Great site! Well done. Fast loading - clear - neat. And isn't Newcastle a
fantastic place for artists? I was at the Baltic Mills this week (my mother
lives in Hexham) and when it stops being a *fair ground* (shuffling tourists
around) then I hope the profile of the gallery will enhance the reputation of
Newcastle as a contender for London. I'd move up here in a flash (if I could
get used to the damn weather ;-)
I don't know if Paul Bloomsfield will remember me - he was in his first year
when I was in the third at Manchester. Say Hi if he does!
Best wishes

Hi
Thanks for that, I will mention it to Paul as I will most likely see
him at the MFA Show at Newcastle University on the 4th Sept.
What did you think of the Baltic then? it has certainly contributed to
a resurgence in the arts in Newcastle. Its quite an impressive
building which I think is helping to attract the visitors just as much
as the art at the moment.
Newcastle & Gateshead are currently bidding for the Capital of Culture
in 2008 so there has never been a better time to be involved with the
arts up here as there is quite a bit of interest and money floating
about.
I don't know if you know the Waygood gallery in Newcastle but they
have recently been given quite a bit of money to expand the gallery
and Northumbria University gallery is also having an extension built.
It is good to hear graduating artists talking about staying up here
now instead of in the past when everyone wanted to go down to London.
As for the Baltic and all the tourists I think the winters up here
will sort them out :o)
Regards
I wish I could have been at the show. Usually I go to the Newcastle University
degree shows and always enjoy them - usually more than London shows. Our own
MA show at Kent Institute of Art and Design (Canterbury) opens on 7th Sept so I
will be back helping with that and learning for next year!

I think it is fantastic! Really really good for Newcastle's art scene. And the
Laing Gallery has got its act together too now. I've seen some good shows
there. The Baltic Mills building is superb - and so is the Millennium bridge -
the bridge puts London to shame. I think this is the link for anyone
interested:

But the work they are showing at the moment is so obviously geared to pacify
the locals. It drove me to swearing ;-) I'm really looking forward to seeing
some decent work later on in the year ... and for the cafes to sort themselves
out so you can get a cup of coffee without falling asleep ;-)

So I noticed - and I am willing it to happen!

I haven't heard of the Waygood - or is that the Northumbria gallery? I'm going
back to London in the morning and should be up here again in October so will
check it out. I hope you have some decent studio groups up there? If not,
start one! have you thought about bringing your degree show to London? I
highly recommend the Nunnery Gallery http://www.bowarts.com if you want a
decent venue.
Good luck!

This is the correct link for the Baltic you were almost correct, it's
not the best web site I've seen though http://www.balticmill.com/
I agree about the Millennium Bridge it really is very impressive it is
one of those things you have to see for yourself as photos do not do
it justice at all, and if you go on a windy day it has nice bouncy
feel about it :o).

I think they are very aware of getting the local population on their
side first as this is something very new up here and then with a bit
of luck the exciting shows will begin to arrive.

I graduated from the mfa last year, so this year I can relax and enjoy
the show without all the grief of watching normally sane people fall
to pieces trying to set up their shows, its times like that when I am
pleased that I like to obsessively plan things out.
Studio spaces are still somewhat in short supply up here, consequently
they are very much in demand, fortunately I am in close contact with
the organisers of a proposed new development which will incorporate
studio's gallery space and workshops. These along with the other
already established studio groups ought to generate more opportunities
for artists to exhibit their work.
Don't think the Waygood has a web page yet but here is the one for
Northumbria gallery its not the best gallery as you will see but my
reason for mentioning it was that at least money is now being spent on
the arts up here.
