Hi! I was wondering if this is the same "ending" that I sung a few years
back. My Chorale did a Disney show, and the ending lyrics for "Arabian
Nights" are (if memory serves :)
So it goes, short and sweet,
They were wed down the street.
May their marriage be truly blessed.
Here's a kiss and hug,
Sure you don't need a rug?
I assure you the price is right.
Well, salom (sp?) worthy friends,
Come back soon, that's the end,
'Til another--Arabian Night!! (lots of caterwauling :)
I assumed that this ending cut back to the street peddler wrapping up the
tale that he started. At first, I wondered why Disney did not use this
ending, but then I realized that it would not be "consistent" with all
their other recent releases (i.e., big, or should I say small, screaming
chorus reprise of love theme--with the exception of TLK, which is not about
romance--yeah, right ;) (BTW, "screaming" is not an insult to the arranger
or the singers. It's just that I'm a soprano; I'm allowed to say stuff like
that :)
Forgive this post if it's a repeat!

Well from what I understood, the original ending was going to cut back to the
peddler, who would reveal to the audience that he is really the Genie (after
all, the peddler was Robin Williams' voice) ... Anyway, the film was already a
few thousands over budget, so they decided to scrap the ending, and add the
"Made you look" segment instead. I would have preferred the original ending,
being the huge Genie fan I am, but that's water under the bridge... :)

In the original movie it would have made perfect sense, since the peddler
was telling a story of his past.
That is incorrect. The ending was changed when test audiences started
getting out of their seats and leaving the theater at the end.
The new ending kept all the kids seated until the credits rolled.

Didn't Musker do a post last year? I think so, it should be somewhere in the
depths of my account. :) That post made my month. They like us. They really
like us!

Hey, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the voice of the peddlar was done
by Bruce Adler, not Robin Williams. It's easy to mistake the voice for
Robin's; when I first saw the movie I thought it was Robin too, but the
credits tell a different story.

And since we had already seen the peddler pour a handful of glittering
crystals out of the lamp and throw them into the sky; THAT'S MAGIC.
Genie magic.

And have you heard the incidental reprises they wrote for the very
original submitted version of Aladdin? WONDERFUL stuff!!!!!! I don't
think multi-reprises of Arabian Nights would have served the film as well,
but the bookending was a neat idea. Of course, then what would the
sequels have used? ;)

The original ending didn't survive the final editing process because test
audiences got up and left right after they saw Aladdin and Jasmine on the
carpet at the very end. Everyone assumed that what is now the end of the
movie *was* the end of the movie even then.
