In exchange, they are going to use the UI to highlight they're
capabilities with Silverlight.
They've asked me for a sample game they can use and I thought this
would be a great mini-comp; to invite people to create or adapt an I7
game to our user interface.
The rules would be pretty simple.
1. The game has to be developed in Inform 7/Glulx with FyreVM Support.
2. The game must not violate any copyright restrictions.
3. You would need to work with me directly to hammer out the technical
details:
a. Working with channels.
b. Developing any artwork to conform to the UI and where the
artwork will appear.
c. Developing conversations the way we've done it so that the UI
can manage them.
d. Developing help and hints to work within the UI.
4. You must be willing to see your game shared with the public without
restriction. Tenteo will be putting the sampler on http://www.silverlight.net
and it will contain however many games are ready, including the demo
versions of Jack Toresal and the Secret Letter and Shadow in the
Cathedral.
5. Family oriented content _only_ and the content of your game will be
reviewed thoroughly. This means no profanity, no "adult" situations,
and the artwork needs to be very family-friendly.
6. You are responsible for testing the content. I will host your game
and make it so that you can upload new versions at will and do
integration testing.
I will be the sole arbiter of the winning samples, although because
this would be a partnership, I would be able to direct you so that
your sample would make it no matter what.
If you’re interested, please contact me at my first name at Textfyre
dot com and in the Subject line place “Sampler Mini-Comp”.
I need to talk to Tenteo to find out when they want to start
demonstrating the user interface so I do not have a deadline, but my
guess would be "as soon as possible". Because of the urgency, I would
expect a new game to be on the small, but substantial side or be an
adaptation of an existing game.
Thanks,
David C.
Okay. So that didn't garner any responses. How about this then...if
you're willing to allow your Inform 7 game to be ported to the
Textfyre UI, I will do the work. Same rules apply about copyright and
allowing it to be distributed widely.
Thanks,
David C.
I've found some great sources of free photos on the web, but searching
through thousands of stock photos looking for five or six that will
illustrate your particular story would be a nightmare.

"Fate" is all yours, but I don't think it's family friendly enough for
your purposes.

Victor

Well if anyone is intimidated by the prospect, I assure you that I
will hold your hand
through the whole process and even try to help out with finding
imagery for the UI
for your game. If you have an I7 game, we can very easily set it up to
work in the
Textfyre UI. The channel reworking is minimal if you want a standard
game. It
only gets slightly more complex if we start using the conversation
system, which
is not necessary, or the hints/help system, which is trivial, but also
not necessary.
David
It's not that we don't care, it's just that two to three weeks before
Christmas is a bad time to ask for something with a deadline.
-R
We are. The demo versions of Secret Letter and Shadow in the Cathedral
will appear in the sampler.
I was really just inviting people to join in. It's another way to
promote IF.
David C.
Fair enough. Remove the urgency then.
Samples can be added at anytime. The offer stands. I will help anyone
port or develop a game for the Textfyre UI to be shared publicly.
David C.
Why don't you find a few games you like and hit up their authors for
permission to adapt them to Textfyre? The author gets greater
circulation for their game and you get a few games to demo your
engine.
Then you can put your existing crew on it -- making the graphics and
so on -- and control the process.
Conrad.
ps - Some feedback:
For my part, reading your original posts, I was pretty uncertain what
you were asking for. I know a little about I7, although I'm not an I7
programmer, and yet I don't know and couldn't figure out what-all goes
into making a game for the Textfyre engine. At the Textfyre site
(which I had to Google for) I didn't find anything downloadable that
would allow me to look at the kind of work required... And then you
placed such an emphasis on what wouldn't be acceptable I had a hard
time thinking of IF I've recently played that you'd like.
I'm sure I *have* played such games, but it's just not clear in my
mind what you're looking for, how it would be made, how much work it
be to make, or anything.
But I'm sure that, if you approached a few people, at least some
authors would be cool with you adapting their games. It's actually
something to kinda brag about...
C.
Anyone that has an I7 game that would be interested probably reads
this newsgroup. I think it was easiest to simply post the request here
then go looking for people.
I think I shouldn't have set the urgency so high. There really isn't
any.
David C.
The main requirement is an Inform 7/Glulx game.
Adapting it to FyreVM (http://www.textfyre.com/fyrevm) is not really
that difficult and that's where my help would come in.
Really, the technical aspects of this are _not_ a big deal.
David C.
But not just ANY such game.
I have a COMPLETELY UNSUITABLE one, after all.
Adam
I think we can safely assume Tenteo might not consider
Stiffy as an appropriate sampler.
The UI would of course accomadate it though. (shivver)
