Does anyone know where I can find a metal water color sketch box that will
allow me to add my selection of tube colors to the paint wells, has spaces
for a few tubes of paint, contains a mixing well and one side of the lid to
serve as a palette? I have seen pics of such palettes in books, but none of
them tell where they can be purchased. I found a few on the net, but the
cheapest was $281.00 and used pan colors. Bummer!

You wouldn't be able to squeeze pigment from a tube into the well without it
oozing out and also drying out. I think the boxes you're looking at are
designed for pan pigments. There's no reason why you couldn't put tube
pigments in the wells if you were willing to live with the consequences, I
suppose.

Aunty had a bad experience dealing with Jerry's Artarama mail order a few
years ago, but I have seen less expensive metal watercolor boxes in their
catalog (no catalog at hand; sorry). If you're reasonably careful, the
folding plastic palettes work pretty well. I have never broken one.

Cheers,

AS
