old painting restoration?

I have an old painting on canvas that is badly cracked and the canvas is
very brown and dry. It looks like an oil but the paint is soluble in
isopropyl alcohol? So I wondered if it could be tempera? or what? Ideas
on restoration would be gratefully received.
I cannot afford commercial restoration, i am an artist and would like to
tackle this myself.
