So how does the new Evil Dead stack up to the original?

I haven't seen it yet, but some friends who have have enjoyed it. It
lacks the slapstick humor of the original and goes for pure terror, as I
hear. I plan to see it on my next day off (which isn't today, FML).

I may have been misinformed. I just read Entertainment Weekly's review,
and they call it the "most slapsticky" horror movie since the original.
They give it a B+. It's very rare they give a horror movie an A.

I'm sticking with my position that the first EVIL DEAD film was not
meant to be comedic or slapstick. It may look that way today due to its
low budget and being rough around the edges.

I totally agree. Sam Raimi's budget was indeed very small, so they
could not afford to use realistic gore effects in all scenes.
It is pure horror, though.

Seconded, I watched it for the first time a long time after it was
released, but it always read to me more of "low budget horror film" than
"slapstick" comedy. And honestly, I am not sure how you would come to
that conclusion anyway.
