In response to Jan P.'s comment, Lea Salonga did win the Tony for
Miss Saigon, which leads me to wonder: if she's a good enough actress
to win a Tony (which she is), and she has a beautiful speaking voice, in
addition to her singing voice, why didn't she play Jasmine throughout
the film, and not just when she sang "A Whole New World" (my new favorite
song)? Is it because it was too expensive in addition to Robin Williams'
salary? Please get back to me- I'm dying to know.
thanx,

According to various sources, Aladdin and Jasmine didn't have
singing parts when the voice actors were cast. The voice actors are
not singers, and I guess that Disney also wanted to capitalize on Lea
Salonga's recent success. In any case, she has a *slight* accent
(which would not have posed a problem, IMHO).

What I really wonder is why Disney made that awful Bryson/Belle duet
of A Whole New World at the end of the movie. I just heard it on the
radio, and gosh, it sounds much worse than in the theater. Instead
of the wonderful feeling we get from the song as sung by Aladdin and
Jasmine, we're treated to a protracted earache as Bryson and Belle
mercilessly attempt to outscream one another. I found it hard to
believe, but Belle actually outscreamed Bryson. At least Bryson's
voice held together. But who cares? I turned it off.

I've wondered the exact same thing....I've assumed either she was too busy or
too expensive....or, some kinda stupid contractual thing... (IE, along the
lines of William's face & name not able to be used in conjunction with Aladdin
advertisements, ect.)

Not completely true... It was Jasmine who had no singing part when Linda
Larkin was cast in the role... However, they had been looking SO LONG for
a good speaking voice for "Aladdin" that it didn't matter that Scott Weinger
could not sing. Aladdin most definitely had a song (i.e. "Proud of Your
Boy"), but then it was cut. THEN, Alan Menken wrote and rewrote "You Can
Count on Me". THEN, a singing voice was cast and "YCCoM" recorded. THEN,
that song was cut. THEN, Menken and Rice wrote "One Jump Ahead" and "A
Whole New World" and a new, older singing voice was needed. THEN, Brad Kane
was finally cast around the beginning of THIS year..... Craaaaaaazy!

I agree COMPLETELY. I never understood why Disney did that, both with that
song and the hideous version of "Beauty and the Beast."

Well, actually, that's a lie. I know why they did it, so they could have a
-gak- "mainstream" song to play on radio stations (ones that cater to EZ
Listening or "lite rock" types, anyway) for additional exposure.

I just don't LIKE the idea...so I just push it off into denial. Heh.

It's sickening tho and I really wish they wouldn't do that.

I believe that originally, Jasmine was to have no singing role at all, so
only a speaking voice was cast. When it was later decided that she was to
sing in "A Whole New World", Lea Salonga was cast for the part.
