I've seen texture Gel (sand) by Liquitex, but it seems to transluscent.
Does anyone have a recipe for Modeling paste, or Gesso?
I'm working with Paint Sticks and oil Pastels, as well as soft pastels
with Wingel.
Thanks!

IF you are referring to ACRYLIC mediums, they are basically all the
same base with modifiers to make them thicker/thinner. Gesso is
going to contain white pigment -- usually titanium white. If your need
is for a "tooth" in dry coating, then sounds like the "sand gel" is what
you need. You can experiment making your own using clear gel or
modeling paste and adding silica or other pigments commonly available
from a ceramics supplier. Silica can also be found at other commercial
suppliers in different coarsenesses. I regularly use a black iron oxide
for priming canvas when I want to start with an intense black ground.
The iron oxide has a definite "tooth" than can be exploited for pastel
work too. I would use a clear acrylic VARNISH rather than the thicker
pastes or gels if I were interested in exploiting the toothiness.

Howdy ole fan/friend,
Thanks !!!
Been camping on the flanks of Mt. Adams in Washington state.
High and dry lately, with lots of dust from Mt. St. Helen's ashes
still blowing in the wind. But soul food nonetheless. Glorious sunsets
on that snow-capped peak's omnipresence! Should make super
subject matter for a whole rack of great "sofa art." Realized I took
one whole roll of 400ASA film with camera set at 200ASA. Along
with my high-altitude sunburn, I overexposed in both instances.

This might be a good spot to have a summer vacation show and tell . . .
I saw the new Museum of Contempory Art in Chicago recently (before it was
featured in the current issue of Art in America.) Loved the 'white box'
look and wish it were in my neighborhood. The opening show was well
presented, the collection is promising, saw a bunch of not-so-old
favorites and this small town artist loved every bit of it. (sigh...) I
just don't get out enough.

Does the MCA have a website???

If you want to make a thick textured surface, the Gesso will shrink
when it dries if applied too thickly. The modeling paste and texture gels
are made for doing what you want. I use the different texture gels from
Golden. You can get them from Dick Blick catalog.
