Hey all,

I'm sort of decloaking for a while to ask if anyone has particular episodes of
"Iron Chef" they consider "Best Battles". I've recently discovered Iron Chef
(mm...a couple months ago?) on FoodTV and have seen six or seven battles since,
including the New York Battle. Since my parents aren't exactly wild about it, I
can't turn it on just any old time, and I'm wondering what battles I should
make sure to see.

Double points if the main ingredient isn't meat. ;-) I'm a vegetarian (not
vegan) and might like to prepare a dish or two I see on Iron Chef. This is not
to say I dislike the taste of meat - just last week, due to a situation with
some out of town guests, I ate chicken at a restaurant and enjoyed it very much
- I just don't keep it around or prepare meals with it.

Oh, and just for the record, my favorite battle so far must be Porcini Battle.
Bring on the special cooking effects! ;-) The Lobster Battle with Sakai and the
chef from California was quite good too.

I feel profoundly pleased I missed Octopus Battle. ;-)

I saw this one. It was excellent wasn't it? We should damn well get the
Iron Chef in the UK too. And if we do, and I'm missing it, someone
should tell me where. Like

I plan on campaigning for two things from the BBC

1. Buy Iron Chef to replace Ready,Steady, Cook.
2. Release The Horns Of Nimon on video.

Let's face it, 1 is more likely to happen :)

So what's the consensus on the Iron Chef newsgroup about Pertwee vs. McCoy?

LOL, I don't know! But there was a recent agreement that Jon Pertwee would've
been great as a replacement for Kaga, should he ever want to go on vacation.

Hmm, classic Iron Chef battles where the theme ingredient is not meat...

1. Yogurt Battle. One of Chen's finest hours.
2. Mango Battle. The uncrowned Iron Chef Mexican faces Kobe.
3. Bamboo Shoot (Boy's Festival) battle. Morimoto at his wierdest.
4. Peach Battle. The storyline overpowers the cooking spectacularly
(feat. Sakai). And the BDJ is completely insane.
5. "Chinese Cabbage" Battle (bok choy). Chen's skills are dazzling.

I think the other consensus was that Chen IS Pat Troughton. "[clap] now,
what's this ingredient, eh? What?! Yogurt! Oh no! Oh dear! I-I-I wasn't

There's an Iron Chef newsgroup?!?!?!

I typed in www.ironchef.com for a laugh and was pleasantly surprised to
find a pretty comprehensive fan-site. Even better (when it's finished) is
the
official site www.ironchef-fujitv.com . You probably already know about
these, but I provide them as a service for those, like me, who are dying to
see Iron Chef in the UK.

There is indeed: alt.tv.iron-chef

Rather fewer threads than here, but certainly more consistent quality of
postings.

I've heard of Yogurt Battle before. I'd love to see that. Unfortunately I
missed Bok Choy Battle last week. ;-/ Too bad about Iron Chef Mexican...I've
consistently thought there should be one.

The best battles have been -
Battle Octopus (wow!)
Battle Squid (One attacked Sakai!)
Battle Porcini Mushroom (The hazmat suit of death!)
Battle Tofu (Morimoto really is great)
Battle Natto (Morimoto using Coca-cola on beans!)
Battle Shanghai Cabbage
Battle Rice
Battle Mango (Kaga shines)
Battle Peach (this was amazing!)
Battle Lobster (Sakai versus Ron!)

Well tofu, porcini, natto, cabbage, rice, mango, and peach
are obviously not meat. There are many great battles for the
vegetarian viewer.

Porcini was AMAZING!
And hilarious!

Ron Stiegel
Yes, one of the classics!

LOL!
Everyone but me was really digusted by that one I think.

Who would win?
Morimoto or Ainsley Harriot?

Actually to be honest I think McCoy is more popular on the Iron Chef group
even though there are some outspoken Pertwee fans

Yes there was a long touching thread about Jon Pertwee very recently.
People talking about how they knew Jon personally and he would have loved
being Kaga

Yes there's no question of it!
Chen IS the 2nd Doctor!

Kids Plate USA!

I thought the BDJ was going to molest poor Sakai!

Yes!

What battle saw the iron chef face the young food critic with his mom in
the royal box watching on. He made her famous beef stew

Glad you asked. It seems clear that in alt.tv.iron-chef we are pretty much
of one mind on this issue:

Pertwee would have made a GREAT Kaga stand-in. McCoy? Are you kidding me?
Remember how silly he looked in the Pertwee get-up in TIME AND THE RANI?

McCoy -- maybe a judge. That's about it, I should think.

If you're a REAL fan of Iron Chef, you'll be wanting to boycott the
Fuji-TV one. They tried to shut down all the fan sites and also tried to
force IronSteph into giving up the ironchef.com domain. They may produce a
wonderful TV show, but they are NOT NICE PEOPLE.

Go to www.ironchef.com instead. It's a better site, to boot!

The site they have up presently (fuji-tv, that is) is also an amateurish,
poorly-done and mostly uninformative load of FrontPage-generated tripe.

No no no, he's Kobe. Haven't you noticed how often the challengers'
equipment mysteriously breaks down during battles with Kobe? He's secretly
undermining his enemies, I tell ya! He's more, much more than a chef!
