We just got back from WDW today....very very good trip, except for one thing.

Apparantly, the Disney characters will not be photographed with you if
you are wearing any logo clothing, such as Old Navy or Ron Jon's.
Is this new?

This doesn't make much sense. Do they expect EVERYONE to wear clothing with
NO logos or brand names? What about my shoes? Is the Nike swoosh ok? This
sounds ridiculous.

makes sense to me, but that doesn't mean it's not nazi-ish or just plain weird.

ever watch the real world on MTV? whenever the cast members were wearing a
shirt or something advertising a product they tried to blur it out.

i guess it's the same thing, but having pictures of your kids & a disney
character won't be seen by the millions of people that watch tv. weird weird
weird... reminds of the movie "the firm".... the firm wouldn't approve.. woo
hoo.. spooky.

It makes sense to me. They obviously don't want the characters
associated with brand names. Sure, they could go after someone trying
to make a profit off of it but it does seem easier to nip it in the bud
by just making a policy that they don't do such photographs. And they
do use common sense in implementing the policy, hence, your shoes,
unless
you're holding them up to your face and pointing to the swoosh, are
OK.

They are going to turn away a LOT of people with Old Navy shirts on.

Back in the late 1980's I was with some friends at a non-Disney park. This was
the time when The Simpson's were just starting to be merchandised and there was
an unbelievable amount of people wearing Simpson's T-shirts. We made a game of
this and counted the shirts we saw and it was well over 150. Last April when I
was at WDW we noticed how many Old Navy shirts were being worn and it brought
back our Simpsons T-shirt game. We started counting people with Old Navy
shirts while we were at The Magic Kingdom. We counted about 57 and we started
the game mid afternoon. I know Disney is very protective of its characters,
but I find it really hard to believe that with that large of a number of people
wearing Old Navy and other non-Disney logo shirts they would insult guests over
a vacation photograph. After all, the use of those pictures for anything but
personal use would be protected by Disney copywrite anyway. No mater what the
people being photographed wore.

But if this rumor is indeed true, I don't think it will be a long lasting rule.
I'm sure they will receive hundreds upon hundreds of complaints from parents
with crying children who couldn't have their photo with Mickey. Back in the
1980's Disneyland had a policy of inspecting purses and backpacks for food
people were bringing into the park. There were so many complaints that this
practice was stoped. I'm sure that a ban on non-Disney logo T-shirts would
last just as long.

We've gone to Disney and have had dozens of pictures taken with the
characters. My daughter is pictured with them wearing CK (Calvin Klein) in
big letters on the front of her shirt and they didn't turn her away.

I'm a former CM and I've never heard of this rule.
I have a picture of me wearing a sweatshirt with
GAP blazoned on the front taken with Goofy at
Animal Kingdom. Also pictures of friends in GAP
and Timberland logo shirts with Bug's Life
characters earlier this spring. I couldn't picture
Disney implementing this rule because it would be
an enormous guest disastifier and Disney goes out
of its way to prevent unhappy guests.

I'm a former WDW CM and I have never heard of this rule. How can the
characters "tell" you they won't be photographed with you when they
can't talk. There certainly are never enough escorts around to police
this rule. I have a picture from the opening day of Animal Kingdom
taken with Goofy, while wearing my GAP athletic sweatshirt. I also have
photographs from a trip this spring which features my friends wearing
GAP and Timberland logo t-shirts in a picture with the Bug's Life
characters. I can't believe this rule would exist because it would be
an enormous guest disastifier and guest satisfaction is Disney's
priority.

It's incredibly stupid. I'm suppose to plan my packing around non - brand
names clothes. Sorry honey, you can't take that shirt, Mickey wouldn't like
it ! I'm not a big name brand buyer but I do like Old Navy clothes and my
kids have their favorites too. I don't have the patience to pack for four
people and try to plan clothes that won't be offensive to Mickey.

I'm sorry, but it isn't a fabrication in the least.
As soon as my pictures are developed on Monday, I am scanning ALL of
them in. They will be in the trip diary on my website.

Included among them will be the picture where I am holding my boy's teddy
bear, with my hand over the "old navy" logo on the hat, and my boy not
in
the picture because Piglet (at Epcot, World Showcase, England) would NOT
have the picture taken with the "Old Navy" on the hat visible.

Boy was too upset to be in picture.
I take umbrage at the fact that you believe me to be making this up.

So it was only one character? And from that the deduction was made that it
was Disney policy? Sounds like one misguided CM rather than a policy.

I can't believe this is a rule. I don't see Disney doing something like this
that will offend way too many paying guests (having characters refuse to photo
with you wearing shirts & hats with company logos on them).

Not that I don't believe you...I just think it must have been something with
the particular CMs involved.

This I understand. Unless you're in a waterpark, I'm pretty sure the normal

Shirts are required to be worn by everyone at all times inside the theme parks
(not water parks). They don't set a minimum age, so that's why you were told
to put your son's shirt back on. I had a similar situation many years ago. My
son had played in the fountain in Epcot (on the way to World Showcase). We
hadn't put his shirt back on him, wanting to let his shorts dry out a little
bit first. A CM approached us as we were sitting outside a shop near World
Showcase and nicely told he had to be wearing a shirt. I think my son might
have been 4 or 5 yrs old at the time. I'm not criticizing Disney, though - in
my opinion they should be enforcing ALL their rules, with ALL guests.

Um, no, it doesn't really exist. The official policy is that characters can't
take pictures that would seem to be endorsing another company's product, but
that doesn't include logos just on clothing somebody is wearing. For example,
there are Coke statues, and signs advertizing various TV shows at Disney/MGM
where I work. When the characters come out, they are responsible for not
standing in front of them because it might be seen as endorsement (and if they
do, we are responsible for letting them know they have to move ^.^).

Now, if you were to, say, hand a character a sign advertizing something, they
would have to refuse it, but the official verdict (how we were trained, at
least) is that you can't refuse a picture, not sign a hat, etc. simply because
it has a company's logo on it (We can't, however, allow pictures with shirts
contain offensive language, nudity, etc. without covering the offensive
items.).

However, right now, there seems to be some inconsistancy about how things are
being carried out. Right now Disney is implimenting a new character/greeter
program (I'm one of the guinea pigs), and there seems to be some arguement
between the greeters, characters, and management on this issue. I've even
heard a story about Eeyore refusing to sign a Rugrats hat that already had 3
other signatures on it from other characters.

I'm going to a meeting this week about the greeter program, and I'll be sure
to pay attention to this issue (I've no doubt it will be brought up). BTW, an
even longer standing arguement had been one about characters signing clothing
while the person is still wearing it. They are not supposed to, but some of
them do it anyway.

This is something different than the logo policy. We can't allow pictures
with someone unless they have a shirt on. Everyone is really supposed to keep
their shirt on at all times in the park, but they seem to let that one
slide...

I was told recently that the reason for this is because the ink might leak
through the shirt and get on the person's skin. The solution is that there
has to be something between the shirt and the skin, then it's ok to sign.
That came from a character, and a veteran at that. His colleague said just
the opposite at first, until he explained it. So apparently there is a bit
of inconsistency--I'm glad you are working to straighten it out. I hope you
let the group know if anything is decided.

And by the way: where were you when I needed you? I had to do my own
leg-work here, and find out about the Old Navy thing myself. What do I pay
you for? :)

Well, to further discuss that, we were told we couldn't even stick something
under the shirt because if someone took a picture while the character or a CM
had his/her hand up someone's shirt, it would look kinda suspicious.

Hmmm. If noone else, maybe >I< should be the one to bring this up at the
