Hi everyone. My FIRST time here. I do pastel art. Lately I have
been looking for PASTEL BOARDS in the catalogues without any success.
I like to work with pastels at my eisel. I have been using regular
supplies such as Sennelier and Archival sanded pastel paper. Well, I
have been taping the pastel paper onto a matting board so I can stand it
up on the eisel. This way I can see what and how I am doing much
better, and the pastel shavings that don't stick, fall off and don't
have be shaken away. My question to any artist that uses pastel is, if
there's such a thing as PASTEL BOARD? If you have information about it,
I would like to know who sells it. Thanks.

Adele

There is a relatively new product, available in most major art supply retailers
that makes a rigid pastelboard. I forget the name of the vender, but they also
make a gessoboard, clayboard and masoniteboard. You can find it in the canvas
aisle. I haven't used it yet, but if you're looking for a rigid support
you'll like it. You can use water on it too, which is a feature that I really
like. Museum board is also is another option. It accepts gesso, marble dust,
acrylic and very durable. Then there is canvas board. Hope this helps.

There are pastel boards, but there are also museum boards which
have a good tooth.

Museum board, by Rising, comes in 2 ply, 4 ply etc. and is used
for archival framing. For pastel painting, 2 ply is sufficient.
If you buy a large 40" x 60" and cut it down, you can save a fortune
against buying the boards designated as "pastel board" A large
sheet of museum board is around $5.00, maybe more, since prices
keep rising. Yes, that's the brand name too, Rising.

I love doing pastels as well...and I'm looking for firmer surfaces myself.
I want to experiment washing pastel pigments with turps as an
underpainting. Some of my reading in prep for this...involves mixing a
"pumice" powder over wet gesso on a board, such as masonite.

I haven't done one yet...kinda taking my time, but wish to get at it soon
enough. I tried unsuccessfully to find pumice thusfar, but I guess its more
likely to be available at hardware stores. At any rate.....many pastelists
are utilizing methods such as this. Hope this gives you some direction to
steer.

Golden Paints I believe makes a 'pastel ground', that is toothy and can be

Ampersand makes a pastel board. They can be purchased through
most art supply stores.
