(The "Disney's Ducktales" questions)
1. Megabyte's serial number was "the sixth root of 716 to the sixth
power" so the solution (and the answer) was 716.
2. The title of the 2-hour movie was "Super Ducktales".
3. The network showing the original Fenton/Gizmoduck introduction was NBC.
(The "Gummi Bears" questions)
4. The three Gummi Bears shown during the opening theme song to the Disney
Afternoon (both long and short versions) are Cubbi, Sunni, and Tummi.
5. Michael Rye is the voice behind both King Gregor and Duke Igthorn.
(The "Rescue Rangers" questions)
6. There is only one episode in this whole series with a one-word title.
(it just happens to be "Robocat")
7. In "Pie in the Sky" the Rangers are trying to help Midge migrate to
Capistrano.
(The "Tale Spin" questions)
8. Consider Covington the con-artist capturing Becky's heart in "Molly
Coddled."
9. Klopstokia's leader was President Myron, friend to Whistlestop Jackson.
(the other questions)
10. The only other two F.O.W.L. agents besides Chief Agent Steelbeak
explicitly mentioned in the Darkwing Duck episodes so far are Major
Synapse and Ammonia Pine.
11. "It's unbear- (it's unbear-)able fun! (dee-doo-bee)
Time to Disney bear it; we want you to share it..."
The above two lines are taken from the lyrics to the 1989 ABC Saturday
morning one-hour series: "The Gummi Bears/Winnie-the-Pooh Hour".
12. The ultra-super-bonus question!
Here is the Disney Channel order:
1.) "That Sinking Feeling" 8.) "Trading Faces"
2.) "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlatan" 9.) "Battle of the Brainteasers"
3.) "Dirty Money" 10.) "Night of the Living Spud"
4.) "Beauty and the Beet" 11.) "Getting Antsy"
5.) "Apes of Wrath" 12.) "Aduckyphobia"
6.) "Can't Bayou Love" 13.) "Negaduck"
7.) "You Sweat Your Life"

I'm still taking answers to my *easy* trivia questions, but at a different
address: an...@uhunix.uhcc.hawaii.edu . For those of you who missed that,
here they are again, with a new one:
1. The Disney Afternoon is no longer at Disneyland, but when it was, two
DA characters narrated part of the Disneyland Railroad ride (from the
first stop -- Frontierland, I believe -- to Afternoon Avenue). Name
the two characters and the actors who did their voice characterizations.
(Hint: The two characters are from one of the more recent DA shows).
2. Who's the *only* female DA character pictured on the Disney Afternoon
Songbook as well as on the cover of the Disney Afternoon tape/CD and who
is her voice characterization? (Hint: The character is from one of the
older DA shows. Also, none of DW's songs are in the DA songbook.)
3. Who sings the lead vocal (& backgrounds) in the theme songs to DuckTales
and Rescue Rangers? The same guy sings the lead vocals to the Disney
Afternoon theme song.
Please do NOT post your answers, otherwise you might spoil the fun
for everyone else that wants to guess.

JDS> A) ROGER RABBIT SYNDROME: Toons can't die.
B) INDIANA JONES SYNDROME: Despite impossible odds, the hero always
cheats death through some lucky break.
C) KILL MOOSE AND SQUIRREL SYNDROME: Any attempt by villains to do away
with the hero will in some way or another backfire.
D) WE NEED MONEY SYNDROME: "Don't kill the villain! We need him!"
How about a few more:
E) THE HARRY HOUDINI SYNDROME: Even though the villain is taken into custody
by the police, he still manages to escape. This also works with the hero
of the story. Sort of a rehash of (B), perhaps.
F) THE MAXWELL SMART SYNDROME: Either the hero makes a VERY narrow escape
("missed it by *that* much") or the gadgets/devices the hero uses backfires
on him/her. This one comes in virtually all of the current DA shows.
G) THE SOAP OPERA -- TUNE IN TOMORROW SYNDROME: Our hero's on the verge of
death or has suffered a very big defeat (i.e. Tale Spin -- "A Bad
Reflection On You, Part I" or Darkwing Duck -- "Just Us Justice Ducks,
Part I"). The best time to cut the episode and say "to be continued..."
H) THE DALLAS SYNDROME: It's all a dream, nothing more, nothing less. The
best example: DW, "Dead Duck." However, like I said earlier, DW still
gives some great lines after he wakes up. (Actually, DW seemed to
actually disprove (A) in "Dead Duck" until (H) happened.)

VGR> Didn't the Oprah in DuckTales have a different name than the one shown
VGR> today (I can remember neither name)?
The talk show host from DT's "A Case of Mistaken Secret Identity" was
in fact, Oprah. Oprah Webfeet, that is.
In DW's "Dead Duck" her name is Opal Windbag.
I think it would have been much funnier if it was Oprah D. Windbag. :-]

Subject: New episodes?
Reply-To: dana_ueha...@uhplato.bitnet (Dana Uehara)
Add this to the FAQ file... Does anyone know if and/or when any new episodes
of "DuckTales," "Rescue Rangers," "Tale Spin" and "Gummi Bears" are going to
be produced?
Actually I probably wouldn't expect any new episodes for GB, DT or RR since
GB is no longer on the Disney Afternoon and supposedly, either DT or RR
will be bumped to make way for Goof Troop (which [I think] premieres on the DA
this fall). Next fall Bonkers D. Bobcat is supposed to premiere, which will
probably bump either TaleSpin or the series that wasn't bumped by Goof Troop.
"Goof Troop" premieres on the Disney Channel on April 20 (saw the previews
for that show, and it looks interesting.) I don't really like the theme song
that much, though (since it sounds like the same person's singing the GT theme
as the DT / RR theme).

Subject: DA cels followup
The following appears as an informative message only and should not be
construed as a commercial announcement of any sort.
A phone call last Thursday to Animated Art Gallery (800
366-2357 / 216 621-0330 / fax 216 621-0259) confirmed that they indeed
did have some cels for the Disney Afternoon shows. They have sold
several RR cels and currently have a couple on hand. I spoke with
Brenda Schaffer who was kind enough to send me a catalog which I
received earlier today. She mentioned that there are a number of DA
cels available through them (from Disney, I assume) and the selection
varies with time. Cels from TS are now starting to become available,
although there was no mention of DWD cels as of yet.
The colorful catalog is some twenty pages long with about two
thirds covering Disney animation, mostly from feature length films.
As can be expected, some of these are fairly steeply priced. There
are five cels from GB in the catalog in the US$155-175 range.
Ms. Schaffer also sent me a photostat of each of the two RR
cels. For some reason (my enthusiam over the phone, perhaps?) these
are somewhat more expensive than the GB cels and have a price of
US$395 each. One is a very nice one of C/D/Z and the other has C/G/D,
but G is somewhat obscured and D has his eyes closed. I think that I
may pass on these, so now you folks have the details if you're interested.
Ms. Schaffer said that collectors who are not overly hurried may
specifically order cels with particular characters. I think I'll do
this tomorrow after reviewing the credit limit on my gold card.

Subject: Disappearing Dale and the boomerang helmet
In yesterday's RR episode "Throw Mummy from the Train", I
noticed a couple of minor problems.
First, in the sequence some five minutes into the show where
Hiram explains his situation to our heros, Dale (small and in the
center), completely disappears for about three frames! This is a bit
like Gadget popping out for about five or six frames early in the
episode "Adventures in Squirrelsitting". I guess someone dropped the
"Dale" cel and didn't notice it until the photography had already been
completed.
The second minor discontinuity occurs when Hiram is ejected
from the train. Wexler frisbees his pith helmet with sufficient force
to throw mummy from the train sending Hiram, the gang, and the helemt
hrough a window. In the immediately following scence, the helmet
agically reappears on Wexler's head.
This episode is also notable in that it is the one with the
longest interval between the start of the show and when the gang makes
its first appearence. I also note the moral ambiguity that makes
Wexler's theft of an ancient trinket unacceptable while passing over
Dale's souvenier trinket snarfage.
Probably the longest running discontinuity item in the series
is the presence and coloring of Gadget's camisole. (Actually, I guess
that she would call it a T-shirt.) Sometimes the neckline is there, and
sometimes it's not. If it's there, sometimes the camisole is colored,
sometimes not. If colored, sometimes it's white, and sometimes it's blue.
I mention this only to encourage the ink and paint crew to observe the
model sheets and color key; there are viewers who notice the extra effort.

Subject: Gummi Bears clip list
Reply-To: dana_ueha...@uhplato.bitnet (Dana Uehara)
I think I have most of the intro clips to the Gummi Bears show (Disney
Channel version) identified. Corrections, additions &/or suggestions welcome.
1. Overlay (show title) on Dunwyn castle, riders come out -- (?)
2. Gruffi dodging dragon fire -- The Magnificent Seven Gummies
3. Sunni bouncing away from ogres -- (?)
4. Gusto and Gruffi -- Dress For Success
5. Tummi crashing through door at high speed -- Faster Than A Speeding Tummi
6. Cubbi and Kevin escaping trolls -- Up, Up and Away
7. Gummies crossing a log; Gruffi falls -- (?)
8. Gummies falling into cavern -- (?)
9. Gummies bouncing in front of ogres -- Up, Up and Away
10. Grammy and Cubbi bouncing away -- For A Few Sovereigns More
11. Kevin jumping on stump, catapulting into air -- Up, Up and Away
12. Cubbi bowling ogre over -- Up, Up and Away
13. Gummies in Quick-Tunnel -- Faster Than A Speeding Tummi
(This one might actually be debatable.)
14. Kevin hitting ogre on head with a large drumstick -- (?)
15. Kevin and Calla swinging on rope -- (?)
16. Zummi opening Great Book -- A New Beginning
17. Grammy drinking gummiberry juice -- The Secret of the Juice
18. Igthorn holding Toadie out window -- Dress For Success
19. Toadie falling from ship -- Up, Up and Away
20. Gruffi yanked off his feet by rope -- A Gummi In A Gilded Cage
21. Carpie hitting bottom of bird cage -- A Gummi In A Gilded Cage

I assume the final scenes were made just for the opening credits. However,
I know I could be wrong, so I'm open to any suggestions/corrections.

You finish before I get a word in:
>I think I have most of the intro clips to the Gummi Bears show (Disney
>Channel version) identified. Corrections, additions &/or suggestions welcome.
And I was so close...
>1. Overlay (show title) on Dunwyn castle, riders come out -- (?)
I believe that this is from "Over the River and Through the Trolls".
Of course I'm liable to be as wrong as you or anyone else, for that matter.
>3. Sunni bouncing away from ogres -- (?)
Now here's a little tidbit (trivia?) on this clip: in "A New Beginning" the
scene had a horizon for a background instead of trees, and Tummi was the
bear who bounced out of the way of the same two ogres. Recycled animation?
>7. Gummies crossing a log; Gruffi falls -- (?)
>8. Gummies falling into cavern -- (?)
As far back as I can remember I've never actually seen these two clips used
in a Gummi Bears episode. In fact, it seems very clear in my mind that #7
and #8 were even in the original 1985 GB theme song.
>14. Kevin hitting ogre on head with a large drumstick -- (?)
This is from "A New Beginning". BTW, I've always spelled his name Cavin,
because that's what's I keep hearing when his name is pronounced. And we
know how much you have to spell names the same way you pronounce them...
>15. Kevin and Calla swinging on rope -- (?)
Original clip, as far as I know.
>16. Zummi opening Great Book -- A New Beginning
I don't think this is correct. The clip shows Cavin is there, but in the
episode (I think) he isn't.
>17. Grammy drinking gummiberry juice -- The Secret of the Juice
I don't think so. I never saw Grammi tasting the juice during the episode.
>22. Carpies flying -- Queen of the Carpies
Eeeps! No, this is also from "A Gummi in a Guilded Cage". The carpies are
in hot pursuit of the bears as they escape on their glider.
>I assume the final scenes were made just for the opening credits.
Hafta agree with you here. Too contrived to actually be in an episode.

The following is not a commercial advertisement. It is provided for

The latest issues of the surviving titles of Disney Comics now
have a new offer for back issues for the year and a half period in
which Disney Afternoon titles were published. The latest
advertisement from Gladstone / Another Rainbow offers all of the back
issues for only US$1.50 each with a minimum order of US$10. Previous
prices were in the three to four dollar range, so this is quite a
savings. See the advertisement for details.

Subject: DA Einstein appearance
Someone already got it right. The Einstein reference occurs in
the opening sequence of the RR episode "It's a Bird, It's Insane, It's
Dale!" where the astronomers are talking about the meteor shower. The
short astronomer who speaks last is an obvious characture of Einstein
(German accent, hair color, hair style, etc.).
And another thing ...
On the RR episode "A Lean on the Property", I noticed that
Monterey's magically appearing crescent wrench can open fire hydrant
caps by turning them in the wrong direction. Was this done on
purpose? Do hydrants in the Far East work in opposite direction
compared to those in the West?

It seems that they just have a "mad scientist" prototype that they use
when they need a mad scientist character. That description also fits
(roughly) characters from "A Fly in the Ointment," "Pre-hysterical Pet,"
and "Double 'O Chipmunk."

Subject: Redone Gadget Scene?
"Fake Me to Your Leader" impressed me with some of the interesting
ideas and decent background art (I am pretty sure I saw an early 60s Chrysler
in the junkyard). But I saw something I thought was changed.
When the RR are locked in the glove box of the school bus and trying to
figure a way out--I could've sworn the animation was different!
As I recall, Gadget turned her back to the lock, bent over slightly,
and opened the lock with her tail! Oh man, the look on her face! (now THAT
would make an interesting .gif). But in later versions, she merely stuck her
arm in the lock mechanism and undid it.
[Mind you, my memory could be shot and the opening-with-tail scene
could be in another episode].
Spreaking of Gadget, Tad Stones mentioned in his Dec 1989 interview that
she was based on the character Jordan from the movie "Real Genius" (played by
actress Michelle Meyrink).
