After seeing Disney's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow on the Disney Channel's
Walt Disney Presents this week, I think the Beauty and the Beast animators
were inspired by parts of it. In the beginning there is a scene where
Ichabod Crane walks through the town -- he has his nose buried in a book,
reading as he goes just like Belle did. The townspeople sing to each other
about him as he goes through the town, remarking how odd he is but still
nice (just like townspeople did for Belle).

Ichabod's adversary, Handel Braum (or something like that) is very much
like
Gaston.

There are three "bimbettes" who go gaga over Ichabod much like their
counterparts did over Gaston in Beauty and the Beast.

There is a tavern scene where Handel plots to get the better of Ichabod
-- both of them are trying to woo the lovely lass in town. In the tavern
sits a gaunt near-death figure sitting in the shadows of a high-back chair
who looks and talks very much like the Insane Asylum owner in Beauty and
the Beast.

A scene in the woods around Halloween looks like the woods in B&TB where
the
wolves were. Ichabod on his horse is very similar to Belle's father on his
horse in the woods. There are also shots seen from the perspective of
riding on Ichabod's horse, much like there were shots as seen from riding
the horse of Belle's father.

We checked the listings, and sadly this film will not be rebroadcast this
month or in November.

Coming this Tuesday to video stores everywhere is Beauty and the
Beast, "The Most Beautiful *Pastiche* Story Ever Told!"

It's been so many years since I've seen The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,
but it's coming back now. You're absolutely right about the
similarities. I believe that BatB was one of Walt's first prospects
for a feature film. It is said that he couldn't quite fill out the
story enough, so he went with Snow White. It looks like he and his
crew made BatB a little before 1991 without even knowing it.

They had to do something with the sisters she had in most versions
of the story. Might as well "borrow" it from TLoSH, too!

I wonder why.... ;-)

Digressing slightly, here's how to construct Belle (visually) in 3
easy steps:

1) Get Wendy's mother (Peter Pan); lengthen her hair and color it
brown.

2) Add just a pinch of Anita (101 Dalmations) for profile.

3) Add eyes from the little girl in The Jungle Book.

When I first saw Gaston's hair, seeing B&tB in the theatres, I thought
the animators were mimicking a recent men's hairstyle (at least out in
Los Angeles) of the small ponytail. Well, in Disney's Legend of
Ichabod Crane, Brahm Bones (Ichabod's rival for Katrina) has a
ponytail, too! That's another similarity!

BTW, I was wrong that you wouldn't be able to see LoIC on the Disney
channel, at least slightly. The version I saw was in the Walt Disney
Presents format with Walt himself introducing the movie. Tonight,
Sunday, October 25th, LoIC was run again but packaged in another
format -- called The Wonderful World of Disney, with Michael Eisner
introducing both the Mr. Toad cartoon (from the parks' Mr. Toad's
Wild Ride) based on The Wind In The Willows, followed by Ichabod.
The listings refer to it as The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.
The Ichabod part seems to be the same exact version as the one on
Walt Disney Presents (nothing shortened that I could tell).

If anyone wishes to see this movie themselves and see if they can find
any other similarities that the Ichabod film as with Beauty and the
Beast, here are the other showtimes that it can be seen on the Disney
channel (all times Eastern):

10/30 Fri 8:00 PM
11/5 Thur 1:00 PM
11/10 Tue 6:00 PM
11/16 Mon 1:00 PM
11/22 Sun 4:30 PM
11/30 Mon 6:00 PM

Happy hunting, and Happy Halloween! :-)

<Comparisons of scenes of B&tB to the Legend of Sleepy Hollow deleted>

I remember in one of the Makings of B&tB about using "Legend" as
a reference for the spooky scenes in the forest (mainly with Belle's father
. The horse reminds me of the old flea bag from "Legend". Also, seeing the
last scene in the movie, What are the chances that Ms. Potts and Belle's
father getting to gether?

Disney has released The Legend of Sleepy Hollow on videocassette. I
believe it is marketed as a mini-classic.

I work at a library, and one of my duties is repackaging videocassettes
from cardboard boxes into plastic cases. I have been collecting Disney proof-
of-purchase tags. Is there anything I can do with these?
