A critic used the word "Impressionism" an a 1874 exhibition, to --------make
fun of all the works in the show---------.

The word *baroque *comes from the Portuguese word meaning "----irregularly
shaped--------- pearl." It was first used in the 17th century to describe
something that ----------did not meet the classical standards of the
Renaissance----------.

The name "Cubism" comes from ----------an insult--------- by another artist,
Henri Matisse. He called a painting by Georges Braque: "petits cubes", or
little cubes.

Futurism called for the destruction of institutions such as libraries and
-------museums-------.

Italian Renaissance scholars named Gothic art "Gothic" because they thought it
was --------barbaric and uncivilized--------- like the Goths who invaded Italy
in the
400s.

Did I mention DaDa? (made by painter haters)

In all seriousness, it's interesting to see how the species of naked monkeys
turned what should have been a passing fad, into a monumental and significant
art period.

You're right - that's how truth works. At first, a fit of hysteric laughter
sets in. Shock and shame follows shortly after.

Imagine... all those years... you thought "Impressionism, Baroque, Gothic Art,
Dada, Cubism, and Futurism" were --real-- art movements.

Bwaaah ha ha haaaaaaaa!!

ME? I've always thought the only "real" art
movement was to be found in those gadgets
that I hear referred to as "mobiles" and
their kindred "wind sculptures."

Har d' har har, harrrrumph!!

Mobiles, as an art form, were invented by Alexander Calder.

But this does not really mean that all the painters who exhibited in
that show belonged together, or that their technique was
insignificant.

This point seems out of place.

Why didn't you do your homework on this, that it was invented by
Tristan Zara?

But the names for things often do not come from their inventors or
practitioners but from public whimsy or from journalists. Herb Caen
the columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle invented the term hippy
and possibly Beatnik, yet these were both significant social and
artistic movements.

Let's look at the labels on art movements you may respect. How about
classicism, the Pre-Raphaelites.

Why should Gothic art, regardless what we call it, be a passing fad?

Nobody will respect your opinions if you are inconsistent, or if your
opinions are not deeply based in reason and signicant rather than
trivial facts.

Duchamp coined the term in 1931. Calder's works up to that time were
motorized sculptures. The Russian Constructivists, notibly Naum Gabo,
were the ones Duchamp was talking about: "Hanging articulated
sculptures." Gabo's idea was sculpture that changed shape without
changing meaning.
