Hi all, just a few words about this year's competition. The deadline is
still September 30th (for now), however, one snafu has occurred. The
betatester FTP site is having problems, so that testing is being delayed
for those authors who have decided to use the official testers. If the
problem causes too much of a delay, then I will extend the deadline to
make sure they are not cheated out of good testing. Anyone who has not
yet submitted their game to the official testers would be well advised to
find their own testers at this late stage. It is unlikely that we could
handle the additional load.
Authors who HAVE submitted materials, don't panic. As I said, if there's
a big problem, I'll extend the deadline.
I look forward to an excellent competition this year. Afterwards, we'll
have to see about a compilation CD or something. :) (Just kidding,
Andrew, don't look at me like that...)

Damn. Go away from the net for a couple of months and this is what you
get.
Maybe next time around we should put the competition right after
thanksgiving? (allow more betatesting, and give people thaksgiving to
finish up the game.)
Typically, right after Thanksgiving is when college finals start. (For US
schools, anyway.)
The deadline for entries is Sept 30, and this was announced April 13,
however. There's been plenty of lead time.

Heh, my finals start on the 16th of Dec, and I'm in a US school
(Of course, they try to ram down all those finals in about 5 days, with
only one reading days)

Not for those of us without a computer at home. (well, not one which
could compile inform). I was only able to work by going to the comp lab
at city college, which was rarely open. And that's also partially why
I'm looking for beta testers now, rather than a couple of monthes ago.
And I thought that the reason for having the end of september deadline was
to allow for freshmen writing enteries. Even though it only took me a couple
of weeks to write what Ive written so far, I'm quickly doubting the
possibility of someone who hasn't learnt inform to be able to learn
it and write a competitive game within their first month of college.
Mine start in December as well. There is sort of a west coast/east coast
schedule for U.S. colleges. For some unknown reason, Berkeley is on the
east coast schedule. But then, my school likes to be different.

Right, more than the freshman issue, that's why I pushed the deadline back
this year. (To Sept 30th.) The betatesting situation is out of my
control, however. Some new greenhorn sysadmin decided to make passwords
expire on the system where the betatesters would go to download the betas.
Since we just ftp to it and never log in, we never received a warning
about it, and since I am on the wrong coast, I can't go in to the school
and wave a student ID to get it fixed. So, Molley the Mage is having to
do that, but first he has to argue for the account's right to exist...blah
blah blah. I think you get the idea.

Nope, see above reason. It would be unreasonable to expect me to invent a
system whereby freshmen could find this newsgroup, learn
Inform/TADS/Whatever, and write a great game in it, all before the
deadline. Considering that it took me 3 months as a freshman to even find
the newsgroup, well, let's just say that the lag would be atrocious.
Anyways, nobody panic. If you must have betatesters and can't find any,
send me email and I'll try to help you out. Yes, even freshmen.
And not everyone celebrates 'Thanksgiving'...
