Subject: Change in date for Computing and Arts Conference

The Computing and the Arts Conference at VCU has run into a snag
caused by the layoffs at Apple Computing (one of the conference
sponsors). Our marketing rep was one of the folks that Apple let go
and it has taken us several weeks to reorganize without her. We
plan to meet next tuesday to set a new date (probably December or
January). Once we have more information and more details, I will
send them on to you.

High Technology Art as Modern Art

[This paper was presented as a speech at the 1st International
Biennale in Nagoya, ARTEC '89, 6 July 1989.]

In trying to determine the exact place of High Technology Art on
the contemporary scene, the author attempts first of all to
establish the fact that there exists a certain coherence both on a
technical and an aesthetic level between such different art forms
as Light Art (luminokinetic and neon light art), Laser and
Holographic Art, Video and Computer Art. The examples he uses are
mainly European since the American and Japanese sectors were
covered by other speakers at the symposium. He emphasises
significant exhibitions and manifestations rather than individual
artists' research work so that he can better assess the role of
Technological Art in given historic and social situations. The
author then briefly alludes to other contemporary art developments
as well as to areas considered more marginal to Art, such as
industrial and interior design. He then tries to establish the
importance of High Technology Art or Technoscience Art as a valid
expression of our time, particularly regarding the discussion on
modernism and post-modernism, which is one of the main theoretical
issues at the moment.

Don Herbison-Evans, "Attempts in the Arts to Capture the Fleeting
Moment of Dance". Address: Department of Computer Science, Madsen
Building F09, University of Sydney, N.S.W., AUSTRALIA 2006.

The perception of the fleeting moment of dance may be considered
from the viewpoint of each of the other arts: the visual arts,
music and literature. The fleeting moments are classified into
four categories according to the first and second derivatives of
the movement: into posing, suspended, gliding and transitional
movements. The various elements of visual design, their qualities,
and organisation into structures are discussed. It is shown how
these can be applied to the first three of the various categories
of fleeting moments in dance. The roles of repetition as used in
music, and meaning as used in literature are also discussed, as
they assist a viewer in remembering a fleeting moment in dance.
