of
view and desires. I see we already have at least three admitted
Japanese-style RPG fans here. Perhaps a survey to this effect is in
order...

From prior conversations on the IFMud, and the activity on the video games
channel, I think there is quite a bit of crossover. I play console games
quite a bit -- mostly adventure and RPG, and some platformers. I generally
stay away from sports games and driving/racing games.
--- Mike.
I'm a big fan of Japanese-style RPGs (I'm a fan of any kind of game that
emphasizes storytelling over button mashing), though I don't care much
for FF7 in particular (probably more because it ushered in the era of
dumbed-down minigame-fests designed to make RPGs palatable to people who
don't really like RPGs than because of any flaw in the game itself), but
I think this is the first I've heard of this competition. The
announcement doesn't seem to be in my newsreader archives either, so
maybe the post never made it to my newsserver.
