THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - November 19, 2003

Doctor Who's 40th anniversary is here. A few brief notes before going into
the full schedules.

BBC1, BBC2, CBBC, and BBC Prime will be airing a Blue Peter episode focusing
on Doctor Who's 40th anniversary over the next week or so. BBC1 and BBC
Prime will also be carrying the annual Children In Need fundraiser, which
will include a Dead Ringers produced event - Doctor Who meets The Weakest
Link gameshow. That will air in either the 8PM or 11PM GMT half-hour
depending on which listings source you believe. The telethon airs all
evening.

The UK Gold schedules are tentative. After weeks where no detailed info for
the anniversary weekend was available (apart from one rumored schedule that
turned out to be wrong), variants of a final schedule have come out. No two
variants seem to agree, as there are slight differences in start times
between them. The big details - Planet Of Fire, The Five Doctors, and the
Doctor Who TV Movie are not airing, though they were mentioned before. The
Two Doctors *is* airing. The Curse Of Fatal Death is airing on both days,
probably in 4 parts. And when dealing with marathons like this you have to
assume that shows could start early or late. For the column I am using the
start times from the UK Gold website, but assuming that Curse Of Fatal Death
will be 4 parts and putting the 4th part in the appropriate spot, while UK
Gold's website only notes 3 episodes for Fatal Death on either day. UK Gold
is planning to run a number of specially produced features. I am guessing
that those features will run in the 5 to 15 minute blocks where UK Gold has
no specific information, and have labeled those sections "Short Feature".

UKTV Australia will not air a Doctor Who special at 8:30PM on 23 November as
originally indicated. Their 40th anniversary programming will end with the
22 November programmes, which seem to be the end of their current Who run.

The radio National Service in New Zealand will air the Doctor Who audio
story "Slipback" over the next 6 Sundays at 4:50PM, starting on 23 November.
There does not appear to be a way to listen to this service online, so it'll
be a New Zealand only situation. The rest of the world can still listen to
Slipback edited into 3 episodes on BBC7 over the next 3 Saturdays.

Looking ahead to December, KBTC/KCKA Tacoma/Centralia, WA
http://www.kbtc.org will be celebrating Doctor Who's 40th anniversary with a
marathon on December 6. Iowa Public TV http://www.iptv.org is indicating on
their website that they will have a Friday pledge night for Doctor Who on
December 5. And there's "The Story Of Doctor Who", BBC One's 40th
anniversary Who documentary which does *not* have a scheduled air date yet.
I keep seeing people in online forums asking when the special will air. If
the schedulers at BBC One had decided when the special would air yet, they'd
have announced it already. We'll all know soon enough.
