hello
For a good while now I've been looking for a painting which I saw on a
documentary about Monet's Impression: Sunrise. The show aired on
British television a few years ago; it focussed on the influence
Monet's painting had on art and they also had a professional artist
'recreate' the experience Monet had in the forty minutes he took to
make the painting (just so you could see an artist at work - the guy
did his version of 'impression' of Impression: Sunrise). At one point
they named and displayed a few paintings rumoured/considered/known to
have been inspirations for Monet in that particular work. They were
similar scenes by earlier artists.

One of them I particularly liked
it looked from an earlier century
it looked out from a stone jetty into the sea, with the sun glaring
towards you
the colours were vivid, the style solid and precise
i think there might be detailed archetectural features on the stonework
that's all I can remember

Anyone have any idea what i'm talking about?

You might want to look through some of Turner's work, which had a strong
influence, and see if you recognize what you are looking for:

(e.g. "Colour Beginning", "Burning of the House of Lords", "Sun Setting over
a Lake", "San Giorgio Maggiore", etc); though perhaps these are a little
less precise than what you are looking for.

Let us know what you find.
Cheers;

Those ones you named aren't much like what I'm thinking of - but the
first painting listed on artchive, Dido Building Carthage, isn't far
off the mark. Conceivably it IS the one I saw. The sun's in the right
position and the archetecture is familiar, though I remember open sea
rather than river, and don't remember any trees. Of course maybe I only
saw a detail of the full picture in the documentary. Hmm. Thanks for
your help
