I've always been curious about this. I know the film was a
bitch to work on, hence many animators dislike for the final
product, but I've always adored this movie. First time we
had a Prince with a real personality, or at least an attempt
at one (Don't get me wrong, I love the earlier features,
but Disney Princes have always gotten short shrift compared
to the heroines), I found the style and backgrounds insipired
by the Unicorn tapistries wonderful, and interesting, and
I will never understand why "angular" animation gets the
thruough trouncing it does here on the net (just noticing
general comments about the upcoming Pocohontas release
on r.a.animation, and by my own sister) simply because it
is a different style than the bulk of Disney's features.

Anyway, I'm just curious. Certainly Malificent was an
utterly delightful and frightening villian, the angular
style fitting her perfectly in my opinion, and Rose
was well rounded as far as Disney princesses go, certainly
a forerunner of Ariel when it came to personality and
willfulness. I even enjoyed the faeries, while most often
those kinds of characters make me wince.

I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers here, or put down
people who don't like the style of SB, but I have alwasy wondered.

Of course Aurora wouldn't like that so we'll have to settle for phone

More like the first prince with something else to do than kiss
the girl at the end.

The angular look just didn't capture the public. That was 1959,
we'll see if anything has changed.

Basically, people didn't like Sleeping Beauty because it looked
different than anything else Disney had done. The Gothic style
just didn't appeal to the general public.
The movie had a great villain, a more active prince, three entertaining
fairies and most beautiful princess ever to grace the animated screen.
It should be Walt's Masterpiece, not that Fantasia thing.

Don't worry. Some of us old timers liked Sleeping Beauty when it came out and
still love it today. :)

Here! Here! I agree. Sleeping Beauty is one of my all time favorites. Too bad
I can't seem to get my hands on a video that I can afford.

Thank you! It's so nice to find another Sleeping Beauty fan out
there.

Phillip was a riot! "No CARROTS!" and the voice!

Howdy ...

Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but even though _Sleeping
Beauty_ flopped in 1959, didn't it eventually catch on with the
moviegoing public in rerelease?

It isn't as popular as other Disney features, but _Sleeping
Beauty_ isn't exactly a lost work in the canon.

The real question for me is: will this angular animation style
be an aesthetic success with earth tones and computer-assisted
backgrounds?

Thanx,

Hey!!
I missed this whole post (being on break and all), so I don't know what was
originally said. BUT! I LOVE _Sleeping_Beauty_!!! I've always loved it!
THat's why I am the FDC Malificent! I think it has a wonderful story line,
and the characters are pretty awesome, too! My favorites are Malificent
(obviously! ;)), Diablo, and the minstral during the Scawmps sequence!

I think that it's pretty wonderful even with the funny/angular/abstract/
whatever scenery. I like it much better than... (Malificent conjures water-
proofing spell to protect her from any over-zealous water warriors) Snow
White. I mean... she lived with 7 men, and the world was okay with this?!?!
But seriously, I don't care for Snow (the fluffy white stuff that falls
from the sky, either). I like the witch and Dopey and the mirror. That's
just my $.02! But, I still *love* _Sleeping_Beauty_, and that's it.
BYES!!!

IMHO, although the art isn't the best, SB is one of the best *animated*
features around. The scene where Philip is riding his horse through the
woods- the movements of the horse are incredible. And when Aurora and
Philip walk down the stairs together is very well done. Philip was also
the handsomest, best designed and characterized of Disney's princes
to date, along with Aladdin, I think. Not incidentally, they are both
the most physically active in the movies, to the best of my knowledge.
