If we're talking about the plastic arts, I would say it
would be anything that came after, and was outside the
framework of "high Modernism." I think the term began to be
used in that sphere in the 1970s, basically to describe a
phenomenon of non-abstract-expressionist works fetching high
prices. That's why I mentioned Warhol, who seems to have
led the charge.
It has another meaning in lit and cult-crit (if you ask me).
