hey everyone, does anybody know of a really great book on oil painting
that shows you how to realistically render objects (like wood and
metal) and/or landscapes realistically. I'm a fairly adept oil
painter, and all I ever find when I look are books filled with
impressionist landscapes, etc. which are cool if you like that but not
what I'm looking for. Anyone have any ideas?

Why not just do a search on Amazon for Trompe L'Oeil? Many books will
be searchable, so you can see what a few pages look like at least.

Most Trompe L'Oeil books I've seen aren't specific enough to be
useful. The best book I have found is called "The Handbook of Painted
Decoration" by Yannick Guegan and Roger LePuil. It's expensive, $75,
but worth the investment. It's really a Trompe L'oeil painting book
showing very detailed techniques for ALL kinds of wood not just
"wood", and ALL kinds of stone not just "marble". I bought the book at
Borders so you might want to see if you can find it there and
determine if it meets your needs. Then buy it used on Amazon. It
doesn't have much for metal but there is also a very good website with
photgraphs of every imaginable texture. The images are free to
download at: http://mayang.com/textures/

Hope that helps.
