Well, I'm not yet quite convinced, but I find myself increasingly of
the opinion that the natural way to write a graphical user
interface is with a graphical user interface.
To that end, I've gone and fixed the one thing that I always thought
made GWindows a bear to use.
GBuilder is a graphical tool for designing user interface layouts in
Glulx using the GWindows library. Now, with just a few clicks, you
can build as complex a screen layout as you like, then export inform
source code to generate that layout.
Now, you can experiment with different layouts and see their results
instantly. Arrange and rearrange windows, see what happens and how
the pieces all fit together. No longer do you have to recompile over
and over until you get things the way you want. And because GBuilder
builds its code from exactly what is on the screen, it can't generate
a broken or impossible layout.
Best of all, GBuilder is written entirely in Glulx and GWindows -- so
you don't need to worry about whether or not your interface will look
quite right: it'll look exactly like what you see in the builder
(well, more or less). You can design your UI and test its portability
all at the same time.
Comments would be greatly appreciated on this public beta of GBuilder,
and I hope you find it useful.
