Maybe it is because I am blasie about the MK. I grew up with Disneyland,
worked there a long while and now we are annual passholders, so when we go
to WDW we tend to spend more time at EPCOT, DisneyMGM, AK and the water
parks then I do the MK, which is why the Yacht & Beach Clubs are my favorite
hotels, followed by the Wilderness Lodge.

But it is not like any other high rise hotel...it's Disney's
Contemporary Resort! <g>
Seriously, like you, my personal fave deluxe resorts are the Y & B Club
Resorts. But for me, there is definitely an emotional attachment to the
Contemporary, because it, and the Poly, are the two original resorts.
Yes, the monorail sliding into the cavernous concourse has a lot to do
with that appeal. But I was also fascinated at the concept of how the
Comntemporary was constructed, with the "modular" rooms. Never mind
that it ultimately never worked as planned. Once the whole structure
settled, they couldn't remove the modules, and they had to refurbish the
rooms the "old-fashioned" way.
A few other things drew me to the Contemporary as well. As a kid, the
idea of he big video arcade was very appealing. It's blasé now,
compared to something like DisneyQuest, but it's still a pleasant
diversion. The theater showing Disney flicks was a draw as well [do
they still do that?]. I like the fact that the Water Mice are right
there too. And while Epcot is still my favorite park [even though Disney
removed two of its best attractions ever in Horizons and World of
Motion], the MK is still the heart and soul of the World, so yes, a
tower room view overlooking the park is truly wonderful to go to sleep
and wake up in the morning to.
I never had the opportunity to stay at the Contemporary as a child...my
dream didn't become a reality until nearly a decade ago. Once I did, it
was everything I imagined. Maybe not more, but the Disney magic was
definitely there. I imagine there are still many thousands of WDW-bound
vacationers who have always longed to stay at the Contemporary, but have
yet to have had the priviledge. I'm glad I have!

But that's a lot of 'other.' Those 2 things are what's so great about it.
Everytime we go, my kids ask [hoping] if we're staying there again. For me,
watching the MK fireworks on our balcony was the best.

I've got a place she would love then. Sandy Lake Towers on Carrier drive
just across the lake from Wet 'N Wild. It doesn't have the balcony but the
view is fantastic. We were on the south-east facing side and we could see
Spaceship Earth, the Contemporary, and Space Mountain from our room, plus
watch the fireworks at both MK and Epcot. Also, for $100 a night for a 2
bedroom/2bath suite, it was a heck of a deal for my family of 6.
