Shopping, dining, and beaches near DL?...

Any suggestions for good places to shop and eat near DL? And we are
thinking we might take one day and spend it on a beach. Which beach is
closest? Nicest? We figured we'd spend 4 days in Disney, 1 day at
Seaworld, 1 day at the beach, and 1 day shopping. We'll have 8 full days.
Any other suggestions?

for The Hat. There is one in Brea, about 15 minutes from the
CCI. It's a local restaurant and they have wonderful pastrami
sammies and chilli cheese fries. And it's full of students and
locals.

Yeah, if you're going to San Diego anyway, how about the Wild
Animal Park or the main zoo?
Laura lives in SD and can undoubtedly give you more information
on those places.

Well, there's all of the restaurants in Downtown Disney, of course, but
then there's also the Anaheim Garden Walk, which has restaurants like
The Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang's, Bubba Gumps, California Pizza
Kitchen, etc. It's pretty close to Candy Cane Inn - not more than 10
minute walk and probably closer to 5. Places like Denny's and Millie's
(and also McDonald's and Quizno's) are also nearby.
Sorry, can't help with beaches.

It's not the Caribbean, but we drove to Huntington Beach one time from
Anaheim. Watched the surfers and had lunch at a 50's style burger and
milkshake diner out on the pier. It was a really clear day and we could
see Catalina island out in the distance.

on the end of the Huntington Beach Pier, and being out beyond the
shoreline, it manages to be a little farther from Disneyland than
anyplace else to eat.
I have found better service at "Captain Kidd's Buffet", directly across
from Disney's East tram stop at 1550 South Harbor Boulevard had better
service and plenty of mediocre food (but the last time I was there the
ribs had more meat than fat) on the generous selection from the $7.95
buffet. Or order from the menu. MiceChat forum and yelp says worst and
stay away, but I've never experienced the horror of which they review.
Perhaps they are arriving at 3:00p.m. on a Saturday, when the upstairs
dining is open, it's crowded. I tended to show up when they opened or
before closing for topping the tank inexpensively. Both of my
experiences at Ruby's were of an inattentive staff nonchalantly
schlepping the orders wrong. Ruby's view was remarkable, mundane was the
meal.
If the restaurant within Pirates of the Caribbean attraction suits your
fancy, it has been my experience that lunch has the menu I crave, and
securing a same day reservation early is a good idea, an can be done
just as you enter the park, at City Hall, on the antique telephone in
the lobby, by dialing 0 and requesting the Blue Bayou reservation desk.
And that, for my birthday, they ignored me when I tried to check in,
canceled my reservation as a no show while I was seated in the lobby,
and put my wife and I next to a gossiping group of wait staff nearest
the loudest and most annoying clanking of dinnerware and buss trolleys
an hour late. I took a picture of the small pile of crap under the
wobbling table, consisting of flatware, food chunks and smears topped by
broken saucer and cup pieces. I had to wait to leave before I could hear
what my wife was saying, and paid $60 bucks for the privilege, er...
punishment.

Well, there's always the San Diego Zoo - I think there's a great variety
of animals there, and a lot of the exhibits are "habitats" rather than
cages. They opened a huge new elephant exhibit last year, and of course
there's always the giant pandas - the newest baby just went on exhibit
yesterday. :-)
The Zoo sits in Balboa Park, which is an attraction in and of itself -
there are a bunch of museums and gardens - everything from Aerospace to
Natural History to various art museums. Something for everyone. You
could spend days just in Balboa Park if you went to all of the museums!
The San Diego Wild Animal Park is located about 30 miles away, and it's
more of an Animal Kingdom type of place - open savannas with many
different animals cohabitating. But there's also other exhibits, too,
like the gorillas and lions. The WAP is huge, and requires a lot of
walking to see it. Personally I prefer the Zoo - I think you get to see
a better variety of animals in a smaller area. It also gets VERY hot
(Africa hot!) at the WAP in the summer time.
There's also Old Town San Diego, which has buildings that date from the
original settlement there. Lots of shops and restaurants there, too.
It's pretty touristy, though.
For beaches, I like Coronado Beach, which is just west of the Hotel del
Coronado on Coronado Island - just across the bay bridge from downtown
San Diego. It's very family friendly, and quite big and beautiful. I
also like La Jolla Shores, which is further north, but also family
friendly. It's a little harder to navigate to with some city streets
to go through. La Jolla (though not La Jolla Shores) is also where the
seals have taken up residence in the Children's Pool and there's
been all kinds of legal wrangling over that - though it looks like the
seals finally won and will be allowed to stay.
The Scripps Aquarium is also not too far from La Jolla Shores, and
that's nice, too.
On a clear day a visit to Cabrillo Monument is good - great views of the
ocean, the city skyline, and Coronado Island.
And of course there's Sea World, too. I know that was something you had
already mentioned, so figured you'd already researched it a little.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Laura! That's awesome! I wish I had more
time to do everything you've recommended. Sounds like the Zoo is a good
idea and the park is a possibility. Thanks so much for taking the time to
detail all that for me!!
