Hi...
I'd be willing to bet my hard drive that it was Robin Williams.

Speaking of this, sometime back someone posted an "alternative"
ending to Aladdin, with the Genie ending up being the merchant.
(I think... this is from memoery), it was posted last year, anyone still
have it who could send it to me?
Of course, I am probably completly wrong, so forgive me ;-)

gonna be missing seeing Squid and ariel together ;-( sigh...
t'wont be the same without you freak ;-)
It sounds an aweful lot like Robin to me, too. But my copy of the
soundtrack lists Bruce Adler as the vocal on "Arabian Nights."
Unfortunately, no credits are given for "Legend of the Lamp," which
is the spoken portion.

Robin Williams did the shopkeeper's voice when he spoke,
but the song was not done by Robin Williams. I don't
remember who sang, but if you have the CD lyrics, it
states who did the vocals.

"EURO-DISNEY AND THE FUTURE OF ARCHITECTURE"
In Spring 1992, the Disney corporation ("Disney Imagineering") opened
the latest of its theme parks, "Euro-Disney," in Marne-la-Vallee outside
of Paris. This event would be less noteworthy if not for the fact that at
least eight of the world's most influential practicing architects
participated in the design of its facilities. This seminar, an extension
of a faculty research project begun last spring, will use the example
of Euro-Disney to inquire into the future of architecture within
the context of American culture generally. It will serve as an introduction
to contemporary architecture, to architectural criticism, and to
recent cultural theory. Besides assign readings on architectural theory
and criticism, each student in the seminar will be assigned one major
architect: Frank Gehry, Michael Grave, Charles Gwathmey, Arata Isozaki
Aldo Rossi, Robert A. M. Stern, and Robert Venturi. She or he will spend
the quarter researching the career of that architect, up to and
including his participation in the design of Euro-Disney. PREREQUISITES:
None, but preference will be to students considering majors in Art History,
Urban Studies, and Product Design.
The speaking part of that character is Williams, the song is not. (Though
Williams sang his own Genie songs)
I was one of the people who said this. I'll re-explain it.
Originally the merchant was supposed to be revealed as the Geenie in
disguise at the end of the movie. This ending got cut but you can still
tell because the merchant still has four fingers on his hands instead of
five (just like Geenie). It was never fixed/changed.
Robin Williams did not sing the opening song "Arabian Nights" but he did
do the speaking parts. His doing the voice of the merchant supported the
surprise ending and made use of his comic talents for that segment. When
the surprise ending got chopped they kept Williams' voice for the speaking
part but use someone else to sing the song. I would think someone else
did the song so it wouldn't sound too similar to Geenie's other two songs
and therefore prematurely spoil the surprise ending.
That last part about WHY they used someone else to sing the song "Arabian
Nights" is purely speculation on my part. The info on the existance of the
alternate ending is fact and can be supported by the book "Aladdin: The
Making of an Animated Film" I believe (that's where I found out about it).

The singing is Adler. Williams does the dialog portion.
* SLMR 2.1a * Pavlov? Now that name rings a bell.
In my opinion, I would say that he has a better singing
voice than Robin Williams. After listening to "Aladdin"
countless times, I've determined that Robin Williams
can't sing - he imitates others singing. (And does a very
good job)
This is not meant to put down RW. But if you listen to
his songs on "Aladdin", he's constantly changing voices.
My favorite is his Merman-esque bits in "Prince Ali".
"Arabian Nights" needs a good singer and that's why
Adler was used. IMHO.
Anyone with me on this?
The vocal credit for the soundtrack has Bruce Adler listed for "Arabian
Nights" and "The Legend of the Lamp."
Just to throw a monkey wrench into the works (no pun intended, btw)...

Well, yes and no. If you bet that the singer was Robin Williams,
then you're out one hard drive. :) RW did the monologue of the
peddler. The singing was done by Bruce Adler.

As an interesting side note, Bruce Adler sings on the cast
recording of _Crazy For You_ (the "new" Gershwin musical)
along with Jodi Benson. She sings the part of Polly,
the female lead.
I highly recommend the _Crazy For You_ cast recording.
It's a blast!

I definitely agree. He does alright in the songs - he can carry a tune as
well as anyone, I suppose - but he's no singer. I expect they wanted
the show to open with a real song with a real singer. (A wise choice, IMO.
I really like "Arabian Nights," and don't think I would if Williams was
voicing it.)
He was also nominated for a Tony award last season (best supporting actor
in a musical, but lost (to Scott Waara from The Most Happy Fella, I think).
I also think he lost his last nomination too (don't know what that was
for). So performing in Aladdin was sort of his "consolation" prize. I
really like his song in the movie. I've listened to Crazy For You only once
or twice, and it was pretty good.

If you think Ursula looks imposing, then you've got a pretty good picture
of Pat Caroll. I saw a photo of her once, and the resemblance between her
and her character was pretty amazing.

I think that this has BEEN ANSWERED THREE OR FOUR TIMES ALREADY!!! Okay, I'm
calm now. It is Bruce ADler who sings the beginning song, Robin Williams did
the voice. If you don't believe me check the CD and "Aladdin: The Making of
an ANimated Film" (p.47). And Please, pretty please, read past posts. And
Please somebody put this on the FAQ!!1
Thanks!

Calm down ;-) I would just like to point out that it may not be the fault
of all these poor people that they are repeating the same answer...
USENET is, umm, kinda slow at the moment... all the news I get in England is
about a week old, compared to the 2 days it normaly is. This is due to
all sorts of problems ranging from uunet, to a flood of duplicate articles.
In all probability, these people have just got the initial question, and
haven't received any of the replies yet... so they think they are the
first ones...
