After having watched the "Krotons" recently, I have come to the amazing
revellation that Philip Madoc ("Krotons","War Games","Brain of Morbius",
"Power of Kroll") IS the William Shatner of british television. Just
listen to how he delivers some of his lines - and the very dramatic pauses
that he intersperses.

Think about it.

Nah, you're thinking of Paul Darrow in "Timelash", surely!

Now *that's* ham with a silly wig!

Last I saw of Madoc was 1992, when he got into stage acting in London.

Oh, he most definitely is. Take one of my favorite lines from
"Morbius", which Gina used as her personal name not long ago ...

"The brain of Morbius ... on ... the floor!"

Egad, Philip Madoc sucks. And, of course, he got consistently better.
"The Krotons" was one hell of a bad story, and Madoc is right at the
heart of it!

Excuse me? This is the man who played the War Lord in "The War Games"
-- part of the best ensemble of villains the show has ever assembled
in one story.

Think about it... for several episodes you've got the War Chief, the
Security Chief, and the War Lord all playing off of each other. You
start out with Edward Brayshaw (the War Chief) doing his Master
impersonation, then James Bree comes in as his antagonist (and he
makes the Security Chief such a wonderfully anal-retentive-sounding
fascist git). You've got the two of them at loggerheads for a
few episodes, building up their power struggles into what looks like
it'll be a confrontation of titanic proportions...

...and then the War Lord enters the scene, and instantly makes the two
of them look like squabbling children.

Madoc's War Lord is efficient, ruthless, and above all _quiet_ -- no
histrionics, no posturing. He just gets the job done while his
underlings backbite and compete for the limelight. I was blown away
by the fact that he seemed so relaxed -- none of the barely-restrained
tension of a Morgus, or the ranting of your average megalomaniac.
He's just calm and in control.

Shatner this guy ain't.

Regards,
Jon Blum
(who didn't think he was too OTT in "Power of Kroll", either)

Granted, Shatner is a ham. Granted, he's got the pure kinetic
energy of a thousand hyperactive rabbits. Granted, there have
been many times when he's overdone it.
But since everyone's picking on him, I'll play devil's
advocate. The fact is, the man has done some nice work. If you've
ever seen him in the original Twilight Zone, you'll appreciate this.
He was really good as the paranoid airplane passenger in the episode
that was remade in the movie with John Lithgow, and he was even
better in an episode where he became obsessed with a fortune-telling
machine in a small-town diner.
In fact, I'll even go so far as to say he turned in some quite
outstanding performances in Star Trek. I will not ever, ever, EVER
apologize for the respect I have for his talent whenever I watch
Spock's death and funeral in "Wrath of Khan".
Of course, I'm not saying he might not be an ass in real life.
Just that he's lots of fun to watch, and not just for camp value.
I admit, though, that he's not one of that group of brilliantly
subtle actors which includes people like Tom Baker.

Oh I agree whole-heartedly Jon, I was blown away by how good the War Lord
was. "Wow, finally someone who brings some subtlety into the bad guys'
camp." It was perhaps the most interesting performance in Troughton's
too-diminished extant canon. (mind you I hear good things about Kevin
Stoney in "The Invasion")

Plus, didn't he look great in that beard ;-)

I know, I've covered this ground before ... but I just simply
can't explain how the man's other three performances were so ...
Shatner-esque ...

>Shatner this guy ain't.

My new nomination, actually, is Inigo Jackson, Zentos from
"The Ark" ... wowsers!

Yeah I agree "Krotons" was really bad, and the "War Games" was an amazing example of padding !!

I thought Philip Madoc was good in "Morbius", but for pure genius watch the Dad's Army episode the BBC are showing this week !!!

Yes , I agree .No arguments there !

the war games IMHO was a classic and a fitting swansong for troughton
don't forget it also introduced the fact that the doctor was a timelord
for the first time.
