I went to see the movie Moulin Rouge today and almost jumped out of my seat
when I saw this.
One of the Bohemians, Satie, is shown many times throughout the movie
wearing Tom Baker's "first" scarf. I'm thinking, hmm, maybe it's just a
coincidence. But then, in one brief scene, Satie is wearing Tom's second
(Red) scarf.
They often call Tom the "Bohemian Doctor" so I guess it fits.
Of course no one I was with knew what I was talking about. :(

James Acheson based Tom's costume design on a Lautrec poster for the Moulin
Rouge, you know :)

Pretty famous painting too. Prints for it are pretty common...

famous image maybe, it was never a painting.

Anyone have a link? I *think* I know what picture it is, but I want to be
absolutely sure:). And oh yes, I can't be arsed to surf for it, I'm nodding
off...*yawwwwwwwnnnnnn*

At the Doctor Who exhibition in Blackpool, years ago, they used to sell a
print of the original Toulouse Lautrec poster with Tom's face painted on
it... unless my memory's playing tricks on me again.
Maybe this one? http://www.sandiegomuseum.org/lautrec/AristCfs.html
(He did several posters for Aristide Bruant -- none of them specifically
for the Moulin Rouge, I think.

In 'The Death of Art' we're told that the Fourth Doctor was the
actuaal inspiration behind Toulouse-Lautrec's 'Aristide Bruant dans
son cabaret' during a trip to France in the nineteenth century.
So that means the Fourth Doctor inspired the illustration which, in
the 1970s, inspired the costume designer on the BBC's television
series 'Professor X' to come up with the outfit for the fictional
title character (who was, at the time, played by an actor called Tom).
That make any sense?

Close, but that's not the actual one. I think it's shown in "The
Seventies", but may be wrong.

Woohoo! I've made Cameron's head explode *twice* in one month! I've
just *gotta* go for the hat-trick... ;)

What about these (which are mirror images of one another)?

I think it'd have to be one of a subject with a *multicolored* scarf, since
that's what both the 4th Doc and the guy in MOULIN ROUGE have.
Hmm, can't wait to see the movie, darnit;). Pretty much possible, corseted
absinthe-drunk pale tarts, yeah, that's the thing;)

Ah, but it was the lady who did the knitting of the scarf that was
responsible for it being multi-coloured, since she used every colour she
had, which made it very long as well... and the rest is history!
Can anyone confirm for me (I haven't gone to see Moulin Rouge yet, though I
intend to) whether the character "Satie" is supposed to be the French
impressionist composer Erik Satie? If this is the case, I'd imagine that it
would have been better for him to be dressed up as JonDoc - Satie had a
collection of a dozen identical velvet suits ;-)>

What sort of role would a forty year old, hairy, male truck driver have in

Hmm, I recall from years back a poster which was quite similar in appearance
though it was obviously Tom right down to a Sonic Screwdriver in the coat
pocket. I've always wanted a copy of that poster! I foolishly didn't
appreciate it at the time and sadly purchased a "Watch Out, America, Who Is
Here" poster featuring Peter Davison instead.
I believe Spirit of Light used to have them for sale (both of 'em).
