Am I correct with the date for the first Dr Who show, am I a day out?

I do also recall that that evening (the 22nd) both chanels(?) stoped their
usual programmes and just had serious music

No, that was the previous year, 1962.

Yes. ISTR that the episode of Step and Son which was due to be shown was
postponed.

Oops! Somehow a toe got amputated. :) It should have read "Steptoe and
Son".
