Hmmm, well, I agree with solarfox. You don't have to be a perve like
me to notice the infamous Jo Grant knicker shots. As Katy Manning once
said, 'Most improper for children's viewing time.' Or was it?

Linda Thorson often talks about what a disaster it was when she showed
her knickers in THE AVENGERS - day-long meetings, hauled over the coals,
etc. And just look at WARRIORS OF THE DEEP, where they must have taken
a lot of trouble to avoid similar revelations from Ms Fielding - every
time there's a promising moment, like Tegan going into the ventilation
shaft, the camera cuts away. (But there is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it
shot in the background of a scene in part 2.)

If it was so indecent, they could easily have avoided showing Jo's undies.
Why not reshoot the scenes? Or why not give her less conspicuous panties?
Why put her in a miniskirt at all? Linda Thorson's AVENGERS appearances
were in the Sixties, when it would have been untrendy to wear anything
else, but they could easily have dressed Jo in hot pants, which were more
trendy, just as leggy, and wouldn't show her knickers. They didn't. Why
not? Because Jo's underwear wasn't indecent at all, but a legitimate
bonus for Pertwee era viewers, I say.

Oh dear, time on my hands again.

Stephen :)

Well, my own darling other half says that when a woman chooses to wear
a mini-skirt, she should choose her underwear as if it was outer-wear
and should consider it as being potentially viewable by others! I think
this was why women's underwear in the early seventies was almost anything
but plain white: yellow, red, polka dots etc etc! I think a glimpse of
knickers has actually become *more* naughty these days than it was
considered at the time.

I remember at least two episodes where the companion was smacked
on the bottom by the Doctor. I think Joe Grant was one
and Sara Jane the other. Any one else remember this?

I don't remember them specifically, but I'm not surprised. I can't
recall any other companion-spanking, but I'm pretty sure the Doctor
smacks Tika on the bottom to get her attention in "The Horns of Nimon."

I don't. I do recall one line, though. Hartnell to Ford: "What you need is a
jolly good smacked bottom!" Or something along those lines.
