Who is your favorite LIVING artist?

Don't hesitate if they're obscure. Most artists don't get
national/interntional recognition until after they're dead. But it will be
interesting to see if there is ANY agreement/consensus on LIVING/working
artists.

Mine would include David Bates, Jerry Surls, Ann Stautberg, Dale Chihuly,
Benini....

Also, (really obscure) emerging artists Terry <T.Bouch.> Bouchillon (OKC),
Steve Kimball (LA)

Don't think 2 hard/long about it... these are off the top of my head.
Anyone even heard of any of these artists? Or, do we ONLY consider
artists/RE: their contribution after they're dead?

In the process, I also thought of a number of recently-deceased favs...
Keith Haring, Sean Earley, Richard Avedon....

I'd have to say Cy Twombly. DeKooning is alive but a victim of
Alzheimer's disease.

Recently-deceased! sounds fun, could start up a top ten of recently-
deceased favorites, what would the 'recently' time span be?.

I will add to this top ten Helen Chadwick (UK), who died last year.

Are we talking about the same Benini... Italian artist who founded
TheArtFoundation in Hot Springs, Arkansas?
If so... why? I know nothing but GOOD things about him as artist AND his
efforts to support fellow artists/gallery owners.

Marta Kremer who lives around Buckhannon, WV is my favorite LIVING
artist.
Her work has a different kind of uniqueness like Georgia
O'Keefe's. One day her work will be quite valuable.
Sometimes she does the Cedar Lakes Arts and Crafts Fair near Ripley, WV.
This is the creme de la creme of WV artists.
I have three small paintings/drawings and bought one for a friend.
Her work is unmistakeable.
Sincerely, Jane in South Charleston, WV.

Yes William, I agree with you Don Van Vliet.
Although I've only seen his abstract work in publications. I've not
yet been lucky enough to see his paintings in a gallery & unless they
come over to England I probably never will!
I remember him better as the great Captain Beefheart & his Magic
Band. I saw him twice & own all of his recordings; his music was very surreal.

I mention him on my home page www.users.zetnet.co.uk/wfurlong/gaynor1.htm

Regards, Gaynor

My favourite artist is Sharron Lea-Owens, Fahima Rashid and Camille
Ormston come closely second, they are all friends of mine. Camille's work and
that of Fahima can be seen at the Laing Galley, Newcastle upon Tyne until the
end of February. Sharron facilitated the work by these and eight other
unemployed people, the work can be seen (as 72dpi jpegs) at

Instead of my favorite living artist, how about a living artist I would
like to know more about.
Does anyone(hopefully a couple of someones) have any information on Anne
Truitt?
Is she a sculptor? What are some of her theories, her methodoligy?
I have heard that she has a diary-form book published, has anyone read
it?
She has piqued my interest, but I am having a difficult time finding out
information on her and her art.
I do know that she is a professor-in-hiding (professor emerita) at
University of Maryland College Park, but during my studies there, no-one
ever spoke of her, I and my friends never saw her or any remnants of her
art around campus.I am even unable to find her book at any of the local
book stores .
I would be interested in any information you could pass along.
As a side note, Does anyone care to comment on the merits of university
degrees vs.art school degrees? Is it the name and the attitude of the
program or the attiude and the aptitude of the student that really
matters in the end?
( this is my first post, so pardon any newsgroup fauxpas)
