If you're writing IF on any platform at the moment or plan to in the
near future, could you reply to the post with:
1. Which platform do you primarily use now?
2. Which platforms did you use in the past?
3. Are you likely or unlikely to switch platforms within the next 12
months?
Thanks,
David C.
Platform could have two meanings, so I will answer it both ways.
1. T2 and I6. That is I was converting several shorter I6 WIPs of mine
into T2. Longer WIPs I was keeping I6, because converting would have
been too much hassle. I was doing this partly for easy graphics (glulx
is a bit complicated, HTML isn't) and partly because I found T2 pretty
logical once I finally, after years and years, looked at it. Also
keeping within the z-code memory limits became less and less important
-- to me and others.
2. See above.I6 and previous versions of I5.
3. Yes. To T3 or I7, I simply haven't decided, both have appeal. And,
for me, personally, both also have major problems. But since everyone
else is switching, I imagine I will too. Eventually. Just so I can
continue to have programming q's answered.
Computer-wise:
1. PC.
2. Windows.

I6 and I7. I7 is "easier to use" in many ways, but still I prefer I6
for many things, the main reason being the size of the final works. (I
know these things aren't any big problem nowadays, but still... "El
Archipielago", written in I6 had more than 100 locations, and "El
museo de las consciencias", written in I7, about 30. I needed Z8 for
the first one, and the second one could only compile under Glulx)
> 2. Which platforms did you use in the past?
When I was a kid I used to program small "text adventures" for the ZX
Spectrum with the "Professional Adventure Writing System", by Gilsoft.

I don't think so, but... 12 months are a lot of time, and a lot of
things can happen :)

If I finish my WIP...which might not be likely in that timeframe...the
next one is probably going to be T3.

Windows XP, T3. Switched to T3 first to allow embedded graphics, plus
curly quotes and italics; second to explore its other tools. Dislike the
standard Z-machine's blue screen rather intensely, found Glulx less than
100% stable.
> 2. Which platforms did you use in the past?
Windows since 95, occasional Mac. Started with I6, did some T2 (never
released that project).

Unlikely.
Learning T3 has been (and continues to be) such a major investment of
intellectual effort that the prospect of learning I7, even to satisfy my
very considerable curiosity about its strengths, gives me twitchy fits.

Windows (XP and 2000), both Inform 7 and TADS 3.

I'm likely to stop playing with *both* Inform 7 and TADS 3 at some point and
just choose one. I haven't decided what that one will be yet. (I'm likely to
start using a Mac as well as Windows once "Leopard" with BootCamp comes
out.)

1. I use TADS 3 at the moment. Well, when I'm in a creative mood,
anyhow. It's dandy, by the way. I've given I7 a shot, but mainly out of
curiosity. T3 manages to get the mix between power and usability just
right for me.
2. I used TADS 2 for a bit.
3. Highly unlikely. The time invested into learning TADS 3 was pretty
epic: I'm not likely to do that again unless something truly,
historically brilliant comes along that blows all other authoring
systems out of the water.
1) For what diddling around I do (with grander ambitions probably never
to be realized), I7.
2) I did similar diddling around in TADS, but only ever really made my
way through Eric's excellent _Getting Started_. I've messed around with
PAWS even less (considered reviving it, but not enough time and I'm not
qualified). Ten years ago, in high school, I wrote something unplayable
in qbasic.
3) Probably not. I'm embarking on the ill-conceived path to a PhD this
autumn in a discipline completely unrelated to fiction and to
programming; I imagine my diddling around time will evaporate
completely. In addition, for my computing platforms of choice -- Mac
and Linux -- there just aren't a whole lot of TADS 3 tools. No
debugger; no highlighting editor; no release-making mechanism that I'm
aware of.
On the other hand, as sympathetic as I am to I7's goals, programming
TADS can sometimes seem like a breath of fresh air. It doesn't have
anything quite as good as _Getting Started_ and the _Tour Guide_.
Best,
James

Depends on how far along the game has been developed, and how I'd like
to see it come out.
If I have more time, I might look more closely into TADS 3.

Alan is getting interesting, but I'm going to stick with Inform 7
I always "keep up" with what TADS is doing but have never really used
it.
And since others have said so, I'm using OSX for the foreseeable
future, but I like that with Inform I could switch any time.

I use I6 on Linux. It's the only platform I've ever used. No, I'm
unlikely to switch.
CP
1. Inform 6.
2. A bit of Inform 5.
3. If Inform 6 is extended, then I might switch to that. I dislike
Inform 7 because it seems to lack order and compactness. It also
reminds me unpleasantly of COBOL.
addendum: I assume "platform" means IF language/engine. All of my
development is done on Linux or BSD. I might use MacOS X. I never use
Windows if I can avoid doing so.

TADS 3. The standard library sometimes feels like a thousand-room maze, but
I'm willing to put up with that for T3's power and flexibility. I'm also
more or less fluent in Inform 7, but I tend to treat it more as a toy than
a tool.
> 2. Which platforms did you use in the past?
None. I've dabbled in most of the major ones - T2, I6, Hugo, Adrift - but
never really learnt any of them.

Very unlikely. I went through a period of considering moving from T3 to I7,
but after using both of them more, I'm sticking by T3.

Started with Hugo, then Inform 6. Have tried Inform 7 as well. Also,
some multiple-choice engines for the Amiga.

Not very likely. I'm afraid that my WIP would be very difficult to
implement on any of the other platforms, because it relies so heavily
on dynamically allocated objects.

I think it's interesting to note that everyone (I think) says "no"/
unlikely to question 3.
Perfectly understandable.
Well, both have a rather steep learning curve. While I7 doesn't appear
to for the easy stuff, yes, for the hard stuff, it does.
So after investing all the time necessary to learn the more detailed
ins and outs of one system or the other, people are unlikely to
switch. It's simply a matter of personal allowance of time and sweat-
and-tears. After all most of us work, and this is a hobby.

Inform 7, dabble in TADS 3.
> 2. Which platforms did you use in the past?
Inform 6 and (like most of us, I suspect) BASIC in the childhood days,
although to tell the truth I am just now getting arouund to getting
really serious about writing a polished work of IF.
> 3. Are you likely or unlikely to switch platforms within the next 12

I like many things about TADS 3, , but am having trouble really getting
comfortable with it for some reason, so I'll give that a qualified
maybe. If I ever do something that needs that kind of power, I suppose
I will make the effort to figure the darn thing out.

Not a permanent switch - I wouldn't mind trying to write something in
Inform 7 because some neat things have been introduced for the
developer. But it's just nice having a language down pat so all my
free time can be spent making games instead of learning new
processes.

2. I6, though I never released (or even got close to finishing)

Inform 7, with occasional forays into Inform 6 for library hacking.
I'm holding steady at 4S08 until I get my current WIP finished. I've
used I7 under both Win32 and Linux.
> 2. Which platforms did you use in the past?
Inform 6, mostly; I abandoned it almost entirely when stuff that was
extremely difficult in I6 was trivial in I7. (The core of what is now
the Reactable Quips extension for I7 took something like 2 months in
I6 and less than an hour in I7 -- not counting workarounds for I7
compiler bugs at the time.) TADS 3 was tempting for about three
hours, but the library structure stripped my mental gears the way I7
seems to for a lot of other people.
I6 I used in Windows and Linux; TADS 3 I could not get working in
Linux and so stuck with Windows.
> 3. Are you likely or unlikely to switch platforms within the next 12
> months?
Unlikely, unless you count "source-incompatible versions of I7", in
which case I intend to upgrade it immediately after finishing said
WIP. I do try to experiment with various authoring systems, but
that's because I like languages.
--Michael
> > 2. Which platforms did you use in the past?
I tried Inform 6 for a bit and didn't really take to it. It was a lot of
messing for me as a blind user because there was no really good IDE or
anything - it was all command line bassed.
> > 3. Are you likely or unlikely to switch platforms within the next 12
> > months?
Definitely not. Inform 7 certainly has more appeal to my methods of
working as both programmer and writer. It's logical structures are of
great help E.G, Headings, chapters etc...

Statistics-Collector beware: I'm not planning to release any IF in the
near future. I mainly play with IF-tools because I enjoy playing with
them!
However, because contributing to polls is fun:
> 1. Which platform do you primarily use now?
I7 running on Windows XP, producing Z-Code.
> 2. Which platforms did you use in the past?
In approximate decreasing order of the amount of time spent playing
with them:
I6, RISC OS, Z-Code.
I5, RISC OS, Z-Code.
I6, RISC OS, Glulx.
Trellis, RISC OS.
GTAC, RISC OS.
I6, Windows XP, Z-Code.
I should probably mention the ten minutes spent looking at I2 as
well...
> 3. Are you likely or unlikely to switch platforms within the next 12

To a new platform: Unlikely.
Back to I6-RISC OS-Glulx? Quite likely, but mainly due to the lack of
an I7-RISC OS-Glulx option. ;)

> 3. Are you likely or unlikely to switch platforms within the next 12

Unlikely. I would like to explore TADS 3 more, but probably won't
really dive in unless I find a project in which I really need a lot
of dynamic object creation or something.

Inform 7. But mainly for writing extensions. That may change once I've
finished studying the I7 manual and find some creative inspiration. I
recently came back to IF after a gap of about 6 years -- and I was
hoping to continue with where I left off with I6. But when I went to
the Inform website and found the new I7 and all the amazing changes I
was intrigued, so I decided to give it a shot. I don't regret it. When
I have learnt enough of I7 I might go back to learning I6 so that I
will be able to include I6 in my I7 code.
> 2. Which platforms did you use in the past?
Mostly Inform 6. Before that I did a little bit with Basic and
Javascript.
> 3. Are you likely or unlikely to switch platforms within the next 12
> months?
I'm tempted to learn TADS 3 but I find studying Inform 7 such a huge
investment of time and mental energy I can't see it happening for
quite some time (and not before I have got to grips with Inform 7). So
my answer to the question has to be no.
Michael
1. I7 under Windows.
2. I6 (also under Windows of whichever flavour was in vogue at the time).
3. No plans to switch at present - have looked briefly at the T3
documentation, but it's the writing side of things I struggle with
rather than the programming, and I can struggle with that just as easily
in I7 as T3 (so the T3 class library wouldn't really help me very much).

Same here...
> > 1. Which platform do you primarily use now?
I've looked briefly at Inform 7, and am likely to use it when or if I
finally get around to writing some real IF. (My current project is done
in C++ with the help of the Ogre 3d graphics engine. Though it's
conversation and story based, it has no parser involved and would by
most people not be considered IF.)
> > 2. Which platforms did you use in the past?
Most recently Sludge (an engine for graphical adventure games), though
once again that doesn't really count. With regards to real IF tools,
I've messed about a bit in Inform 6 without any real result. The DM4
suited me well for learning the language.
> > 3. Are you likely or unlikely to switch platforms within the next 12
> > months?
Within the next 12 months? Hopefully, my current project will be done in
that time, and I don't know what will be next after that. Maybe
something new based on the 3d engine I'm now learning. Maybe I'll make a
sequel to the Sludge game I made (I've got some ideas), in which case
I'm likely to use Sludge. Or maybe I'll make my first real work of IF,
in which case I7 is the likely choice. I like what I've seen.
I guess that's one more person unlikely to change (in the given time
period). I'd like to take a closer look at Tads 3 some time too, but
time is not something that I have too much of.
