I am interacting with this group for the first time.
I do water color painting (at an amateur level) and want
to learn oil painting. Do not know anything about the subject now.
With this background info. can anyone suggest me good books
on the subject.... that will give some basic information on
the paint, brushes, medium and canvas, techniques.. etc.
Any suggestion on getting started will help!
Thanks in advance.

You might like Charles Sovek's "Oil Painting, Develop Your Natural Ability".
It covers the basic of the paint, the surfaces, etc, but also gives you an
idea of how to think in terms of blocks of color. I found this a very good
book when going from watercolor to oils.

There are Sooooo many 'good' books on 'How To' out there,
and everyone has their own personal favorite. But there
is a definite consensus that the 'Bible' for painters is
the book titled THE ARTIST'S HANDBOOK by Ralph Mayer. Be
careful, because I know of other books with similar titles
NOT by Mayer. You won't learn how to paint from Mayer, but
you will find it an invaluable learning aid once you begin
teaching yourself. I will refrain from offering any of the
titles in my library -- and suggest that you just see what
is available in your local library and book stores. The one
that becomes your favorite will be the one that suits the
needs of the moment for you. Good Luck, T'bird.

Hiya, Uma --

This is one I've used with some good results
('individual mileage may vary' disclaimer here):

Learning from the Old Masters, by Joseph Sheppard
pub. Watson-Guptill, 1979
ISBN: 0-273-01348-3

Also covers masters' techniques. Good luck!!

My background was also in watercolor before I attempted oil painting
(within the past year). I found a very helpful little book (with a
somewhat off-putting title, I thought): Oil Painting for the Serious
Beginner by Steve Allrich. Give it a look.
