Yes, I'm sticking in my spoon to stir the old soup...

I've been thinking... what stops the Ainley Master from having two hearts?
Could Trakenites have two as well? I'm in the process of writing a fanfic
set during Castrovalva, and started thinking of this again. IMO, it would be
reasonable if the Master had went to Traken in search of a fitting body as
well as the Source's power.

If we *don't* count Mark of The Rani as proof that he has two hearts, what
evidence do we have to the contrary--i.e. what could prove that The Master
does *not* have two hearts now? Are Traken bodies automatically human? I'm
hoping the team of carefully picked anoraks can answer/debate this
question...;)

Traken bodies are not human - they're humanoid. The only humans in the
universe come from planet Earth. If there is life on any other planet, it's
unlikely they would have followed the same evolutionary path as life on this
planet. So any alien life out there is not even going to be humanoid. But
seeing as we've never made contact with life on any other planet, there's no
way we could second guess it. And TV sci fi shows are at an immediate
disadvantage as every actor is human!

Which is all besides the point... One question about the Master though - is
his Trakenite body still 100% Traken, or is there some Time Lord mixed up in
it?

IIRC Nyssa only approached the Doctor's physiognomy with factual, clinical
professionalism, for lack of better term. She didn't seem surprised at all
when monitoring him in Castrovalva or any other times she was called upon to do
so.

As for the Master, why ignore Mark of the Rani for evidence? But if you do
insist, it is possible that the Master could certainly have two hearts even
after assuming Tremas's form. Presumably the 'fish-Master', as my friend calls
him, simply absorbed the life energy of Tremas and his physical appearance to
rejuvenate his own failing body, so the inner workings would probably work the
same, given the tremendous power boost from contact with the Source.

At least, that's my take on it. :) I could be way off. But that's how I
viewed it; the Source's energy revitalised the Master, while taking on Tremas's
youthful form further energized him and enabled him to take a somewhat more
capable and fresh form.

Having just endured the Dominators, ISTR that mention was made of the
natives of that planet had two hearts....or maybe it was noted that
Jamie had "only one heart".

not sure if that was much help...

I believe it's actually a remark by the Rani that indicates that the Master has
two hearts which are functioning normally.

Because the Master has an obsession with anagrams (in English of course) of
"the Master". Or names in other Earth languages that also mean "the Master".

Don't forget Sir Gilles Estram...

Not to mention Neil Toynay, James Stoker, and Leon Ny Taiy as "additional"
actors who played Ainley's master. :)

That was clever of the Beeb... I wish shows like Stargate would do things
like that as not to give away characters.

Earthshock part one shows that Trakens (or Nyssa at least) only have one
heart. When the team running the lifeform scanner up on the surface pick
up the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan, they note that one, and only one, of the
life-forms has two hearts - and that must be the Doctor...

Well, Earthshock part one also doesn't seem to be able to get its story
right. The commander clearly states that the scanner only picks up signs
from alien lifeforms, and yet it picks up the Doctor, Nyssa, AND *TEGAN*!
That doesn't even begin to get into the real problems with the scanner, such
as the fact that it seems to have a bleep just for two hearts (why would it
have such a feature if, as the operator seemed so surprised, it was so
rare?), and then later seems to pick up the life signals of EVERYONE in the
caverns!

I don't think the scanner is really unimpeachable (Glitz: 'Beyond reproach
or question.' Mel: I -know- what unimpeachable means!) as evidence...best
if it's just discarded, unless I missed something on my several viewings of
that particular serial. :)

You think the scanner has problems. Shall we get into the Cyberscope
continuity discussion? ;-)

*LOL*!!! Well, that's true...it is a pretty exceptional piece of equipment.

Shrug. Revenge of the Cybermen happens before Earthshock. Problem
solved.

Well, it's not quite so simple as that...it's repeatedly alluded to that the
Cybermen in Revenge are the last of their kind, whilst the ones in
Earthshock aren't. The ones in Attack did have some rudimentary knowledge
of time travel, but the ones in Earthshock didn't. So that makes it a
somewhat complicated issue.

Still, it's not entirely certain when the stories in question happened.
It's sensible that Revenge may have occurred in a time before Earthshock,
although it's questionable why the three stories that are viewed on the
scope are The Tenth Planet, The Wheel in Space, and Revenge of the
Cybermen...

But you're right. We could be overanalysing it. :) But that doesn't change
that there was a definite problem with that damned scanner. ;)

Not to mention the fact "Revenge" takes place centuries after a cyberwar
(not having happened yet in Earthshock, set in 2526, just about 40 years
after the Cybertombs were opened (DavisonDoc refers to the tombs too) but
maybe just about to happen) and set aboard a new beacon built in the 29th
century (YomDoc's dialogue about Nerva's age)!!

So: Earthshock = 2526 AD
Revenge = 2900AD appprox.

Of course it is all explained by Attack giving tyhe cybes time travel - that
also explains why the 1988 Cyberfleet in Nemesis had the most advanced
design!

First off, there was no other way to *be* knighted than in the King's
presence, obviously since he does the knighting!

Not only feasible, but likely and indeed common. And remember, the Doctor
is thought to come from Aquitaine - we see him knighted.

Let's just have them fix it on the DVD release. Replace the Revenge
scene with one from Nemesis and everybody's happy.

Eeagh! But the cybermen from Nemesis are clearly leftovers from
'Attack', and therefore frm the *future* of those in Earthshock!

By 'clearly' you undoubtedly mean some definition of 'clearly' that
neither I nor Lance Parkin are aware of.

This is, of course, assuming I am not mis-remembering something Lance
wrote in History of the Universe, in which case, please mentally
excise his name from the previous witticism.
