Hi again people :)
I've been getting a constant, but trickling response to my initial proposal,
so I thought I'd reorganize my thoughts and let you all know the current state
of the collaborative self-portrait mail art project I mentioned about a week ago
As it stands, I have somewhere around ten people who've expressed interest, and
that's enough for me to consider it worthwhile. I would very much like to
expand the group, however, so please read on and join us!
The project:
It is an art chain project, centering around the self portrait, and the
idea of one's image of oneself. Each participant will write a verbal
description of himself (you may substitute herself at any point here, of course)
This description will be mailed (or emailed) to the next person on the listn
(I will organize the list, and see to it that each person has a partner and so
on) The recipient of the description will create a portrait out of that
verbal image presented by the portraitee. This portrait may be executed
in any medium, including those which are not exclusively visual, poetry for
example. The only requirements on the portrait is that they be a physical
object, which is interpreted to be a portrait by its artist, and that it be
able to be xeroxed for documentation, and that it can be sent through the
mail to its subject. If the participants all agree, the artist will make a
color xerox of his/her portrait before they mail it to its subject, this xerox
will be sent to me for documentation purposes. When the documentation is mailed
each participant will recieve a color xerox of a piece they have not seen in
addition to the b+w documentation of the entire project.
When the portrait is recieved by its subject (participant #1, #2 made it...),
#1 will write a verbal response/reaction/critique of the piece, specifically
referring to the portrayal of himself within this portrait (which is to a
certain degree a self-portrait). This response will be sent back to the
creator of the portrait. Both the initial description and the reaction will
also be sent to me for inclusion in the documentation.
I see the textual parts of this project taking place via email, and the
portraits themselves travelling snailmail, as they will be physical objects.
I have settled on the portrait theme for this project. If there is sufficient
interest, I will certainly be organizing similar projects, and will be
open to suggestions, and so forth.
So please, people, you've just GOT to participate! This is exciting! I promise!
:)
I look forward to hearing from all of you!
