Our daughter Maddie (4.5 yrs) can be very difficult to awaken in the morning.
She is, in addition, a big Lion King fan.
She loves to stand on the coffee table and hold a stuffed
animal over her head when we play the song 'The Circle of Life'
from the soundtrack.

We usually play some music in the mornings, typically Raffi
or something to kind of get things started.

One morning, as I was trying to get Maddie up ( and Kate was thinking
that the only thing greater than the strong force
was the force that held Maddie in bed), the opening notes of
'The Circle of Life' started up.

Maddie almost literally jumped out of bed, and ran from the room,
then ran back to grab a Simba doll.
She dashed into the living room, and only partly awake, stood on
the table, holding Simba over her head.

While this still works to help get her up in the morning, we are getting
a little tired of the music.

Also, around our house, the opening word ( or sound or whatever)
on the soundtrack is translated as 'Ahhhhh, don't eat me'.

I may try the soundtrack on our 4.5 yr old daughter one of these mornings.
It sounds like a great idea. BTW, Susie likes to have me hold her 6 month old sister
over my head during 'The Circle of Life'...

I'm not the one you asked, but Mufasa's death did bother her a bit, but it has
given us a chance to sit and talk about death with her. It has been a valuable
experience in my opinion. While we had tried to explain death to her in the past
(when a grandmother died) she did not understand us at all. Now she
seems to be able to understand the concept *somewhat* and talk about it
with insightful questions.
She brings it up again every now and then, but now seems more
curiosity than worry when she does.
When I had to travel on business recently she did ask her
mom if dad was still alive...

My wife made the observation that it never bothered Susie when she watched
the villians die at the end of Disney movies (e.g. Gaston in B&B, Ursula in TLM,
Jafar in RoJ, the Queen in Snow White...etc.). These scenes never generated
questions. It took the death of a character she cared about to get her brain to
process the concept.

No other parts of The Lion King seemed to bother her unless you count the
fact that she was not pleased that they didn't tell us the name of the
cub Simba and Nala had at the end of the movie. She insists it's Simba Jr.
My wife thinks they called it Mufasa. Anyone know if there is an official
answer? (Yes, she still brings it up every now and then.)

Her favorite character is Nala, but she loves all the 'good guys'.

I like to play Disney feature music (i.e., TLM, BatB, Aladdin soundtracks)
to help lull me to sleep. Not because they're boring, but because they're
pleasant and help me to relax. Often, I'll be listening to the same thing
when I wake up, if I set the player to infinite repeat. At any rate,
waking up to a plush Beast doll is always heartwarming. :-)

That's funny....
We bought the Lion King soundtrack before our vacation and ALL of the kids (6
of 'em, ages 2 to 12) wanted us to play the tape OVER AND OVER AND OVER again!
(We drove a total of about 20 hours total, and I'd say 15 of those hours were
listening to the Read-Along Tape and the Soundtrack... and we're STILL not
tired of it!) Every kid in the car was holding up SOMETHING everytime during
"The Circle of Life", pillows, stuffed animals, books... anything!

The kids did NOT like the Elton John versions of the songs ("Yuck Dad!
Rewind!"), nor did they like "Be Prepared" (which I enjoy) but they tolerated
it. Their favorite had to be "Can't Wait to Be King" (a quote by the 2
year-old: "Play it again!").

They all saw, and loved, the movie. None of them were affected by the death
of Mufasa... sure, the older ones cried (and they admitted it!), but it didn't
traumatize them in the least.

All in all, they ALL voted it their favorite Disney Movie, and the 2 year-old
even made us buy her "Lion King" sheets for her bed.

As far as favorite characters, they were all in agreement AGAIN (these kids
have never agreed so much in their lives!)... Young Simba!

Oh yeah... I loved the movie also!

Seeya,
Dan

My roommates and I always pronounce the opening lines of the Lion King
soundtrack as "Pennsylvania Mozambique Chihuahua."
